  • The aim of this research was to evaluate the performance of insoluble electrode for the purpose of degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) and oxidants generation [N,N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of OH radical), $O_3$, $H_2O_2$, free Cl, $ClO_2$)]. Methods: Four kinds of electrodes were used for comparison: DSA (dimensional stable anode; Pt and JP202 electrode), Pb and boron doping diamond (BDD) electrode. The effect of applied current (0.5~2.5 A), electrolyte type (NaCl, KCl and $Na_2SO_4$) and electrolyte concentration (0.5~3.5 g/L) on the RNO degradation were evaluated. Experimental results showed that the order of RhB removal efficiency lie in: JP202 > Pb > BDD ${\fallingdotseq}$ > Pt. However, when concerned the electric power on maintaining current of 1 A during electrolysis reaction, the order of RhB removal efficiency was changed: JP202 > Pt ${\fallingdotseq}$ Pb > BDD. The total generated oxidants ($H_2O_2$, $O_3$, free Cl, $ClO_2$) concentration of 4 electrodes was Pt (6.04 mg/W) > JP202 (4.81 mg/W) > Pb (3.61 mg/W) > BDD (1.54 mg/W), respectively. JP202 electrode was the best electrode among 4 electrodes from the point of view of performance and energy consumption. Regardless of the type of electrode, RNO removal of NaCl and KCl (chlorine type electrolyte) were higher than that of the $Na_2SO_4$ (sulfuric type electrolyte) RNO removal. Except BDD electrode, RhB degradation and creation tendency of oxidants such as $H_2O_2$, $O_3$, free Cl and $ClO_2$, found that do not match. RNO degradation tendency were considered a simple way to decide the method which is simple it will be able to determinate the electrode where the organic matter decomposition performance is superior. As the added NaCl concentration was increases, the of hydrogen peroxide and ozone concentration increases, and this was thought to increase the quantity of OH radical.

  • Changes in urinary $Na^+$ and $K^+$ excretions, renal cortical microsomal $Na^+$ -K-ATPase activity, cortical tissue electrolyte content and plasma aldosterone level were studied in rats treated with CdCl2 (2 mg Cd/kg/day, s.c. injection) for 7-14 days. After 7 days of cadmium exposure, urinary excretion of $Na^+$ was markedly reduced. This change was accompanied by an increase in $Na^+$-$K^+$-ATPase activity, a fall in tissue $Na^+$ content, a rise in tissue $K^+$ content and an elevation of plasma aldosterone level.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the efficacy of surface sterilization and the physicochemical properties of electrolyzed water manufactured from various electrolytic diaphragm and electrolyte. Physical properties of electrolyzed water manufactured from the diaphragm system were the most effective at the following conditions; the distance between diaphragms was 1.0 mm and the supplying rate of 20% NaCl was 6 mL/min. The ORP, HClO content and pH at above conditions were 1,170 mV, 100 ppm and 2.5, respectively. And two stage electrolyzed system was more effective than one stage electrolyzed water manufactured from non-diaphragm system, with 4 mL/min supplying rate of 20% NaCl, was similar to the most effective diaphragm system. But ORP, HClO content and pH were abut 800 mV, 200 ppm and 9 level, respectively. Sealed electrolyzed water could be preserved more than one month at room temperature with ORP of 750 mV in non-diaphragm system and 1,150 mV in diaphragm system, and HClO content of 100 ppm. Twelve kinds of microorganism tested were sterilized within 30 seconds from initial total counts of 10$\^$5/∼10$\^$6/cfu/ml by electrolyzed water. Though the ORP and HCIO contents of electrolyzed water manufactured from various electrolyte were higher in order of NaCl>KCl>CaCl$_2$, there were no difference between the electyolytes in the efficacy of sterilization. Salmonella typhi and Vibrio Proteolyticus were also sterilized by electrolyzed water manufactured from elctrolytes of NaCl CaC1$_2$and KCl

  • The purpose of this study is to degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB, dye) and N, N-Dimethyl-4-nitrosoaniline (RNO, indicator of the electro-generation of OH radical) in solution using boron doped diamond (BDD) electrode. The effects of applied current (0.2~1.0 A), electrolyte type (NaCl, KCl, and $Na_2SO_4$) and electrolyte concentration (0.5~3.0 g/L), solution pH (3~11) and air flow rate (0~4 L/min) were evaluated. Experimental results showed that RhB and RNO removal tendencies appeared with the almost similar thing, except of current. Optimum current for RhB degradation was 0.6 A, however, RNO degradations was increased with increase of applied current. The RhB and RNO degradation of Cl type electrolyte were higher than that of the sulfate type. The RhB and RNO degradation were increased with increase of NaCl concentration and optimum NaCl dosage was 2.5 g/L. The RhB and RNO concentrations were not influenced by pH under pH 7. Optimum air flow rate for the oxidants generation and RhB and RNO degradation were 2 L/min. Initial removal rate of electrolysis process was expressed Langmuir - Hinshelwood equation, which is used to express the initial removal rate of UV/$TiO_$2 process.

