The behavior of Na-A type zeolite formed in hydrothermal synthesis of melting slag from municipal incineration ash has been investigated with varying synthesis time and $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio. Sodium silicate and sodium aluminate feed was found to initially form nuclei of Na-A type zeolite in the behavioral study of the reaction products with different synthesis times. As the synthesis time increased, the nuclei have grown to Na-A type zeolite crystals by reacting with $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ dissolved from the melting slag. The hydrothermal synthesis was completed in 10 hr in the $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio of 1.38 and after that time, the Na-A type zeolite formed was dissolved and transformed into hydroxysodalite. Only Na-A type zeolite was formed in the $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio ranging 0.80 to 1.96, whereas Na-P type zeolite as well as Na-A type was formed in the $SiO_2/Al2O_3$ ratio of 2.54.
The mechanism of hydrothermally synthesizing Na-A zeolite from siliceous mudstone at a $Na_2O/SiO_2$ ratio of 0.6, a $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ 2.0 and a $H_2O/Na_2O$ 119 has been observed by IR, DTA, XRD and SEM. This mudstone is a tertiary periodic sedimentary rock and widely spreads around the Pohang area. In the early hydrothermal synthesis at $80^{\circ}C$ in an autoclave, sodium silicate and sodium aluminate were found to be preferentially reacted to generate Na-A type zeolite. Gibbsite and bayerite were also formed due to the presence of extra aluminum oxide in the feedstock. As reaction time in-creased up to 50 h, residual sodium aluminatewas reacted with siliceous mudstone, causing the Na-A zeolite crystal to grow and the hydroxylsodalite to generate. Therefore, in the $14{\sim}50\;h$ synthetic time, Na-A zeolite and hydroxylsodalite were formed. Also, if reaction time passed over 50 h, a part of the Na-A zeolite was finally redissolved and reacted with hydroxylsodalite to synthesize Na-P zeolite, generating porous surface of Na-A zeolite and disappearing hydroxylsodalite.
A and 2SM-5 type zeoli tic crystal films were synthesized on porous supports from the reaction mixture of 1.9 ${SiO}_2$1.5 $Na_20-Al_2O_3-40$$H_20$ and $Si0_2$-0.l3 $Na_2O$-52 $H_20$-O.l2 TPAOH composition, respectively. The zeolite films were characterized by XRD and SEM. The 2SM -5 crystals grown on the porous matrix were very closely bound together. It was so difficult to obtain the perfectly intergrown crystals in the case of A-type zeolite and this crystal was transformed into P-type zeolite membrane with a prolonged reaction time. The densely intergrown A type zeolite crystal membrane could be also synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment at 100$^{\cirt}C$ after pressing the reaction mixture without addition of water. The pervaporation performance of the synthesized porous inorganic membranes was investigated for alcohol and water mixtures. A-type zeolite membrane crystallized as a thin film showed the selective \'Jermeability of water from the mixtures through the molecular sieving activity of micropores.
Smectites were synthesized from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolites by the hydrothermal synthetic method, and their physicochemical properties were studied. The optimal synthetic conditions for producing smectite were $290^{\circ}C$, 72 hr and $75{\sim}100kgf/cm^2$ in autogenous pressure. pHs of initial reaction solutions for the synthesis of smectites from Na-P type and Na-A type zeolite s were pH 6 and pH 10, respectively. The synthetic smectite was confirmed as $12{\AA}$-beidellite by a series of analysis such as X-ray diffraction analysis with random and oriented mounts, ethylene glycol treatment, and Greene-Kelly test, and their several physicochemical properties were studied.
The feasibility of commercializing the hydrothermal synthesis of Na-A type zeolite from siliceous mudstone has been conducted using a 50-liter bench-scale autoclave and the application of the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent. Siliceous mudstone, which is widely distributed around the Pohang area, was adopted as a precursor. The siliceous mudstone is favorable for the synthesis of zeolite because it contains 70.7% $SiO_2$ and 10.0% $Al_2O_3$, which are major ingredient of zeolite formation. The synthesis of zeolite was carried out under the following conditions that had been obtained from the previous laboratory-scale tests: 10hr reaction time, $80^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature, $Na_2O/SiO_2$ ratio = 0.6, $SiO_2/Al_2O_3$ ratio = 2.0 and $H_2O/Na_2O$ ratio= 98.6. The crystallinity and morphology of the zeolite formed were similar to those obtained from the laboratory-scale tests. The recovery and cation exchange ion capacity were 95% and 215 cmol/kg, respectively, which are slightly higher than those obtained in laboratory scale tests. To examine the feasibility of the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent, experiments for heavy metal adsorption to zeolite were conducted. Its removal efficiencies of heavy metals in simulated waste solutions decreased in the following sequences: Pb > Cd > Cu = Zn > Mn. In a solution of 1500 mg/L total impurity metals, the removal efficiencies for these impurity metals were near completion (> 99%) except for Mn whose efficiency was 98%. Therefore, the synthetic Na-A type zeolite was proven to be a strong absorbent effective for removing heavy metals.
