Currently, Japan is undertaking a nationwide project to measure and map radioactive contamination around Fukushima, as part of the efforts to restore normalcy following the nuclear accident. The Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) manages the Fukushima Environmental Safety Center, located approximately 20 km north of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Minamisōma City, Fukushima Prefecture. In collaboration with the JAEA, this study involved conducting comparison experiments and analyses with radiation detectors in high radiation environments, a challenging task in Korean environments. Environmental radiation surveys were conducted using three types of detectors: CZT, NaI(Tl), and LaBr3(Ce), across two contaminated areas. Dose rate values were converted using dose rate conversion factors for each detector type, and dose rate maps were subsequently created and compared. The detectors yielded similar results, demonstrating their feasibility and reliability in high radiation environments. The findings of this study are expected to be a crucial reference for enhancing the verification and supplementation of procedures and methods in future radiation measurements and mobile surveys in high-radiation environments, using these three types of radiation instruments.

In this work, we describe the reduction kinetics of gold nanoparticles synthesized by plasma discharge in aqueous solutions with varied voltages and precursor (HAuCl4) concentrations. The reduction rate of [AuCl4]- was determined by introducing NaBr to the gold colloidal solution synthesized by plasma discharge, serving as a catalyst in the reduction process. We observed that [AuCl4]- was completely reduced when its characteristic absorption peak at 380 nm disappeared, indicating the absence of [AuCl4]- for ligand exchange with NaBr. The reduction rate notably increased with the rise in discharge voltage, attributable to the intensified plasma generated by ionization and excitation, which in turn accelerated the reduction kinetics. Regarding precursor concentration, a lower concentration was found to retard the reduction reaction, significantly influencing the reduction kinetics due to the presence of active H+ and H radicals. Therefore, the production of strong plasma with high plasma density was observed to enhance the reduction kinetics, as evidenced by optical emission spectroscopy.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of oxidized cellulose that had been selectively oxidized with TEMPO(2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine oxoammonium ion), NaBr and NaOCl substituting for 10% of the wheat flour in a yellow layer cake formula. Physicochemical and sensory characteristics of a cake containing oxidized cellulose were compared with a control cake and a cake containing non-oxidized cellulose(CNC). The cake sample with oxidized cellulose(COC) had smaller L and a values and greater b value than the control, with a greater cake volume. Results of sensory evaluation showed that grittiness of COC was about the same as that of the control, but weaker than that of CNC, and COC was more moist and less hard than the control. These observations indicated the possibility that the oxidized cellulose could be used as a dietary fiber in a cake without causing detrimental effect on textural characteristics.
The interaction of phenoxide anion with several cationic surfactant micelles (DTAB, TTAB, CTAB, CDEAB, and CTAC) was studied by UV/Vis spectrophotometric method. The solubilization constants of phenoxide anion into the cationic micellar phase and the critical micelle concentration of these surfactants in the presence of the phenoxide anion could be determined from the absorbance changes. The measured solubilization constants were changed according to the following order: $K_s(CTAC)>K_s(CDEAB)>K_s(CTAB)>K_s(TTAB)>K_s(DTAB).$ Effects of salts(NaCl and NaBr) and n-alcohols(butanol, pentanol, and hexanol) on the solubilization of phenoxide anion by the TTAB system have been also measured and analyzed. There was a great decrease of solubilization constant and CMC with these additives. The standard Gibbs free energy, enthalpy, and entropy changes for the solubilization of phenoxide anion by the TTAB system were calculated from the temperature dependence of $K_s$ values.

Mutations within the SCN5A gene, which encodes the α-subunit 5 (NaV1.5) of the voltage-gated Na+ channel, have been linked to three distinct cardiac arrhythmia disorders: long QT syndrome type 3, Brugada syndrome (BrS), and cardiac conduction disorder. In this study, we have identified novel missense mutations (p.A385T/R504T) within SCN5A in a patient exhibiting overlap arrhythmia phenotypes. This study aims to elucidate the functional consequences of SCN5A mutants (p.A385T/R504T) to understand the clinical phenotypes. Whole-cell patch-clamp technique was used to analyze the NaV1.5 current (INa) in HEK293 cells transfected with the wild-type and mutant SCN5A with or without SCN1B co-expression. The amplitude of INa was not altered in mutant SCN5A (p.A385T/R504T) alone. Furthermore, a rightward shift of the voltage-dependent inactivation and faster recovery from inactivation was observed, suggesting a gain-of-function state. Intriguingly, the co-expression of SCN1B with p.A385T/R504T revealed significant reduction of INa and slower recovery from inactivation, consistent with the loss-of-function in Na+ channels. The SCN1B dependent reduction of INa was also observed in a single mutation p.R504T, but p.A385T co-expressed with SCN1B showed no reduction. In contrast, the slower recovery from inactivation with SCN1B was observed in A385T while not in R504T. The expression of SCN1B is indispensable for the electrophysiological phenotype of BrS with the novel double mutations; p.A385T and p.R504T contributed to the slower recovery from inactivation and reduced current density of NaV1.5, respectively.
Among 23 cytochrome P450s, CYP125A4 was proposed as a putative monooxygenase based on the high level of amino acid sequence homology (54% identity and 75% similarity) with the well characterized C27-steroid $Mycobacterium$$tuberculosis$ CYP125A1. Utilizing MTBCYP125A1 as a template, homology modeling of SPCYP125A4 was conducted by Accelrys Discovery Studio 3.1 software. The modeled SPCYP125A4 structure with lowest energy value was subsequently assessed for its stereochemical quality and side-chain environment. The final model was generated by showing its active site through the molecular dynamics. The docking of steroids showed broad specificity of SPCYP125A4 with different orientation of ligand within active site facing the heme. One poses of C27-steroid with C26 facing the heme with distance of 3.734 ${\AA}$ from the Fe were predominant.

