  • Although Dielectric Barrier Discharge (DBD) in air has been applied to a wider range of aftertreatment processes for HAPs(Hazardous Air Pollutants), due to its high electron density and energy, its potential use as precharging dust particles is not well known. In this work, we measured size distributions of bimodal aerosol particles and estimated collection efficiency of the particles by electrostatic precipitator(ESP) using DBD as particle charger. To examine the particle collection with DBD charger, nano size particles of NaCl($20{\sim}100$ nm) and DOS($50{\sim}800$ nm) were generated by tube furnace and atomizer, respectively. For experimental conditions of 60 Hz, 11 kV, and 60 lpm, the particle collection efficiency for the hybrid system comprising DBD charger and ESP was over 85 %, based on the number of particles captured.

  • In automobile chassis system, several environmental factors weaken durability of automobile's components. The environmental factors are temperature, humidity, intensity of radiation and dust particle inflow. Especially, dust particle inflow leads to increase in friction and wear of automobile's components. The wear of automobile's component leads to increase in noise and exerts a bad influence on life of components. In this study, dust particles were investigated for study on the influence of dust particle inflow. Dust particles are collected on urban area, rural area and highway in China. The size of dust particle is analyzed using the image plus program, and the element of dust particle is analyzed using the SEM and EDX. The elements of dust particle are $SiO_2$ and $Al_{2}O_{3}$. The other elements(Na, Ca, Cl etc..) are detected on urban area and highway.

  • Cement-bonded particleboard is being used as outdoor siding material all over the world, because this composite particularly bears a light weight, high resistance against fire, decay, and crack by cyclic freezing and thawing, anti-shock property, and strength enhancement. Construction systems are currently changing into a frame-building style and wooden houses are being constructed with prefabrication type. Therefore, they require a more durability at outdoor-exposed sides. In this study, the cement hydration property for Korean pine particle, Japanese larch particle and face- and middle layer particles (designated as PB particle below) used in Korean particleboard-manufacturing company was investigated, and the rapid manufacturing characteristics of cement-bonded particleboard by supercritical $CO_2$ curing was evaluated. Korean pine flour showed a good hydration property, however, larch flour showed a bad one. PB particle had a better hydration property than larch flour. The addition of $Na_2SiO_3$ indicated a negative effect on hydration, however, $MgCl_2$ had a positive one. Curing by supercritical $CO_2$ fluid gave a conspicuous enhancement in the performances of cement-bonded particleboards compared to conventional curing. $MgCl_2$ 3%-added PB particle had the highest properties, and $MgCl_2$ 1%-added Korean pine particle had the second class with the conditions of cement/wood ratio of 2.7, a small fraction-screened particle and supercritical curing. On the contrary, the composition of non-hammermilled or large fraction-screened particle at cement/wood ratio of 2.2 was poorer. Also, the feasibility for actual use of 3%-added, small PB particle-screened fraction was greatest of all the conventional curing treatments. Relative superiority of supercritical curing vs. conventional curing at dimensional stability was not so apparent as in strength properties. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, it was ascertained that the peak of a component $CaCO_3$ was highest, and the two weak peaks of calcium silicate hydrate and ettringite and $Ca(OH)_2$ were present in supercritical treatment. Accordingly, it was inferred that the increased formation of carbonates in board contributes to strength enhancement.

  • Twelve-hour size-resolved atmospheric aerosols were measured to determine size distributions of water-soluble organic carbon(WSOC) during daytime and nighttime, and to investigate sources and formation pathways of WSOC in individual particle size classes. Mass, WSOC, ${NO_3}^-$, $K^+$, and $Cl^-$ at day and night showed mostly bimodal size distributions, peaking at the size range of $0.32-0.55{\mu}m$(condensation mode) and $3.1-6.2{\mu}m$(coarse mode), respectively, with a predominant condensation mode and a minor coarse mode. While ${NH_4}^+$ and ${SO_4}^{2-}$ showed unimodal size distributions which peaked between 0.32 and $0.55{\mu}m$. WSOC was enriched into nuclei mode particles(< $0.1{\mu}m$) based on the WSOC-to-mass and WSOC-to-water soluble species ratios. The sources and formation mechanisms of WSOC were inferred in reference to the size distribution characteristics of inorganic species(${SO_4}^{2-}$, ${NO_3}^-$, $K^+$, $Ca^{2+}$, $Na^+$, and $Cl^-$) and carbon monoxide. Nuclei mode WSOC was likely associated with primary combustion sources during daytime and nighttime. Among significant sources contributing to the condensation mode WSOC were homogeneous gas-phase oxidation of VOCs, primary combustion emissions, and fresh(or slightly aged) biomass burning aerosols. The droplet mode WSOC could be attributed to aqueous oxidation of VOCs in clouds, cloud-processed biomass burning aerosols, and small contributions from primary combustion sources. From the correlations between WSOC and soil-related particles, and between WSOC and sea-salt particles, it is suggested that the coarse mode WSOC during daytime is likely to condense on the soil-related particles($K^+$ and $Ca^{2+}$), while the WSOC in the coarse fraction during nighttime is likely associated with the sea-salt particles($Na^+$).

