  • T-splines are recently proposed geometric modeling tools. A T-spline surface is a NURBS surface with T-junctions and is defined by a control grid called T-mesh. Local refinement can be performed very easily for T-splines while it is limited for B-splines or NURBS. Using T-splines, patches with unmatched boundaries can be combined easily without special technique. In this study, the analysis methodology using T-splines is proposed. In this methodology, T-splines are used both for description of geometries and for approximation of solution spaces. Two-dimensional linear elastic and dynamic problems will be solved by employing the proposed T-spline finite element method, and the effectiveness of the current analysis methodology will be verified.

  • This paper newly proposes a mesh regularization method for the enhancement of the efficiency in sheet metal forming analysis. The regularization method searches for distorted elements with appropriate searching criteria and constructs patches including the elements to be modified. Each patch is then extended to a three-dimensional surface in order to obtain the information of the continuous coordinates. In constructing the surface enclosing each patch, NURBS(Non-Uniform Rational B-Spline) surface is employed to describe a three-dimensional free surface. On the basis of the constructed surface, each node is properly arranged to form unit elements as close as to a square. The analysis results with the proposed method are compared to the results from the direct forming analysis without mesh regularization in order to confirm the validity of the method.

  • In the process of draw die design for stamping automotive press panels, the addendum surfaces generated in metal forming simulation software cannot be used in downstream processes such as machining and making draw dies because simulation tools use simple discrete models for the surface geometry. The downstream processes require more precise and continuous geometric models such as NURBS surfaces. Generally, automotive die engineers manually regenerate the addendum surface geometry using the discrete model. This paper presents an automated geometric modeling process for generating addendum surfaces using draft surface models. The design parameters of the section curve for the addendum surfaces are extracted automatically from the draft geometry. Using the extracted design parameters, smooth addendum surfaces are generated automatically as NURBS surfaces. The generated surfaces are $G^1$ continuous with the part surface and the binder surface, and can be used in downstream processes.

  • Free vibration analysis of thin shells is carried out by using isogeometric approach. For this purpose, a thin shell element based on Kirchhoff-Love shell theory is developed. Non-uniform rational B-spline surface (NURBS) definition is introduced to represent the geometry of shell and also used to derive all terms required in the isogeometric element formulation. Gauss integration rule is used for stiffness and mass matrices. The present shell element is then applied to examine vibrational behaviours of thin plate and shell structures. From numerical results, it is found be that reliable natural frequencies and associated mode shapes of thin shell structures can be predicted by the present isogeometric shell element.

  • An automatic quadrilateral mesh generator for large deformation finite element analysis such as metal forming simulation was developed. The NURBS interpolation method is used for modeling arbitrary 2-D free surface. This mesh generation technique is the modified paving algorithm, which is an advancing front technique with element-by-element resolving method for paving boundary intersection problem. The mesh density for higher analysis accuracy and less analysis time can be easily controlled with high-density points, maximum and minimum element size. A couple of application to large deformation finite element analysis is given as an example, which shows versatility and applicability of the proposed approach and the developed mesh generator for large deformation finite element analysis.

  • Many various products are manufactured which have sculptured surfaces recently. Constructing surface of these models is required technique called reverse engineering. In reverse engineering, a product which has sculptured surfaces is measured and we create surface model to acquire complete model data of object. Measured point data needs preprocess and sampling. Next a set of point data in a plane fit section curve. At last, surface is generated by fitting to section curves. Here we uses sweep surface. Sweep surface is compatible fitting CAD model to drawing. This paper discusses converting approximation of NURBS surface as a standard surface.

  • The Accuracy of a free-form artifact is affected by machine tool errors, machining process errors, environmental causes and other uncertainty. This paper deals with methodological approach about machine tool errors that are defined the relationship between CMM and OMM inspections of the free-form artifact. In order to analyze the measurement data, Reverse engineering was used. In other words, Surface of Free-Form Artifact is generated by NURBS surface approximation method. Finally, Volumetric error map is made to compare surface of CMM data with that of OMM data.

  • This paper presents a laser cutting of 2D image. 2D image in pixel graphic format is converted into vector graphic image by image processing. Bitmap graphics are made easily, but can not being used in application works for geometry transition. The Sobel's Edge detection method is used to find boundary points on 2D image. The points are fitted into curves with sampling and filtering. Sampling can provide efficient computation and filtering reconstuct features in image. The NC code is generated on MURBS curve of the points. Also, the offset of contour and cutting conditions are considered.

  • A plate element is developed by using isogeometric approach in order to determine natural frequencies of laminated composite plates. Reissner-Mindlin (RM) assumptions is adopted to consider the shear deformation and rotatory inertia effect. All terms required in isogeometric element formulation are consistently derived by using Non-uniform rational B-spline surface (NURBS) definition. Gauss quadrature rule is used to form the element stiffness matrix and separately Lobatto quadrature rule is used to calculate element mass matrix. The capability of the present plate element is demonstrated by using numerical examples. From numerical tests, the present isogeometric element produces reliable numerical results for both thin and thick plate situations.

  • Approximate lofting or skinning is one of practical surface modeling techniques well used in CAD and reverse engineering applications. Presented in this paper is a method for approximately lofting a given set of curves wihin a specified tolereance. It is based on refitting input curves simultaneously on a common knot vector and interpolating them to get a resultant NURBS surface. A concept of reducing the number of interior knots of the common knot vector is well adopted to acquire more compact representation for the resultant surface. Energy minimization is newly introduced in curve refitting process to stabilize the solution of the fitting problem and get more fair curve. The proposed approximate lofting provides more smooth surface models and realizes more efficient data reduction expecially when the parameterization and compatibility of input curves are not good enough. The method has been successfully implemented in a new CAD/CAM product VX Vision? of Varimetrix Corporation.
