In order to characterize insulation properties of epoxy/micro-silica/nano-silicate composite (EMNC), long-term and short-term AC treeing tests were carried out undr non-uniform electric field generated between needle-plate electrodes. In a long-term test, a 10 kV (60 Hz) electrical field was applied to the specimen positioned between the electrodes with a distance of 2.7 mm in an insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$, and a typical branch type electrical tree was observed in the neat epoxy resin and breakdown took place at 1,042 min after applying the 10 kVelectrical field. Meanwhile, the spherical tree with the tree length of $237{\mu}m$ was seen in EMNC-65-0.3 at 52,380 min (36.4 day) and then the test was stopped because the tree propagation rate was too low. In the short-term test, an electrial field was applied to a 3.5 mm-thick specimen at an increasing voltage rate of 0.5 kV/s until breakdown in insulating oil bath at $30^{\circ}C$ and $130^{\circ}C$, and the data was estimated by Weibull statistical analysis. The electrical insulation breakdown strength for neat epoxy resin was 1,763 kV/mm at $30^{\circ}C$, while that for EMNC-65-0.3 was 2,604 kV/mm, which was a modified value of 47%. As was expected, the breakdown strength decreased at higher test temperatures.
The effects of additive ions on the generation of metallic nanoparticles were evaluated using a corona induced supersonic nozzle. Applying the corona discharge to the nanoparticle generator, a tungsten needle and the supersonic nozzle are used as an anode electrode and a cathode electrode respectively. The corona ions act as nuclei for the silver vapor condensation. The ion density was controlled precisely as varying the applied voltage between electrode and nozzle. The mean diameter of the silver particle decreases as the ion density increases. However, the number concentration of the silver particle tended to increase with the ion density. The size distribution is more uniform as the ion density increases.
Two types of polymeric micro-needles with 250 and $750{\mu}m$ lengths were prepared by a micromolding process. The geometry of dissolving micro-needles with minoxidil was investigated and the mechanical property of polymer micro-needles was also evaluated. Water dissolving micro-needles containing minoxidil were successfully inserted into skin and delivered minoxidil to the skin layer after 30 min of insertion. The observed hair growth was less when the minoxidil treatment was not applied or used without the micro-needles than that the minoxidil was applied by micro-needles. Histologically, these hair follicles became bigger, and the hair papillae were totally encircled by the hair bulbs. In this feasibility test, we show the successful delivery of minoxidil, and effective treatment of hair loss can be possible by using dissolving micro-needles with minoxidil.
Recently, due to high theoretical capacitance and excellent ion diffusion rate caused by the 2D layered crystal structure, transition metal hydroxides (TMHs) have generated considerable attention as active materials in supercapacitors (or electrochemical capacitors). However, TMHs should be designed using morphological or structural modification if they are to be used as active materials in supercapacitors, because they have insulation properties that induce low charge transfer rate. This study aims to modify the morphological structure for high cycling stability and fast charge storage kinetics of TMHs through the use of nickel cobalt hydroxide [NiCo(OH)2] decorated on nickel foam. Among the samples used, needle-like NiCo(OH)2 decorated on nickel foam offers a high specific capacitance (1110.9 F/g at current density of 0.5 A/g) with good rate capability (1110.9 - 746.7 F/g at current densities of 0.5 - 10.0 A/g). Moreover, at a high current density (10.0 A/g), a remarkable capacitance (713.8 F/g) and capacitance retention of 95.6% after 5000 cycles are noted. These results are attributed to high charge storage sites of needle-like NiCo(OH)2 and uniformly grown NiCo(OH)2 on nickel foam surface.
Effects of austenitizing, cryogenic treatment and tempering conditions on the phase change, microstructure and Vickers hardness value have been studied in STD11 steel for tool and die. The volume fraction of retained austenite increased with a rise in austenitizing temperature, while the volume fraction of eutectoid $M_7C_3$ carbides decreased. The retained austenite could be reduced by cryogenic treatment i.e., maintaining at $LN_2$ temperature ($-196^{\circ}C$) for 12hrs but a little amount of retained austenite did not transform to martensite further although holding time increased to 24 hrs or more. The microstructure of the quenched and then cryogenictreated specimen showed nano-sized and needle-shaped carbides in matrix due to the decomposition of martensite by tempering, but that of the one without cryogenic treatment still revealed retained austenite by tempering even at $500^{\circ}C$.