In this study, we fabricated a liquid light-guide-based radiation sensor with a LaBr3:Ce scintillator for remote gamma-ray spectroscopy. We acquired the energy spectra of Cs-137 and Co-60 using the proposed sensor, estimated the energy resolutions of the full energy peaks, and compared the scintillation light output variations. The major peaks of the radionuclides were observed in each result, and the estimated energy resolutions were similar to that of a general NaI(Tl) scintillation detector without a liquid light guide. Moreover, we showed the relationships of energy resolution and analog-to-digital channel regarding the number of photoelectrons produced and confirmed the effects of light guide length on remote gamma-ray spectroscopy. The proposed sensor is expected to be utilized to perform remote gamma-ray spectroscopy for distances of 3 m or more and would find application in many fields of nuclear facilities and industry.
The limiting equivalent conductances of LiCl, NaCl, KCl and KBr have been obtained in water using conductometric method from 1 to 2000 bars at $25^{\circ}C$. From the limiting equivalent ionic conductances (obtained using TATB[Tetraphenyl Arsonium Tetraphenyl Borate]method) of $Li^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Cl^-$, and $Br^-$ ions and viscosity of water at given pressure, their Stokes radii have been calculated. From the corrected radii caliberated by Nightingale method and the crystallographic radii at a given pressure, the volume of hydration-shell surrounding ion was calculated and hydration numbers of $Li^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Cl^-$, and $Br^-$ ions were obtained. From the experimental results, it was found that the hydration number of $Li^+$, $Na^+$, $K^+$, $Cl^-$, and $Br^-$ ions slightly decreased with increasing pressure. This trend may be explained by Horne's suggestion[Advances in High Pressure Research]. Comparing results of this study with those of Nakahara's, the hydration numbers of $K^+$ and $Cl^-$ ions were almost twice as large as those of Nakahara's[Rev. Phys. Chem. Japan, 42, 12 (1972)]. By comparing the present results with those of Kollman's [J. Am. Chem. Soc., 113, 2481 (1991)], the hydration number obtained by applying TATB method and Nightingale method may be inferred to be reasonable.
In this research, the organic salt [RCOOH] Br with long alkyl-chain was synthesized, and the organophilic [RCOOH]-Montmorillonite was formed by cation-exchange-reaction between Na-Montmorillonite and synthesized organic salt [RCOOH] Br. After drying of the organophilic [RCOOH]-Montmorillonite at $65^{\circ}C$ in high vaccum, the experiments for the probability of forming its complexes with various swelling-solutions as dist, water, methanol, ethanol, acetonitrile, propionitrile, butyronitrile, toluene and n-decanol were performed, and the corresponding basal spacings obtained were 17.44$\AA$, 31.86$\AA$, 34.38$\AA$, 30.37$\AA$, 32.39$\AA$, 35.04$\AA$, 14.16$\AA$ and 14.63$\AA$ respectively.
The isolation and characterization of a new type II methylase, BmaI methylase, from Bacillus macerans ATCC 8244 were described. BmaI methylase was isolated by procedures of ammonium sulfate fractionation, DEAE-cellulose chromatography and phosphocellulose chromatography. Two types of methylases were present in this strain and only one of the two was a site specific BmaI methylase. The pBR322 DNA methylated by BmaI methylase was not cleaved by BmaI endonuclease, and pBR322 DNA cleaved by BmaI endonuclease was not methylated by BmaI methylase. The optimal pH for the BmaI methylase activity was 7.5, and optimal NaCl concentration was about 50 mM. BmaI methylase could methylate single-stranded M13mp18 DNA.
