Behavior characteristics of hydrogen and its isotope in molten salt of LiF-NaF-KF (FLiNaK)

  • Experimental studies to investigate the behaviors of hydrogen in molten FLiNaK (LiF-NaF-KF) have been conducted at $500-700^{\circ}C$. On the basis of previous studies, the diffusivity and solubility of hydrogen in FLiNaK have been revised, and the expressions can be correlated to the following Arrhenius equations: $D_{H2}=1.62{\times}10^{-5}{\exp}(-48.20{\times}10^3/Rg{\cdot}T) m^2/s]$ and $S_{H2}=1.03{\times}10^{-4}{\exp}(-14.96{\times}10^3/Rg{\cdot}T) [mol-H_2/m^3/Pa]$, respectively. The behavior characteristics of deuterium in FLiNaK were studied and compared with the hydrogen behaviors in FLiNaK. The results showed the behaviors of deuterium were consistence with the behaviors of hydrogen in FLiNaK. The difference between hydrogen and deuterium has not been observed upon the experimental research of the behavior characteristics of hydrogen and deuterium in FLiNaK, which suggested the results obtained here might apply equally to the behavior characteristics of tritium in FLiNaK.

  • $Na^{+}$는 체내에서 세포외액 (extracellular fluid)의 주요 양이온으로 세포내액과 세포외액은 세포막을 사이에 두고 $Na^{+}$$K^{+}$의 높은 농도의 차이를 유지하고 있다. 이러한 농도차이는 세포막에 있는 $Na^{+}$-K$^{+}$ATP ase의 활동에 의하여 유지되며 $Na^{+}$는 체액의 osmolarity와 혈장의 부피 유지, 신경흥분, 근육수축 및 영양소등의 이동에도 중요한 역할을 한다. 체내의 Na balance는 renin-aldosterone system에 의하여 신장에서의 배설조절로 이루어지며, 최근 Na대사에 관여하는 natriuretic hormone이 발견되고 있다. Na의 과잉섭취는 역학적 연구와 동물실험에서 고혈압의 유발인자로 제시되고 있으나, 임상적 연구에서는 Na제한이 혈압강하효과가 있다는 보고와 없다는 보고가 있어 결과가 뚜렷하지 않다. 이는 고혈압 환자중에는 salt-sensitive한 group자 salt-resistant group이 있다는 것과 산업화된 사회들의 Na 섭취량이 이미 너무 높은 수준으로 Na섭취증가와 혈압상승간의 관계를 현재의 연구 방법들로는 찾아내기 어렵다는 ‘saturation effect’로 설명한다. 그러나 Na섭취를 1일 70~100mEq.(NaCl 4.0~5.8g)이하로 줄이면 고혈압 발생이 현저히 감소하고 Na 섭취량이 1일 30mEq.(NaCl 1.7g)이하이면 고혈압은 거의 발생하지 않는다. 그러나 Na섭취가 1일 400mEq.(NaCl 23.2g)이상이 되더라도 인구 중 50~80%는 고혈압에 걸리지 않아 고혈압의 발생은 유전적 인자, 신장 기능의 부족에 의해 지배되고, Na이외에도 K, Ca등의 식이 인자 및 stress, 운동등의 환경적 요인들이 영향을 미친다. Na 섭취량은 자연식품에 들어있는 양 뿐 아니라, 가공과정, 조리가정, 식사 중에 첨가되는 양에 의하여 좌우되므로, Na 섭취량을 측정하기 매우 어렵다. 가장 널리 사용되는 방법은 24시간 소변 중 배설되는 Na의 양으로부터 추정하는 방법으로 우리나라의 경우, 이러한 방법으로 섭취량을 환산할 경우 1일 200~260mEq. (NaCl 11.6~15.1g) 정도이며 이중 80% 이상이 discretionary intake인 것으로 추정된다. 따라서 앞으로 Na섭취를 줄이도록 많은 노력을 기울여야 하겠다.

