In the our country, especially in Yeongil and Wolsung area, abundant authigenic zeolites are found from the tuffaceous sediments and volcanic rocks of Miocene age showing wide variation in their mineralogy and abundance from horizon to horizon. The principal zeolite species identified are clinopti-lolite. mordenite. heulandite. ferrierite, and erionite. etc. Zeolite minerals are widely used in many countries in the following applications; (a) in air separation adsorption processes; (b)as desiccants; (c)in inorganic building materials; (d)in papermaking; (e)in fertilizers; (f)as soilconditioners-this application is based upon the ability of the zeolite to ion exchange with soil nutrients; (g)in the treatment of radioactive wastes; and (h)as adsorbents for toxic gases, etc. In the present paper, using natural zeolite mordenite treated with IN hydrochloric acid or IN sodium chloride solution as column packings, separation characteristics of argon, nitrogen, carbon monoxide, and methane gases have been studied by gas chromatography. By the use of mordenite treated with hydrochloric acid solution, the tailing peak of methane showed from untreated mordenite was satisfactorily reduced, although it was difficult to separate it from carbon monoxide with a column activated at $300^{\circ}C$. Using a column activated at $350^{\circ}C$, methane could be separated from carbon monoxide easily but only carbon monoxide eluted as a bad defined peak. Mordenite treated with sodium chloride solution was generally similar to chromatograms obtained by using the untreated mordenite. Both the above chemical treatments of mordenite had little effect on the separations of argon and nitrogen. The separations and the HETP values obtained from natural zeolite mordenite treated with continuously hydrochloric acid and sodium chloride solutions were almost identical with those obtained with synthetic molecular sieve 5A zeolite. On the other hand, the efficiency of column was good in the range 20~3Oml/min of the carrier helium gas rate.

Supremo coffee was light and dark brewed and grinded using different beans sizes. We determined physicochemical properties of Supremo coffee in the form of moisture, crude fat, crude protein, and crude ash contents. Moisture content was higher in beans of the dark brew than the light brew. Carbohydrate content was lower in the dark brew. However, crude fat, crude protein, and crude ash contents were higher in the dark brew. pH level was higher in beans of the dark. L value (brightness) decreased in the dark brew. a value (red coloring) and b value (yellow coloring) were both increased in the light brew and decreased in the dark brew. Stronger brewing resulted in lower a and b values. The contents of Ca, Fe, K, Na, and P were measured, and the results showed that K content was the highest. Total dietary fiber content was significantly higher than all other brewing parameters. Soluble dietary fiber content was 4.25 g/100 g in the dark brew and week grinding while insoluble dietary fiber was 63.49 g/100 g in the light brew and week grinding, which was the highest. Fatty acid composition was not significantly different according to brewing and grinding conditions. Supremo coffee contained acetic acid, propionic acid, oxalic acid, citric acid, and fumaric acid. In particular, contents of acetic acid and fumaric acid were highest. These results suggest that physicochemical properties of Supremo coffee are affected by different brewing and grinding conditions.

Nanocrystallized glasses with the composition of $(50-x)BaO-xTiO_2-50SiO_2$ (x=10, 15, 16.7 and 20) have been prepared by heat-treatment at $T_x$ (crystallization onset temperature) for 3 h, and their optical properties, photoluminescence (PL), XRD and Raman spectra have been examined. The absorption edges of the glasses were red-shifted and the absorption coefficient increased with an increase of $TiO_2$. The glass subjected to the heat-treatment showed a dense formation of ${Ba_2}{TiSi_2}{O_8}$ crystals. The XRD and Raman results show that the nanocrystallized glasses formed fresnoite phase up to $TiO_2$ concentrations of 15 mol%. Further-more, blue luminescence with a peak at the wavelength of around 470nm was observed in the nanocrystallized glass, demon strating the optical multifunctional nanocrystallized material such as non-linear optics and photo-luminescence. It is thought that the blue luminescence from the ${Ba_2}{TiSi_2}{O_8}$ nanocrystallized glass originated from the presence of $Ti^{4+}$ incorporated into the fresnoite-type structure.