When forming the ceramic body with plastic mass, it is needed that a quantitative testing method for plasticity, not only to evaluate the plasticity of a body, but also to control it within limits. Although many testing instruments were introduced, but no handy testing instrument for the plasticity quantitatively has been developed. In this study, modified vicat needle was designed to handily evaluate the plasicity of extruding bodies for honeycomb. The plasticity of three plastic masses was tested with this equipment. Columned needle with 2 mm diameter was adopted to measure the resistance for deformation and spherical needle with 9.5 mm diameter was adopted to measure the amount of deformation before cracking. The plasticity of three tested bodies were clearly distinguished quantitatively each other and the testing results were helpful to evaluated the workability of theses bodies. Probably, it is possible to evaluate the plasticity of various ceramic bodies with this apparatus, if suitable diameters of columns and spheres are selected.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of nanotubular Ti-25Nb-xZr ternary alloys for dental implant materials. Materials and Methods: Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys with different Zr contents (0, 3, 7, and 15 wt.%) were manufactured using commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti), niobium (Nb), and zirconium (Zr) (99.95 wt.% purity). The alloys were prepared by arc melting in argon (Ar) atmosphere. The Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys were homogenized in Ar atmosphere at $1,000^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours followed by quenching into ice water. The microstructure of the Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was examined by a field emission scanning electron microscope. The phases in the alloys were identified by an X-ray diffractometer. The chemical composition of the nanotube-formed surfaces was determined by energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Self-organized $TiO_2$ was prepared by electrochemical oxidation of the samples in a $1.0M\;H_3PO_4+0.8wt.%$ NaF electrolyte. The anodization potential was 30 V and time was 1 hour by DC supplier. Surface wettability was evaluated for both the metallographically polished and nanotube-formed surfaces using a contact-angle goniometer. The corrosion properties of the specimens were investigated using a 0.9 wt.% aqueous solution of NaCl at $36^{\circ}C{\pm}5^{\circ}C$ using a potentiodynamic polarization test. Result: Needle-like structure of Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys was transform to equiaxed structure as Zr content increased. Nanotube formed on Ti-25Nb-xZr alloys show two sizes of nanotube structure. The diameters of the large tubes decreased and small tubes increased as Zr content increased. The lower contact angles for nanotube formed Ti-25NbxZr alloys surfaces showed compare to non-nanotube formed surface. The corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface showed longer the passive regions compared to non-treatment surface. Conclusion: It is confirmed that corrosion resistance of alloy increased as Zr content increased, and nanotube formed surface has longer passive region compared to without treatment surface.
Nano-sized hydroxyapatite (HAp) powders were synthesized by a microwave-hydrothermal method using $H_3PO_4\;and\;Ca(OH)_2$ as starting materials. The applied microwave powers and mole ratio of Ca/P were served as powerful factors in the synthesis of calcium phosphate. In the case of relatively low microwave power of 450 Wand Ca/P ratio of 1.57, the mixed calcium phosphate compounds were detected in the synthesized powders. But in the case of running at 550 Wand 1.67(Ca/P), the synthesized powder showed the monophase of HAp having two kinds of morphologies. One was a needle shape with $5\~15\;nm$ in width and $20\~50\;nm$ in length, and the other was a spherical shape of $10\~40\;nm$ in diameter.
The aim of this study was to investigate effects of hafnium content on the corrosion behavior of Ti alloys in electrolyte containing chloride ion. For this study, Ti-Hf binary alloys contained 10 wt%, 20 wt% and 30 wt% Hf were manufactured in a vacuum arc-melting furnace and subjected to heat treatment for 12h at $1000^{\circ}C$ in an argon atmosphere. The pitting corrosion behavior of the specimens was examined through potentiodynamic and potentiostatic tests in 0.9 wt% NaCl electrolyte at $36.5{\pm}1^{\circ}C$. The corrosion morphology of Ti-xHf alloys was investigated using optical microscopy (OM) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). From the optical microstructures and XRD results, needle-like martensite ($\alpha$') phases of the Ti-xHf alloys increased with an increase of Hf addition. Corrosion current density $(I_{corr})$ and current density $(I_{300mV})$ in passive region decreased, whereas, corrosion potential increased with Hf content. At the constant potential ($300mV_{SCE}$), current density decreased as time increased.

Superhydrophobic surfaces on alloyed steels were fabricated with a non-conventional method of plasma etching and subsequent water immersion procedure. High aspect ratio nanopatterns of nanoflake or nano-needle were created on the steels with various Cr content in its composition. With CF4 plasma treatment in radio-frequence chemical vapor deposition (r.-f. CVD) method, steel surfaces were etched and fluorinated by CF4 plasma, which induced the nanopattern evolution through the water immersion process. It was found that fluorine ion played a role as a catalyst to form nanopatterns in water elucidated with XPS and TEM analysis. The hierarchical patterns in micro- and nano scale leads to superhydrophobic properties on the surfaces by deposition of a hydrophobic coating with a-C:H:Si:O film deposited with a gas precursor of hexamethlydisiloxane (HMDSO) with its lower surface energy of 24.2 mN/m, similar to that of curticular wax covering lotus surfaces. Since this method is based on plasma dry etching & coating, precise patterning of surface texturing would be potential on steel or metal surfaces. Patterned hydrophobic steel surfaces were demonstrated by mimicking the Robinia pseudoacacia or acacia leaf, on which water was collected from the humid air using a patterned hydrophobicity on the steels. It is expected that this facile, non-toxic and fast technique would accelerate the large-scale production of superhydrophobic engineering materials with industrial applications.