  • To improve the performance of aluminum-air batteries, it is very important to understand the effect of electrolytes on the electrochemical properties of electrodes. In this study, the effects of electrolyte cations on the electrochemical redox reactions proceeding at the negative and positive electrodes were investigated using electrolytes having the same anion but different cations such as NaCl, LiCl, CaCl2, and ZnCl2. It was confirmed by discharge test, scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis that electrolyte cations affect the discharge potential and specific capacity of the electrode. Precipitates were formed on the surface of the positive electrode by Ca2+ and Zn2+ ions, resulting in degradation of the performance of the positive electrode. In addition, Ca2+ ions passivated the negative electrode and accelerated the performance degradation. This suggests that the positive ions of the electrolyte have different effects on the electrochemical performance of the positive and negative electrodes.

  • Tallow fatty acid consists of mixtures of fatty acids differing in chain length and saturation. In separation of tallow fatty acid, the effects of the type and concentration of detergents and electrolytes were studied. And the changes of acid composition of particular fractions were determined by gas-chromatography. Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES) and sodium lauryl benzene sulfonate (SLBS) were used as detergents and NaCl, Na2SO4 and MgSO4 were used as electrolytes. At low concentration of detergent, the tallow fatty acid was not fully wetted, and at high concentration, the emulsion was so stable that the tallow fatty acid was not well separated. The addition of proper amount of electrolyte increased the separation efficiency by the decrease of interfacial tension and by the increase of the amount of adsorbed detergent on the surface of solid fatty acid crystals. The optimum range of detergent was 0.4-0.6% (wt.) in SLS, 0.2-0.4% in SLES and 2.0-) .0% in SLBS. And the optimum range of electrolyte was 2.0-2.5% in NaCl, 3.0-4.0% In Na2SO4 and 0.5-1.0% in MgSO4 respectively.

  • The salt concentration process in electrodialysis, which uses electrical energy to enhance ion concentrations in an aqueous electrolyte solution, has been studied on the transfer phenomenon of ions and water molecules over the ion exchange membrane. In this paper, we investigated various parameters for limiting concentration of electrolyte solution and the electroosmosis phenomenon in an electrodialysis system by varying salt concentration of electrolyte solution. The electroosmotic water transport was analyzed by measuring the ions and water fluxes in electrolyte solutions having two different NaCl concentrations (NaCl 2M/4M), and concentration change was observed for various volume ratios of the diluted reservoir to the concentration one As a result, it was found that the higher concentration of the aqueous electrolyte solution, the lower electroosmosis, and the higher volume ratio led to a higher concentration in the dilute reservoir, so the limiting concentration was enhanced and the specific energy consumption decreased.

  • The over-discharging phenomena in sodium-nickel chloride batteries were investigated in relation to decomposition of molten salt electrolyte and consequent metal co-deposition. From XRD analysis, the material deposited on graphite cathode current collector was revealed to be by-product of molten salt electrolyte decomposition. In particular, the result showed that the Ni-Al alloys ($Al_3Ni_2$, $Ni_3Al$ and $Al_3Ni$) were electrochemically deposited on graphite current collectors in line with over-discharging behaviors. It is assumed that the $NiCl_2$ solubility in molten salt electrolytes leads to the co-deposition of Ni-Al alloys by increasing metal deposition potential above 1.6 V (vs. $Na/Na^+$). The cell tests have revealed that the composition of molten salt electrolytes modified by various additives makes a decisive influence on the over-discharging behaviors of the cells. It was revealed that NaOCN addition to molten salt electrolytes was advantageous to suppress over-discharge reactions by modifying the characteristics of molten salt electrolytes. NaOCN addition into molten salt electrolytes seems to suppress Ni solubility by maintaining basic melts. The cell using modified molten salt electrolyte with NaOCN (Cell D) showed relatively less cell degradation compared with other cells for long cycles.