For development of food of Jong-ga (Jeonju Hakindang) and its commercialization, this study investigated physico-chemical properties and quality characteristics of Mannaji (boiled beef down in Korean soy sauce) prepared with conventional or pre-heating methods during storage period (0, 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 weeks) at $4^{\circ}C$. As storage period passed, pH decreased in both conventional and pre-heating methods. Forchromaticity, brightness ($L^*$) significantly decreasedwhile redness ($a^*$) and yellowness ($b^*$) significantly increased during storage period. After 4 weeks of storage, hardness of Mannaji with conventional methods was higher compared to before storage. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) of both conventional and pre-heating methods increased above 1.2 MDA mg/km, which is the acceptable criteria for intake. Although volatile basic nitrogen (VBN) values slightly increased in 4 weeks of storage, there were no significant differences in VBN and maintained food acceptable level until 20 weeks of storage. Sensory panelists showed preference for Mannaji with pre-heating methods compared to conventional methods.

Blanching beef for use in home meal replacements (HMR) is an important process that determines the final quality of the beef after the cooking process. Thermal pretreatment also minimizes the change in quality during the main cooking process or storage. In this study, beef samples were washed and sliced, then treated by immersion in boiling water (1-10 min), steaming (1-10 min), or pan-frying in oil (30-240 s). The color after each thermal treatment showed higher L* and b* values and lower a* values compared with the raw beef, except for the pan-frying thermal treatment. The total color difference (∆E) and pH value were significantly increased by panfrying (p<0.05). There was no significant difference in the shear force of the beef samples, except for the sample pan-fried for 210 s. The nutritional content of beef was measured as the moisture, protein, fat, and ash contents, which were 69.96, 16.64, 3.49, and 1.13%, respectively, in raw beef. After thermal treatment, the crude protein and fat contents were increased, whereas the moisture and ash contents decreased. The mineral content, including Na, Mg, Fe, and Ca was highest after pan-frying. The heat treatment decreased microorganisms in all the samples. The total bacteria count in raw beef was 4.5-4.7 Log CFU/g, whereas the bacteria count decreased to 2.2-2.8 Log CFU/g after blanching. Thermophilic bacteria, coliform, mold, and yeast not detected in any thermally treated sample.
In order to improve functionality of kochujang which is one of the traditional foods of Korea, sea tangle powder(2, 4, 6 and 8% sea tangle powder on the glutinous rice weight basis) was added to the raw material of kochujang and then investigated the change of physiochemical properties with control kochujang during the fermentation at 3$0^{\circ}C$ for 120 days. During 120 days fermentation, moisture and crude protein contents were gradually decreased with fermentation time, whereas crude fat content NaCl were slightly increased with fermentation time. The contents of reducing sugar of sea tangle kochujang was rapidly increased until 60 days of fermentation after that it was increased slightly up to 90 days of fermentation to the highest value and then reduced slightly or not changed approximately until 120 days. pH was reduced up to 60 days of fermentation after that it remained 4.63~4.91 in 90~120 days. Acidity was increased with fermentation time, and it was the highest value of 11.5~12.4$m\ell$ in 120 days of fermentation. Viscosity was increased with increased with fermentation time. Especially a case of additional sample of 8% sea tangle powder was highly increased until 60 days. A case of color difference value, in initial time of preparation of kochujang was distinct difference of value for additional samples respectively but as the fermentation progressed, among the samples not found consistent change of color difference value. L value was gradually decreased during fermentation. A value was decreased up to 30 days of fermentation and it was increased again totally at 60 days of fermentation. B value was decreased totally at initial time of fermentation and a case of control was increased again at 90 days of fermentation, the other samples increased again 60 days earlier than 30 days.