The Effects of Salt and $NaNO_2$ on Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Dry-cured Ham (소금과 아질산염 처리수준에 따른 건염햄의 이화학적 특성)

  • The aim of this work was to analyze the effects of salt and NaNO2 on weight loss, proximate compositions, chemical parameters and texture characteristics of dry-cured ham processed using Korean methods. Four different treatments were considered: The H8 group of 3 hams (11.30 kg) was salted with 9.2 g/kg salt (w/w) (high salt batch), the HS+NaNO2 group of 3 hams (10.65 kg) was salted same as HS group and added 100 ppm NaNO2. The LS group of 3 hams (11.42 kg) was salted with 6.2 g/kg salt (w/w) (Low salt batch), the LS+NaNO2 group of 3 hams (10.62 kg) was salted same as L8 group and added 100 ppm NaNO2. The highest weight losses took place at the drying stage (27.46, 28.25, 26.99, and 28.42%). However, there were no significant differences in the weight losses between treatments (p>0.05). The moisture content was significantly affected with addition of NaNO2 (p<0.05), the L8 hams had significantly higher moisture content than HS + NaNO2 and L8 + NaNO2 (p<0.05). The level of salt and NaNO2 did not affect the fat, protein and ash contents. The hardness and chewiness in biceps femoris muscle from L8 hams were significantly lower than in the muscles from HS + NaNO2 hams (p<0.05). The NaNO2 did not affect the texture characteristics of dry-cured hams. The processing conditions significantly affected the chemical parameters of biceps femoris muscle (p<0.05). The water activity in biceps femoris muscle from L8 hams was significantly higher than in muscles from HS and H8+NaNO2 hams (p<0.04). The salt content in biceps femoris muscles from LS + NaNO2 hams was significantly lower than in the muscles from HS and HS + NaNO2 hams (p<0.05). The NaNO2 treatment did not affect the NaNO2 content in biceps femoris muscles (p>0.05). The processing conditions did not significantly affect the lightness (L), redness (a), and $h^{\circ}$ of biceps femoris muscles (p>0.05). The yellowness (b) and chroma in biceps femoris muscle from HS + NaNO2 hams were significantly higher than in the muscles from HS and LS hams.

  • Vanadium is widely distributed in animal tissues and it is supposed to be a regulator of Na-K-ATPase activity. The effect of sodium orthovanadate on Na-K-ATPase activity in rabbit kidney was measured in vitro and compared with that of ouabain. The influence of sodium orthovanadate on the renal function of rabbits was also investigated. 1) Na-K-ATPase activity was decreased by sodium orthovandate at the concentrations of $10^{-7},\;10^{-6},\;10^{-5}\;and\;10^{-4}\;M$ to 73.89, 36.49, 6.50 and 4.99% of the control activity respectively. 2) Na-K-ATPase activity was decreased by ouabain at the concentrations of $10^{-4},\;10^{-3}\;and\;10^{-2}\;M$ to 69.52, 22.84 and 3.88% of the control activity respectively. 3) Urine volume, urinary excretion of $Na^+,\;K^+\;and\;Cl^-$, clearances of inulin and p-amino-hoppuric acid were decreased until after 60 minutes following the administration of sodium orthovanadate 0.5 mg/kg intravenously $Na^+\;reasorption$ rate was not changed and mean arterial pressure was significantly elevated during 60 minutes after the administration of sodium orthovanadate.

A Study on the Effect of Ginseng Saponin on Rat Intestinal Mucosal $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase (인삼 사포닌이 백서 장점막 $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase에 미치는 영향에 관한 연구)

  • We have studied the effect of ouabain, tool ginseng saponin, panax saponin C (protopanaxatriol derivative) and ginsenoside $Rb_{1}$ (protopanaxadiol derivative) on $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase and $Mg^{++}$-ATPase activities were determined by the method of Robinson and ATPase activities were determined by the method of King. The $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase activities were inhibitied by 90.1% and 51.1% respectively at the concentration of $10^{-3}M$ and $10^{-4}M$ ouabain. The results are consistent with those of Robinson. The $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase activities were increased by 14.3% and 10.0% respectively at the concentration of $10^{-4}$g/ml and $10^{-5}$g/ml total ginseng saponin. Panax saponin C obtained by the method of Han and ginsenoside $Rb_{1}$ obtained by the method of Shibata were used. The $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase activities were increased in the presence of panax saponin C and the increased activity with panax saponin C was greater than that with total ginseng saponin. On the other hand ginsenoside $Rb_{1}$ showed an inhibitory effect on $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase. Total ginseng saponin, panax saponin C and ginsenoside $Rb_{1}$ had no effect on $Mg^{++}$-ATPase. Therefore, it may be concluded that total ginseng saponin has dual effects on microsomal $Na^+,K^+$-ATPase, that is, panax saponin C exhibits stimulatory action, whereas ginsenoside $Rb_{1}$ shows inhibitory action.