This study was performed to synthesize Na-A type zeolite with melting slag from the Mapo incineration site and recycle the zeolite as an environmental remediation agent. The melting slag used had a favorable composition containing 26.6% $SiO_2$, 10.9% $Al_2O_3$ and 2.7% $Na_2O$ for zeolite synthesis although there were high contents of iron oxides, including 19.6% $Fe_2O_3$ and 18.9% FeO, which had been used as a flux for the melting. It was confirmed that the Na-A type zeolite could be successfully synthesized at $80^{\circ}C$ and $SiO_2/Al_2O_3\;=\;0.80{\sim}1.96$. The cation exchange capacities (CEC) of the zeolites was determined to be about 220 cmol/kg leveled off at the synthetic time more than 10hrs. The adsorption capacities of zeolite to heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Mn and Pb) were high except for As arid Cr. It was also confirmed through the Eh and pH analysis that As and Cr existed in the forms of $HAsO_4^{2-}$ and $CrO_4^{2-}$. The low absorption rates of zeolite for As and Cr are attributed to the fact that the pore size ($4\;{\AA}$) of Na-A type is smaller than those of $HAsO_4^{2-}$ and $CrO_4^{2-}$ ions ($4\;{\AA}$ ionic radii and $8\;{\AA}$ diameter).
Zeolite A have been known to be chemically, mechanically and thermally quite stable. The ion-exchanged membranes were tested for the removal of water from ethanol/water mixtures by pervaporation. Since it is quite difficult to prepare the potassium form of zeolite A by a direct synthesis, it was obtained by the ion-exchange method from NaA zeolite. The effects of concentration of ethanol at the feed side and the temperature were studied on the permeation flux and the separation factor of water. After $Na^+$ ion was exchanged to $K^+$ ion, it was found that the total flux decreased and the separation factor increased.

A and Y type zeolitic crystal films were synthesized on porous supports from the reaction mixture of 1.9 $SiO_2-1.5\;Na_2O-Al_2O_3-40\;H_2O$ and 10 $SiO_2-7\;Na_2O-Al_2O_3-280\;H_2O$ composition, respectively. The zeolite film was characterized by XRD and SEM. The crystals grown on the porous matrix were very closely bound together and the thickness of membrane was about 8-15$\mu \textrm{m}$. The densely intergrown crystals could be also synthesized by the hydrothermal treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ after pressing the reaction mixture without addition of water. A zeolite membrane crystallized as a thin film showed the selective permeability of water from water and methanol mixture through the molecular sieving activity of micropores.

Na-A zeolite were synthesized from melting slag of the incinerated ash by the alkaline activation processes. The experiments were performed in stainless steel vessels, with continuous stirring during the reaction periods. The silica-rich solution, a starting material, which was the waste of crystal growth factory, contains 5.7 wt% SiO₂ and 3.2 wt% Na₂O. And NaAlO₂ was made by the reaction of aluminium dross and NaOH solution and its molar ratios were Na₂O/Al₂O₃= 1.2 and H₂O/Na₂O=9. During the residence time of 7∼8 h at 80℃, the mixing of the silica-rich solution, NaAlO₂ and melting slag yields the production of homogeneous Na-A zeolite. The optimal reactant composition in molar ratio of Na₂O:Al₂O₃:SiO₂ was 1.3∼l.4 : 0.8∼0.9 : 2 and mixing ratio of solution and slag was 1/7∼10 (g/cc). Synthesized Na-A zeolite has cubic form uniformly and its size ranges about 1 ㎛. Ca/sup 2+/ ion exchange capacity of the Na-A was about 180∼210 meq/100g, corresponding approximately 80% to the commercial detergent builder.
The present work was attempted to improve the performance for the removal of water from ethanol/water mixtures through the ion-exchanged zeolite membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to either $K^{+}$ or $Ca^{2+}$ ion. The membranes were ion-exchanged with 0.5 mole/L aqueous solution of either KCl or $CaCl_2$ at $80^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs. In case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion was substituted to $K^{+}$ ion, the total flux was decreased from $900\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,500\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ to $600\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr{\sim}2,000\;g/m^2{\cdot}hr$ and the separation factor was increased from $600{\sim}2,200$ to $850{\sim}2,500$ compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. And in case of the ion-exchanged membrane in which $Na^{+}$ ion is substituted to $Ca^{2+}$ ion, both the total flux and selectivity of water showed the similar tendency compared to the NaA type zeolite membrane. It is thought that the improved separation would be possible if the pore size of the zeolite membrane is controlled by the ion exchange.