This study investigates fire-retardant performances and combustion/thermal characteristics of fire-retardant treated wood by comparing them with those of fire-retardant untreated wood from the expreimental resutls of cone calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric(TG) analyzer. Hazardousness of combustion product gases for fire-retardant treated wood and untreasted wood were also observed from the results of internal finish material incombustibility test according to the Korea standard code of KS F 2271. In this study, we also tried to improve the fire retardant performance of wood by applying fire-retardant chemical composites, and to secure the fire safety performance in buildings. Red pine (Pinus densiflora) was selected as a test specimen because it is mostly used as a building material in Korea. Fire retardant chemical composites (FRCs) were prepared by mixing boron, phosphorous, and nitrogen species and treated by press-impregnation method. Water-based FRCs were composed of 3% boric acid($H_3BO_3$), 3% borax decahydrate($Na_2B_4O_7$), 8% ammonium carbonate($(NH_4)_2CO_3$), diammonium phosphate ($(NH_4)_2HPO_4$) varied from 10-30% and potassium carbonate($K_2CO_3$) varied from 10-30%. From the test results of cone calorimeter, TG analysis and gas hazard assessments, newly proposed were the optimal composition and production methods of FRCs which can sufficiently meet fire-retardant level 3 based on Korea law of construction. Thus, the FRCs, developed in this study, are anticipated to contribute to the improvement of fire safety and widespread of usage in wood as building materials.
It is difficult to analyze pymetrozine in citrus fruits using the hydromatrix method because of its low efficiency of purification and overlap of matrix and pymetrozine peaks. Liquid-liquid extraction can analyze pymetrozine in citrus fruits using dichloromethane. Since low pH interferes with the extraction of pymetrozine, the extracts of citrus fruits were maintained over pH 7.0 by adding borax buffer and 1 N NaOH in the improved method. According to the improved method, citrus fruits (such as lemon, lime, orange, tangerine, and grapefruit) were extracted and purified for HPLC-photo diode array analysis. The results of validation were as follows: $4.360{\mu}g/kg$ of limit of detection, $14.533{\mu}g/kg$ of limit of quantitation, and 0.007 mg/kg of method quantitative limit. Citrus fruits spiked with pymetrozine showed a recovery range from 71.8 to 83.7% and a coefficient of variation below 6%. Thus, the improved method can efficiently analyze pymetrozine in citrus fruits.
With an emphasis on its thermal behavior with different pHs and salts, the kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of the purified polygalacturonase (PG) from E. carotovora subsp. carotovora (Ecc) BR1 were studied, as the characterization of an enzyme is significant in the context of burgeoning biotechnological applications. The thermodynamic parameters for polygalacturonic acid hydrolysis by the purified PG were ${\Delta}H^*$=7.98 kJ/mol, ${\Delta}G^*$=68.86 kJ/mol, ${\Delta}S^*$=-194.48 J/mol/K, ${\Delta}G_{E-S}$=-1.04 kJ/mol, and ${\Delta}G_{E-T}$=-8.96 kJ/mol. In addition, its turnover number ($k_{cat}$) was 21/sec. The purified PG was stable within a temperature range of $20-50^{\circ}C$ and was deactivated at $60^{\circ}C$ and $70^{\circ}C$. The thermodynamic parameters (${\Delta}H^*$, ${\Delta}G^*$, ${\Delta}S^*$) for the irreversible inactivation of the PG at different temperatures ($30-60^{\circ}C$) were determined, where the effectiveness of various salts and different pHs (4-8) for the thermal stability of the PG were also characterized. The efficacy of various salts for the thermal stability of the PG was in the following order: $MgCl_2$ > $BaCl_2$ > KCl > $CaCl_2$ >NaCl. Therefore, the present work presents the biochemical, substrate hydrolysis thermodynamics and the thermal stabilization parameters of the PG from Ecc.
This study examined the antimicrobial activity of Myagropsis yendoi (MY). The antimicrobial activity of ethanol and aqueous MY extracts were measured using a paper disc assay. The MY ethanol extract had the best antimicrobial activity. It inhibited the growth of Candida tropicalis and Gram-positive bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Listeria innocua, L. monocytogenes, and Staphylococcus aureus at 4 mg/mL. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of the MY ethanol extract ranged from 0.1 to 0.5%. The MY ethanol extract inhibited the growth of B. subtilis and L. innocuaat concentrations of 0.15% and 0.1%, respectively. The antimicrobial activity of the MY ethanol extract was not affected by heating at $121^{\circ}C$ for 15 min or pH 2.10. Therefore, the main substances responsible for the antimicrobial activity of the MY ethanol extract are believed to be stable with changing heat and pH.
