Nano-emulsions are submicron sized emulsions that are under extensive investigation as drug carriers for improving the delivery of therapeutic agents. The aim of this research is to investigate the stability of nano-emulsions containing polymers. Nano-emulsions containing high concentrations of Carbopol 941, Aristoflex AVC, Aronbis M, Permulen TR 2 and Aculyn 44 were unstable compared with macroemulsions with polymers. The size of emulsion droplet manufactured by adding polymer before emulsification were larger than that of emulsion manufactured by adding polymer after the emulsification. The stability of nano-emulsion containing a low concentration of polymer was also decreased, however the effect was lower than that in the high concentration of polymer. Under similar viscosity of polymer, the sequence of unstability was Aristoflex AVC < Carbopol 941 < Permulen TR2 < Carbopol 941 + Aculyn 44 < Aronbis M.

Researches on the oil recovery enhancement using the nanotechnology has recently been studied in the United States. The previous researches has focused mainly on the flow characteristics of nanoparticles in porous media, and the stability of the nano-emulsion itself. However, the analysis did not deal with the size effects between a nano-emulsion and the pore size which has an important role when nano-emulsion flows in the porous media. In this research, nano-based emulsion was fabricated which is able to be applied for the enhanced oil recovery techniques and its characteristics was analyzed. In addition, in order to identify the characteristics of nano-emulsions flowing through the porous media, the size effect was analysed by filtering test. According to the results, when the emulsion was fabricated, SCA(Silane Coupling Agent) or PVA(Poly Vinyl Alcohol) are added to improve the stability of emulsion. As the ratio of the decane to water increased, the viscosity of emulsion and the droplet size also increased. For the filtering test at the atmospheric conditions, the droplet did not go through the filter; only the separated water from the emulsion was able to be filtered. This phenomenon occurred because the droplet was not able to overcome the capillary pressure. At the filtering test by suction pressure, most of the emulsion was filtered over the filter size of $60{\mu}m$. However, the ratio of filtration was rapidly degraded at less than $45{\mu}m$ filters. This is caused due to deformation and destruction of the droplet by strong shear stress when passing through the pore. The results from the study on the basic characteristic of nano-emulsion and filtering test will be expected to play as the important role for the fabrication of the stable nano-emulsion or the research on the recovery of residual oil in porous media.

The self-cleaning properties of nano-zinc oxide on cotton fabrics have been investigated. The cotton fabric has been prepared by pad-dry method. The nano-zinc oxide was encapsulated in the polystyrene particle by mini-emulsion process prior used. The loading amount of zinc oxide particles into the mini-emulsion were various from 1% wt to 40%wt. The particles sizes of ZnO-encapsulated polystyrene mini-emulsion were determined using dynamic light scattering. It was showed that the particle size of the mini-emulsion was in the range of 124-205 nm. The topography and morphology of ZnO-encapsulated polystyrene which coated on cotton fabrics was observed using scanning electron microscopy. The crystal structure of ZnO-coated on cotton fabrics was explored by X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activities of zinc oxide were present through the self-cleaning properties. The presents of the zinc oxide on cotton fabrics significantly showed the improving of the self-cleaning properties under UV radiation.

IIn this study, O/W type nano-emulsions were prepared by phospholipid-nonionic surfactant mixtures and octyldodecylmyristate using the phase transition low-energy emulsification method. The nano-emulsions were formed only in the very narrow area of the concentration of mixed surfactant and oil molar ratio of around 1 : 1. The particle size of the emulsions was decreased as adding the aqueous phase into the emulsions after phase inversion point unlike the emulsions formed only with nonionic surfactant. Nano-emulsion was stable at room temperature for more than a month. Thus, the nano-emulsions containing phospholipids can be widely used as a cosmetic formulations.
In this study, the formation potential and the stability of nano-emulsions were evaluated according to the structure of various cosmetic oils in Tween 80/Span 80 system using PIC method at 80 oC LP 70, Isopar H and Pripure 3759 of hydrocarbons were both form a stable nano-emulsion, particle size distribution of about 40 nm. A linear structure of silicone oil formed an unstable emulsion, but cyclic or short chain oil formed was a stable nano-emulsion. In ester oils, the particle size of emulsions increases with increasing molecular weight of oils and a stable nano-emulsion could not be obtained in the molecular weight of about 450. The particle size of the nano-emulsion against required HLB value for calculating in consideration of the lipophilic and hydrophilic oil was smaller in the HLB of 8-10.
BACKGROUND: Bioavailability enhancement by solubilization of lipophilic drugs in nano-emulsion has been reported and it may be useful in pharmaceutical and nutraceutical products. This study was performed to compare in vivo bioavailability of nano-emulsion formulation with that of the general product as control. METHODS AND RESULTS: The pharmacokinetics assessment of Vitamin A, D and E complex of nanoemulsion formulation (LaVita), in comparison to the general product, was performed in the male rat plasma by a single oral dose at 20 mL/kg body weight (n=3/group). For nano-emulsion formulation (LaVita), $C_{max}$ of vitamin A and E in plasma were much higher and the area under the curve (AUC) of vitamin A, D and E were 14-63% higher, and the half-life of vitamin E was 2-fold longer than the general product. According to statistical analysis, each $C_{max}$ of vitamin A, D & E was significantly higher (p<0.01, 0.05 and 0.01, respectively) than that of general product. Half-life of vitamin A was significantly higher (p<0.01) and AUC of vitamin A and D were also significantly higher than the general product. CONCLUSION(s): Considering significant increment of $C_{max}$ and AUC, LaVita made of nano-emulsion could be more effective the absorption rate and extent for bioavailability of vitamin A, D & E than those of general product.

