  • The riverbed structures and heavy metal concentrations of the sediments in the Naktong River, Western Naktong River, and Suyoung Stream were investigated, and then the correlationships between heavy metals were examined. Naktong River was the deepest among the three streams. The deepest and the shallowest sites were site 11(11.58m) and 9(3.35m) in Naktong River, site 7(6.25m) and 4(2.06m) in Western Naktong River, add site 8(2.89m) and 1(0.61m) in Suyoung Stream, respectively. The mean concentration of Cd(45.79ppm) was higher in the sediment of Western Naktong River than in other two streams and those of Pb(76.25ppm), Cr(48.13ppm), and Cu(77.50ppm) were higher in the sediment of Suyovng Stream than in other two streams. The analytical results for correlationships between heavy metals showed that Cu was highly correlated with Cr and Pb was very highly correlated with Cr and Cu in Naktong River. Cu was relatively highly correlated with Cd and Cr and Cr was highly correlated with Pb in Western Naktong River Cd was relatively higlky correlated with Pb and Cu and Cr and Cd, Pb, Cu and Pb, Cr were highly correlated in Suyoung Stream.

  • The aquatic quality of the Naktong river after two or three months in June, 1991 with phenol spillage from a electrical factory in Kumi was investigated. The samples were collected at six sites of the Naktong river basin and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. Phenol was not detected from all water samples. Turbidity was very much increased to the down stream in the Naktong river. The BOD and COD values exceeded the 2nd grade(3mg/l) of the Korean standard quality of Environmenal Water Act at the all sampling sites of the Naktong river. Especially, the value of COD at Kaejin (12.5mg/l) was poorly classified as to the 5th grade of water class for the environmental quality standards. Organophosphorous pesticides such as parathion, malathion, fenitrothion and diazinon were investigated but not detected. Diazinon was only detected at the Ilsan bridge(1.42ppb), Okkye stream(6.95ppb), Waekwan bridge(0.32ppb), Gangjung reservior(0.13ppb), Kaejin (0.05ppb). Of the carbamates such as carbanyl, isoprocarb and cabofuran, the carbofuran was detected all sites except tap water, and Kachang and Kongsan lakes. The content of heavy metals such as Cd, Pb, Zn, Fe, Mn, Hg were not exceeding for drinking water standards at the all sampling region, but only mecury was detected from Okkye stream(0.018ppb) and Kaejin (0.09ppb). In the regions of Kachang and Kongsan lakes, the content of heavy meatals were lower than that of reservior of Naktong river.

  • Heterotrophic activity, total bacteria and salinity were determined seasonally in the estuary of Naktong River over half tidal cycle. Heterotrophic activity was determined by the uptake of [U- $^{14}$ C]glucose. Heterotrophic activity fluctuated with the tides and was decreased as salinity increased. Teh great activity occurred near low ebb tide at all seasons except summer. The main environmental factor affecting hetreotrophic activity was the salinity rather than water temperature in the estuary of Naktong River. In order to estimate the effect of salt, salt was added to estuarine water. Vmax for glucose of salt-added water was 17% and 77% of original estuarine water at station 1 and 2 respectively and slight increase was observed at station 3. Respiration rate and Kt+Sn for glucose of salt-added sample increased at all 3 stations. The increase of the Kt value implies the reduced affinity of bacterial population for glucose. The effects of salinity on the heterotrophic activity were more extensive in the upper region of estuary than at the mouth.

  • Two species of the genus Koreocobitis in Korea are reviewed with a key to species and their illustrations: Koreocobitis rotundicaudata and K. naktongensis sp. nov. A new species, Koreocobitis naktongensis is described based on 9 specimens collected from the Naktong River, Korea. The new species is distinguished from Koreocobitis rotundicaudata by the following combination of characters: yellow body colouration with many brownish speckles, truncate caudal fin, fewer vertebrae, and longer head. It is remarked biogeographically that Koreocobitis naktongensis is distributed only in the Naktong River, Korea.

  • Environmental parameters and physiological characteristics of heterotrophic bacterial isolates were compared by factor analysis to investigate the influences of river barrage construction on the ecosystem of Naktong River Estuary. Aftcr the construction of river barrage, the influence of seawater was no longer significant. ant1 the influences of nutrients loading were increased from 50.7% to 77.1% of the environmental variances before and after the construction, respectively. The interpretations of features of bacterial physiological characteristics were closely related to environmental parameters as the results of factor analysis. But. differing from the environmental variances. it was found that the halophilic feature was the third factor of bacterial characteristics after the construction of river barrage. This suggests that the stability of Naktong estuarine ecosystem and heterotrophic bacterial characteristics are not established till now.

  • This study was carried out to investigate nitrification in the main stream of the Naktong river for two times, 12-13 August and 23-26 September 1982. The results of this study were as follows : 1. The increase of nitrogen concentration was due to inflow of Geumho river, which was polluted by the municipal and industrial wastewater of Daegu city. 2. The rate constant of ammonia calculated for three reaches was high according to the stream flow and was eminently low in the reach from Goroung to Gangjung. (0.068-0.116 $day^{-1}$). This phenomena might be attributed to the sublethal or even lethal effect upon aquatic life by relatively low DO concentration and high heavy metal concentration. 3. DO consumption rate by nitrification was highest for the reach from Goroung to Daeam where was affected by Geumho river. (56.7-147.8%). This phenomena might be attributed to low DO concentration and high nitrogen concentration. Especially, the less stream flow was, the higher DO consumption was. And so, nitrification in the station where is low DO concentration, especially under the low flow condition, might cause more serious water quality management problem. Therefore, for the purpose of effective conservation of water quality in the Naktong river, it was suggested that We have more concern about the nitrogen compound, and more study on the nitrification phenomena.

  • The results of water analysis for 10 stations in the main Naktong and 11 stations in the tributaries from March to December 1968 are as follows: The water quality of the Naktong River Basin is generally the frist class of water, especially the tributaries, Hwang river, Nam river, Milyang river, Naesongchun, Hoechun, Wichun and Panbyunchun were dissolved in less than 100 mg/l as the amount of the total ion of the main component. In comparison with river discharge, the amount of the total ion of the main component is decreased in June and July, because of the river discharge is increased in those periods. According to the measurement of the conductivity and the hardness, the better water quality is distinguished by the following order: lower part of river (Namji), middle part of river (Waegwan), upper part of river (Yean). The conductivity of Kumho river, Tongchon is higher than the middle part of the main river and Nam river, Chongam is smaller than lower part of the main rivller. The variation of the amount of the total ion of main component in the basin is mainly effected by $HCO_3^-, SO_4^{-2}, Cl^-, Ca^{+2}$. The relationship between $[K^+]\;and\;[C^l-]\;and\;[Na^+]\;and\;[Cl^-]\;are\;[K^+]=0.04\;[Cl^-]+1.7\;mg/l,\;[Na^+]=0.06\;[Cl^-]$ mg/l .The main river was much contaminated by Kumho river and C.O.D. at Gang-chung, Kumho river in June was recorder over the standard about 7 times.
