  • This study was performed to investigate the recovery efficacy of 2-methylisobomeol (2-MIB) and Geosmin, odor contaminants produced by algae, by pretreatment techniques, and also to investigate both adsorption characteristics and removal efficiency to get some information for the effective removal of 2-MIB and Geosmin by batch experiments. In pretreatment experiments, the best recovery efficiency of both odorants at 0.2 and $2\;{\mu}g/L$ in raw water was 30 mL of sampling size, 9 g NaCl for salting out headspace of sampling phase and 40 minutes of adsorption. At the best condition, the recovery efficiency of 2-MIB was 85% at $0.2\;{\mu}g/L$ and 95% at $2\;{\mu}g/L$, whereas the efficiency of Geosmin was lower than that of 2-MIB : 61% at $0.2\;{\mu}g/L$ and 81% at $2\;{\mu}g/L$. In batch experiments, the removal efficiency of the Geosmin and 2-MIB by adsorbents using distilled water were increased in comparison with raw water, the efficiency in raw water was little different by their concentrations. When these results were applied to the Freundrich adsorption isotherm, the K value of 2-MIB for zeolite, coal activated carbon, and coconut activated carbon was 0.671, 1.811, and 1.340, respectively, and the value of Geosmin was 0.6125, 1.771, and 1.5191, respectively. Thus the adsorption efficiency of 2-MIB and Geosmin was in the order of zeolite, coconut activated carbon, coal activated carbon.

  • Sodium type faujasite(FAU) zeolite layers with diverse materials characteristics(Si/Al ratio, thickness, and structural discontinuity) were hydrothermally grown on a porous $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ tube, and then the $CO_2/N_2$ separation was evaluated at $30^{\circ}C$ for an equimolar mixture of $CO_2$ and $N_2$. Among hydrothermal conditions, $SiO_2$ content in hydrothermal solution seriously affected materials characteristics: with an increment in the $SiO_2$ content, Si/Al ratio, thickness, and structural discontinuity of grown FAU zeolite layer simultaneously increased. The present study reveals that structural discontinuity(intercrystalline voids due to an incomplete densification and cracks induced by GIS Na-P1 phase) is the most important variable affecting the $CO_2/N_2$ separation. Also, it was suggested that the $CO_2$ desorption in permeate side be the rate-determining(slowest) step in the overall $CO_2$ permeation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate some mineralogical characteristics of Artificial Granular Zeolite (AGZ) and effect of AGZ on purification and alleviation of rice seedling damages of mine wastewater containing heavy metals. AGZ had mainly representative Na-P1 peaks and some $C_3S$ peaks of Portland cement in X-ray diffractogram. Differential thermal analysis represented that AGZ had weak endothermic peak around $130^{\circ}C$ and new deep endothermic peak around $750^{\circ}C$ as compared to powdery artificial zeolite. The ranking of heavy metals removals by AGZ, was lead> copper> cadmium> zinc in the synthetic wastewater. Root growth of rice seedling was greatly inhibited in the mine wastewater, and died after all. As AGZ treated into the mine wastewater with the ratio 1 : 50 (W : V) for one day or 1 : 100 for 4 days, the concentrations of heavy metals in the mine wastewater were decreased to below the critical concentration for agricultural use. And rice seedlings were grew with little damages in the purified water by AGZ.

  • BACKGROUND: Entomopathogenic fungi have been studied to develop for biological control agents as an alternative to chemical control agents in insect pest management. This investigated to determine the optimal culture conditions in ceramic balls for maximal sporulation of entomopathogenic fungi Beauveria bassiana M130 by use rice bran extract.METHODS AND RESULTS: METHODS AND RESULTS: A culture of entomopathogenic fungi for 12day on rice bran extract(1:8, w/v) incubated in ceramic matrix at 28℃. Natural zeolite ceramic ball was high production of 4.2×108 conidial/mL. The culture condition optimized initial pH, temperature, rice bran extract concentration, adhesives substance and concentration of NaCl, respectively. The high production of spore optimal conditions were temperature 28℃, initial pH 3, rice bran extract 3 mL, starch 33 g, 5 % NaCl and sopre suspension 7 mL, respectively.CONCLUSION: This study was carried out for the mass production of entomopathogenic fungi conidia recover rate 65% in matrix of natural zeolite ceramic ball, and to develop ingredient-used formulation of Beauveria bassiana M130 conidia for biological control agents.

  • Various applied-mineralogical characterization including measurements of surface area, size distribution, swelling index, and viscosity were done for some domestic bentonites in order to decipher the rheological properties and their controlling factors. The bentonites, which are Ca-type and relatively low-grade (rnontmorillonite contents: 30 ∼ 75 wt%), occur mostly as subhedral lamellas with the size range of 2 ∼ 4 $\mu\textrm{m}$. The size distribution of mineral fractions in bentonite suspension is dominant in the range of 10 ∼ 100 $\mu\textrm{m}$, and though rather complicated, exhibits roughly bimodal patterns. The feature is more conspicuous in the case of zeolitic bentonite. The bentonites have surface areas ranging 269 ∼ 735 $\m^2$/g, which are measured by EGME adsorption method. The EGME surface areas are nearly proportional to the rnontmorillonite contents, moisture contents, or total CEC. In the surface area measurements, zeolitic bentonites have slightly higher values than those zeolite- free types. The measured swelling index and viscosity of domestic bentonites are comparatively low in values. The swelling values of bentonites were measured to be 250∼500% at maximum by progressively mixing amounts of 2 ∼ 5 wt% Na$_2$CO$_3$, which varies depending on the contents of rnontmorillonite and other impurities, especially zeolite. Much amount of sodium carbonate is required for optimum swelling property of zeolitic bentonited which has usually strong Na- exchanged capacity. The bentonites, which are comparatively feldspar-rich and low in size and crystallinity, tend to be higher in viscosity values. Tn addition, the viscosity is largely higher in case of the bentonites with higher pH in suspension. However, the rheological properties of bentonites such as swelling index and viscosity do not show any obvious relationships with rnontmorillonite contents and mean particle size in suspension. In contrast, roughly speaking, the swelling index of bentonites is reversely proportional to the values of surface area which can be regarded as a collective physico-chemical parameter encompassing all the effects caused by mineral composition, surface charge, particle size, morphological farm, and etc. in bentonites. Thus, the rheological properties in bentonite suspension appear to be rather complicated characteristics which mainly depend on the flocculation of clay particles and the mode of particle association, i.e. quasicrystals, controlled by surface charge, morphology, size, and texture of rnon-tmorillonite, and which partly affected by the finer impurities such as zeolite.