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of ethanol on the emulsion prepared by poly(oxyethylene) hydrogenated castor oils (HCOs)/oil/ethanol/water system. Emulsions were prepared using homogenizer as high-energy method. To evaluate effect of ethanol on the emulsion, physical properties such as droplet size and size distribution were determined and other components were almost fixed to analyze the effect of ethanol on the surfactant. In case of HCO-20, the droplet diameter was in micrometers and the droplet size was gradually deceased as the ethanol concentration was increased. The droplet diameter of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-30 was shown in nanometers and its mean droplet size was $128.15{\pm}1.06nm$ and the most stable at the 4.25 % of ethanol contents by the Form. 1 and $136.10{\pm}0.99nm$ at the 3.50 % of ethanol contents by the Form. 2. Similarly, the droplet diameter of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-40 and 4.50 % ethanol by the Form. 1 was $115.85{\pm}0.78nm$ and $121.15{\pm}0.35nm$ at the 3.25 % of ethanol by the Form. 2 and both size distributions were also narrow. Finally, the droplet size of nano-emulsion containing 4.00 % of HCO-60 and 2.25 % ethanol was $262.35{\pm}0.64nm$ and the most stable. The higher ethanol concentrations became the smaller size of emulsion became in the microscale emulsion but we determined nano-emulsion had a minimum size at a certain ethanol concentration. The results showed that the breakdown process of this nano-emulsion could be attributed to Ostwald ripening. This study about effect of ethanol on the emulsion showed that ethanol contents to prepare a stable emulsion could be determined as studying the effect of ethanol on the emulsion with the type of surfactants.

Emulsion is a dispersion system among liquids which are not miscible together. There are numerous cosmetic raw materials which have different physicochemical properties. Therefore, emulsion technology is very useful in cosmetics. With the development of emulsifier, several emulsification technologies have been developed. Since HLB method by Griffin in 1950's, PIT method, gel method, and D-phase methods, etc, have been developed. Recently, the application of natural emulsifier and polymeric emulsifier increases in cosmetics in order to achieve enhanced safety and biocompatibility. Besides nano-emulsion, multiple-emulsion, liquid crystal emulsion, and Pickering emulsion have been developed and applied as means of differentiating appearance and texture of products and achieving enhanced delivery of active ingredients. Meanwhile, the application studies of nano-dispersed structural system such as liposome or cubosome are on progress. Liposome is a bi- or multi-lamella layer dispersion system composed of amhiphilic molecules - phospholipids which are main components of plasma membrane. Cubosome also is a nano-sized dispersion system composed of a specific molecule like glyceryl monoloeate derived from natural products. And it has a cubic bicontinuous structure in water due to its unique molecular structure. Incorporating compounds (active materials) into such nano-particles can increase biocompatibility and delivery efficiency of target compounds. Manufacturing process and application of cosmetic emulsions and nano-particles are briefly introduced in this paper.
In this paper, we proposed an emulsification method without using an emulsifier and investigated the effects of particle size distribution in fluids on dispersion stability. Surfactant-free oil in water emulsion was prepared with 1 % (w/w) of olive oil by using high speed agitation, high pressure and ultrasonic dispersion methods. The particle size, microscopic observation, and dispersion stability of each sample were evaluated and dispersion stability according to various dispersion methods was compared. As a result, the emulsion dispersed by the ultrasonic dispersion method showed the smallest particle size and uniform distribution of $0.07{\sim} 0.3{\mu}m$ and was the most stable in a 7 days stability evaluation. In the above experiment, four olive oil emulsions having different particle sizes were prepared using ultrasonic dispersion technology that was capable of producing stable emulsions. The dispersion stability of each samples with oil droplet sizes of (A) 0.1 to $0.5{\mu}m$, (B) 0.3 to $4{\mu}m$, (C) 1 to $10.5{\mu}m$ and (D) 2 to $120{\mu}m$, was observed for 7 days, and the relationship between the stability and performance was studied. Emulsion (A) with particle size less than $0.5{\mu}m$ displayed the dispersion stability showing below 5 % change in a 7 days stability evaluation. In the case of (B), (C), and (D) that had larger particle than $0.5{\mu}m$, the changes of dispersion stability were 10 %, 13 % and 35 % respectively. From these results, it was proved that dispersion stability of emulsion with uniform particle size of $0.5{\mu}m$ or less was confirmed to be very stable.