  • The present study investigated the effect of a water-washing process, which is part of the acid hydrometallurgical process for recovery of high purity of zinc, on the removal of alkali metals and chlorides (Na, K, Ca, Cl) from Electric arc furnace dust (EAFD). Two EAFD samples with different properties were characterized by particle size, XRD and element analysis, and their washing efficiencies (%) on alkali metals and chlorides were compared according to pH, washing time, liquid to solid (L/S) ratio and number of washings. The results show that the alkali metals and chlorides could be effectively removed by the washing (at L/S ration of 3 for more than 30 min., pH 10~11) while minimizing loss of zinc (<0.1%), in which the washing efficiency was Na-78%, K-76%, Cl >99%, respectively. Na and K could be removed up to 97% and 89% respectively by 3 times of repeated washings. With increased sample volume (10 times) of the mixed (1:1, w/w) sample with two types of EAFD, it was confirmed that the pH(10~11) can be used as the main process control parameter for the washing of the alkali metals regardless of EAFD properties.

  • In this study, copper (II) oxide powder for electroplating was prepared by recovering CuCl2 from NaClO3 type etching wastes via recovered non-sintering two step chemical reaction. In case of alkali copper carbonate [mCuCo3·nCu(OH)2], first reaction product, CuCo3 is produced more than Cu(OH)2 when the reaction molar ratio of sodium carbonate is low, since m is larger than n. As the reaction molar ratio of sodium carbonate increased, m is larger than n and Cu(OH)2 was produced more than CuCO3. In the case of m has same values as n, the optimum reaction mole ratio was 1.44 at the reaction temperature of 80℃ based on the theoretical copper content of 57.5 wt. %. The optimum amount of sodium hydroxide was 120 g at 80℃ for production of copper (II) oxide prepared by using basic copper carbonate product of first reaction. At this time, the yield of copper (II) oxide was 96.6 wt.%. Also, the chloride ion concentration was 9.7 mg/L. The properties of produced copper (II) oxide such as mean particle size, dissolution time for sulfuric acid, and repose angle were 19.5 mm, 64 second, and 34.8°, respectively. As a result of the hole filling test, it was found that the copper oxide (II) prepared with 120 g of sodium hydroxide, the optimum amount of basic hydroxide for copper carbonate, has a hole filling of 11.0 mm, which satisfies the general hole filling management range of 15 mm or less.

  • A new unipolar aerosol charger was developed by using an indirect photoelectric charging. The charger consists of two coaxial tubes, the inner UV lamp wrapped with stainless mesh and the outer Al cylinder. In this study, the effects of flow rate, particle size, and electric field were examined to search the optimal charging conditions with experimental and numerical methods. Monodisperse NaCl particles were fed into an annular space and the particles were charged by negative ions generated from Al plate exposed to the UV light. According to experimental results, the average number of elementary charge on particles increases from 2.5 to 5.5 as particle size increases from 50nm to 130nm at 2.5 L/min and 100V. The average number of elementary charge on particles was maximized at 25V as the electric potential between the stainless mesh and Al plate was varied from 0V to 400V.

  • The surface flatness of metal meshes in a deflector of particle beam mass spectrometer (PBMS) required ideally flat, and this can specify the particle trajectories which goes through the detector. In this research, charged particle current was measured using the different surface roughness deflectors. NaCl particles were generated monodispersed in its size by using differential mobility analyzer and the whole processes were followed the way calibrating PBMS. The results indicate that the mesh surface morphology in the deflector can affect to the particle size and the concentration errors, and sensitivity of PBMS.

  • There was no significant difference in the CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) between physical aerosols, NaCl and smoke, and biological aerosols, airborne MS2 virus and P. fluorescens, which implicate that the hybrid-type of air purifier, applying the unipolar ion emission and the radiant catalytic ionization, imposed identical reduction effect on both physical aerosol and bioaerosol. Ventilation decreases the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization because high ventilation diminishes the particle concentration reduction effect. The particle removal efficiency decreases with increase in the chamber volume because of the augmented ion diffusion and higher ion wall loss rate. Particle size affects the efficiency of air ionization. The efficiency is high for particles with very small diameter because reduction of charge increases with particle size. If there is no increasing supply of ions, the efficiency of air cleaning by unipolar ionization increases with respect to initial concentration of particles because of the large space charge effect at high particle concentration and amplified electric field.

  • The purpose of this research is to find out the collection property of nanoparticle in diffusion filter to know particle size dispersion of nanomaterial using inertial force and principle of Brownian diffusion motion. We used inertial filters which are two different type and diffusion filters made by various kinds of Wiremesh and the different pieces of filter to compare with particle size distribution using NaCl particles. Finally, We made a conclusion as follows : (1) the bigger available charging volume is and the larger specific surface area of inertial filter is, the better collection efficiency is. (2) The higher wire-mesh number of filter is, the more collection efficiency of small particle is increasing because the wire of the higher Wiremesh number filter is thinner and denser. (3) The more pieces of wire-mesh filter, the more collection efficiency is increasing because it makes the residence time longer.
