  • The nanostructural graphene/vanadium oxide (graphene/$V_2O_5$) composite with enhanced capacitance was synthesized by the electro-deposition in 0.5 M $VOSO_4$ solution. The morphology of composites was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The oxidation states of the electro-deposited vanadium oxide was found to be $V^{5+}$ and $V^{4+}$. The morphology of the prepared graphene/$V_2O_5$ composite exhibits a netlike nano-structure with $V_2O_5$ nanorods in about 100 nm diameter, which could lead a better contact between electrolyte an electrode. The composite with a deposition time of 4,000 s exhibits the specific capacitance of $854mF/cm^2$ at a scan rate of 20 mV/s and the capacitance retention of 53% after 1000 CV cycles.

  • Blends of poly(acrylic acid- co-maleic acid) (PAM) with poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) were pre -pared in distilled water PVA/PAM/saponite (PVA/PAM/SPT) nanocomposite films were prepared with various clay contents by using the solution intercalation method. The variations of the dispersion, morphology, and thermo-mechanical properties of the nanocomposites with clay content in the range 0 to 9 wt% were examined. Up to 3 wt% clay loading, the clay particles were homogeneously dispersed in the PVA/PAM blends. However, some agglomerated structures form in the polymer matrix above a clay content of 7 wt%. The thermal stability of the hybrids was increased linearly with increasing the clay loading up to 9 wt%. The maximum strength and modulus were obtained at a clay content of 7 wt%. Thus, the addition of small amounts of clay to the PVA/PAM blends produced PVA/PAM nano-composites with improved the thermo-mechanical properties.

  • Polyurethanes containing mesogen unit (MPU-6) were prepared from 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 4,4'-bis(6-hydroxy hexoxy)biphenyl (BP-6) having flexible chain composed of 6 carbons. Intrinsic viscosities of MPU-6s were in the range of $0.23{\sim}0.56 dL/g$. The mesomorphic behaviors of MPU-6 were observed in X-ray and polarizing microscopy analysis. However, MPU-6s demonstrated a 'virtual liquid crystal' behavior, which did not exhibit mesophase on slow heating and slow cooling. MPU-6 having lower molecular weight exhibited higher crystallization rate and melting crystallization temperature due to increased mobility of polymer chains. The increased mobility of polymer chains facilitate the orientation of mesogen units that may act as a nucleating agent.

  • A drop weight impact test was conducted in this study to analyze the mechanical and thermal properties caused by the changes in the ratio of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) to ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) laminations. The ratios of CFRP to EVA were changed from 10:0 (pure CFRP) to 9:1, 8:2, 6:4, and 5:5 by manufacturing five different types of samples, and at the same time, the mechanical/thermal properties were analyzed with thermo-graphic images. As the ratio of the CFRP lamination was increased, in which the energy absorbance is dispersed by the fibers, it was more likely for the brittle failure mode to occur. In the cases of Type 3 through Type 5, in which the role of the EVA sheet is more prominent because it absorbs the impact energy rather than dispersing it, a clear form of puncture failure mode was observed. Based on the above results, it was found that all the observation values decreased as the EVA lamination increased compared with the CFRP lamination. The EVA lamination was thus found to have a very important role in reducing the impact. However, the strain and temperature were inversely propositional.

  • The organic-inorganic composite membrane in polymer exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) have several fascinating technological advantages such as a proton conductivity, thermal stability and mechanical properties. As the inorganic filler, silicon carbide (SiC) fiber have been used in various fields due to its unique properties such as thermal stability, conductivity, and tensile strength. In this study, composite membrane was successfully fabricated by modified-silicon carbide fiber. Modified process, as a novel process in SiC, takes reaction by phosphoric acid after oxidation process (generated homogeniusly $SiO_2$ layer on SiC fiber). The mechanical property which was conducted by tensile test of the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was better than that of Aquivion casting membrane as well as ion cxchange capacity(IEC) and proton conductivity. In addition, the single cell performance was observed that the 5wt% modified-$SiO_2@SiCf$ composite membrane was approximately $0.2A/cm^2$ higher than that of a Aquivion casting electrolyte membrane and electrochemical impedance was improved with the charge transfer resistance and membrane resistance.

  • In this study, a hybrid metals such as copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) coated carbon fibers (Ni-Cu/CFs) was prepared by wet laid method to develop a randomly oriented sheet material for high-efficiency electromagnetic interference shielding with the enhanced durability. The prepared sheet materials show a high electromagnetic interference shielding efficiency of 69.4 to 93.0 dB. In addition, the hybrid metals coated Ni-Cu/CFs sheets showed very high durability with harsh chemical/thermal environments due to the effective corrosive and mechanical resistances of Ni surface. In this context, the Ni-Cu/CF sheet possesses longer service life than the Cu/CF sheet, that is, 1.7 times longer.

  • The effects of temperature and curing systems on the compression set of natural rubber (NR) at constant load were investigated. NR was compounded with various amounts of sulfur and DCP in order to obtain various crosslink densities and curing systems. Compression sets at constant load were compared with those at constant strain. Compression set at constant load was more affected by changes in crosslink density than compression set at constant strain, due to the differences of exerted strain energy density. Compression set of sulfur cured NR under constant load was increased with increasing load and temperature, but the compression set of DCP cured NR was not changed by increasing load and temperature.

  • EPDM(Ethylene-propylene-diene-terpolymer) compound reinforced with carbon black having four different particle size, acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black), and silica were manufactured by internal mix and open mill. To investigate the effect of particle size of filler and filler type on far-infrared vulcanization, intermal temperature of compound, degree of curing, infrared spectroscopy, and thermal analysis were measured. The thermal conductivity of far-infrared vulcanized EPDM compound increased with increasing particle size of carbon filler, but hot air vulcanized EPDM compound is not affected by particle size. The thermal conductivity was increased in the order of carbon black < silica < acetylene black(thermal conductivity carbon black).

  • Polyolefins are important commodity polymers with the largest volume of business owing to their outstanding combination of cost performance and excellent physical properties. However, the lack of functional groups often has limited their end uses, such as compatibilizer, modifier and adhesive, where the interaction with other materials is especially important. The incorporation of functional groups as polymer segments to afford block or graft polyolefin copolymers has been extensively investigated in the context of the functional polyolefin hybrids. Living polymerization processes have been considered to be an efficient method to prepare the polyolefin hybrids with precisely controlled architecture and compositions. Among the living polymerization techniques, controlled/"living" radical polymerization (CRP) methods are very effective not only because of the controllability of polymerization but also because of the versatility of monomers and polymerization conditions. In this review paper, progresses on the preparations of polyolefin graft or block copolymers through CRP techniques are summarized. The commodity polymers such as polyisobutylene, polyethylene and polypropylene are combined with polar segments such as polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, polystyrene to yield functionalized polyolefins.

  • Hardness of rubbery materials, which is important for dimensional stability and product performance, was investigated upon temperature change in this study. A newly developed IRHD (International Rubber Hardness Degree) tester was used to measure the hardness changes of NR and SBR specimens at various temperatures and the hardness values were compared with the Young's modulus. The harness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR showed an abrupt change near the glass transition temperatures. The hardness and Young's modulus were increased by increasing temperature due to the increased random chain conformation of molecules. The effect of temperature on hardness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR specimens filled with carbon black and silica was decreased by increasing filler content.