Electrolyte Status and Fecal Consistency in Newborn Calves

  • In order to evaluate the change in plasma and fecal mineral content of calves to 6 days of age, and to clarify the relationship between electrolyte status and fecal consistency in calves at 6 days of age, data were collected from 52 Holstein calves. Fecal DM and Na of calves decreased at 6 days of age, but fecal Ca, P, Mg, K, Fe and Zn increased. Plasma Ca, inorganic P, Mg, Na, and Fe as well as blood hematocrit and hemoglobin of calves decreased at 6 days of age, but plasma alkaline phosphatase increased. Colostral Ca, P, Mg, Fe and Zn decreased with time postpartum, but colostral Na and K were not affected. The high plasma Na and K of calves at 6 days of age were influenced by the values at birth. There were negative correlations between fecal DM and fecal Na, and fecal K, of calves at 6 days of age, negative correlations between fecal DM and plasma Na, with plasma K. Plasma and fecal Na as well as plasma and fecal K of calves at 6 days of age were increased by the occurrence of diarrhea. These results suggest that the electrolyte status of calves at 6 days of age is adversely affected by the occurrence of diarrhea, and high plasma K and Na of calves at 6 days of age may be partly due to the electolyte status of calves at birth.

Influence of Inorganic Salts on Aqueous Solubilities of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons

  • Setschenow constants of six alkali and alkaline earth metal-based electrolytes (i.e., NaCl, KCl, CaCl$_2$, K$_2$SO$_4$, Na$_2$SO$_4$, NaClO$_4$) for three polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) (i.e., naphthalene, pyrene, and perylene) were investigated to evaluate the influence of a variety of inorganic salts on the aqueous solubility of PAHs. Inorganic salts showed a wide range of K$\_$s/ values (L/mol), ranging from 0.1108 (NaClO$_4$) to 0.6680 (Na$_2$SO$_4$) for naphthalene, 0.1071 (NaClO$_4$) to 0.7355 (Na$_2$SO$_4$) for pyrene, and 0.1526 (NaClO$_4$) to 0.8136 (Na$_2$SO$_4$) for perylene. In general, the salting out effect of metal cations decreased in the order of Ca$\^$2+/>Na$\^$+/>K$\^$+/. The effect of SO$_4$$\^$2-/>Cl$\^$-/>ClO4$\^$-/ was observed for anions of inorganic salts. The K$\_$s/ values decreased in the order of perylene>pyrene>naphthalene for K$_2$SO$_4$. However, the order of decreasing salting out effect for NaCl, KCl, CaCl$_2$, and NaClO$_4$ was perylene>naphthalene>pyrene. Hydration free energy of the 1:1 and 2:1 alkali and alkaline earth metal-based inorganic salts solution was observed to have a meaningful correlation with Setschenow constants. Thermodynamic interactions between PAH molecules and salt solution can be of importance in determining the magnitude of salting out effect for PAHs at a given salt solution.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the changes of chlorophyll contents and chlorophyll fluorescence in barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) 7 day old seedling treated with 0.2M, 0.4M, 0.6M, 0.8M, and 1.0M NaCI concentration containing Hepes buffer(pH 7.5). Barley was affected by NaCI treatment. The chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid of barley decreased with an increase in NaCI concentration. However, chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid of barley were not greatly influenced by o.8M and 1.0M NaCl. Fv, Fv/Fm and qP were gradually decreased by higher concentration of NaCI. qP, qNP, qR and qE were gradually decreased by 6hr. During barley chloroplast was development NaCI affected chlorophyll synthesis than photosynthetic activity. Whereas barley seedling leaves were more influenced photosynthetic activity than chlorophyll contents by NaCI.

  • Zeolite membranes show better thermal, mechanical, chemical stabilities than polymer membranes. Water was separated from water/ethanol mixtures by pervaporation using the NaA and the NaY zeolite membranes synthesized in our laboratory. The effects of concentration of ethanol at the feed side and temperature were studied on the permeation flux and separation factor of water. The separation factors obtained with the NaA zeolite membrane was found to be 1000 times higher than those obtained with the NaY. However, the water flux through the NaA zeolite membrane was observed to be lower than 1/2 of that through the NaY zeolite membrane.
