  • Water analyses were conducted on 1,525 underground water laid in the western district of Korea's South Gyeongsang Province, from January 2007 until July 2010, according to sections, factors, fountainheads and inter-factor correlativities. The following are the results. 1. As a result of local incongruity rate, 18.2% in inland areas, coastal areas and 24.5% showed a high value comparatively. Costal areas showed high incongruity rate. 2. As a result of local incongruity rate, they were found that the total colony count and general bactria 39.9%, 42.6% showed a high in costal areas. 3. As a result of local factorial inspection, it was found that the turbidity content counted up to 0 to 0.2 NTU in 59.4% in inland areas, 60.2% in costal areas of sections, and in other 12.6%, 14.0%, it exceeded 0.5 NTU. As a result of local factorial inspection, it was found that the nitrate-nitrogen content counted up to 0 to 10 mg/L in 98.2% in inland areas, 97.6% in costal areas of sections, and in other 1.8%, 2.4%, it exceeded 10 mg/L. As regards chloride in coastal areas, water quality standards for chloride 250 mg/L exceeds the 1.4% higher then in inland areas. 4. Hardness in inland areas was closely correlated with total solids (r = 0.910), sulfate ion (r = 0.819). Also, total solids and boron (r = 0.600) showed high correlativities. On the other hand hardness in coastal areas was closely correlated with total solids (r = 0.919), chloride (r = 0.829). Also sulfate ion was closely correlated with hardness (r = 0.599), turbidity and aluminum (r = 0.635) showed high correlativities in this research.

  • The Ministry of Environment (MOE) has made more effort in managing point source pollution rather than in nonpoint source pollution in order to improve water quality of the four major rivers. However, it would be difficult to meet water quality targets solely by managing the point source pollution. As a result of the comprehensive measures established in 2004 under the leadership of the Prime Minister's Office, a variety of policies such as the designation of control areas to manage nonpoint source pollution are now in place. Various action plans to manage nonpoint source pollution have been implemented in the Soyang-dam watershed as one of the control areas designed in 2007. However, there are no tools to comprehensively assess the effectiveness of the action plans. Therefore, this study would assess the action plans (especially, BMPs) designed to manage Soyang-dam watershed with the WinHSPF and the CE-QUAL-W2. To this end, we simulated the rainfall-runoff and the water quality (SS) of the watershed and the reservoir after conducting model calibration and the model validation. As the results of the calibration for the WinHSPF, the determination coefficient ($R^2$) for the flow (Q, $m^3/s$) was 0.87 and the $R^2$ for the SS was 0.78. As the results of the validation, the former was 0.78 and the latter was 0.67. The results seem to be acceptable. Similarly, the calibration results of the CE-QUAL-W2 showed that the RMSE for the water level was 1.08 and the RMSE for the SS was 1.11. The validation results(RMSE) of the water level was 1.86 and the SS was 1.86. Based on the daily simulation results, the water quality target (turbidity 50 NTU) was not exceeded for 2009~2011, as results of maximum turbidity in '09, '10, and '11 were 3.1, 2.5, 5.6 NTU, respectively. The maximum turbidity in the years with the maximum, the minimum, and the average of yearly precipitation (1982~2011) were 15.5, 7.8, and 9.0, respectively, and therefore the water quality target was satisfied. It was discharged high turbidity at Inbuk, Gaa, Naerin, Gwidun, Woogak, Jeongja watershed resulting of the maximum turbidity by sub-basins in 3years(2009~2011). The results indicated that the water quality target for the nonpoint source pollution management should be changed and management area should be adjusted and reduced.

  • This study was surveyed that water physiochemical characteristics and phytoplankton incidence of main stream and Lake Doam near to Daegwallyeong agricultural area. Based on above results, it was conducted to get information overall water characteristics in south Han upstream river. COD value of Lake Doam was $6.1mg\;L^{-1}$ and T-P (Total phosphorous) from there was $0.26mg\;L^{-1}$ which was higher than the value of grade VI based on lake water living environment standard. Suspended solid was an average of 9.77 NTU which was higher than value of lake living standard. Concentration of phytoplankton was over $2.0{\times}10^3Cell\;mL^{-1}$ from July to September. It was considered that cyanobacteria were occurred due to massive influx of nutrient material by high temperature and rainfall during this season. Compare to Ontario's sediment quality guidelines, T-N and T-P was middle value between LEL and SEL in Lake Doam. This value means that contamination in water is serious. Therefore, it is considered that systematic management was needed to reduce and block contamination source.

  • The purpose of the study is to find ways to decrease turbidity and residual aluminum by improving the efficiency of coagulation process through controlling the pH of the source water with $CO_2$ when the pH increases by algal bloom or by the characteristics of the source water. Water quality parameters were monitored before and after $CO_2$ addition in February, March, April, and December, when the pH of the source water is over 8.0 and constant regardless of day and night. Water quality parameters closely related with evaluation of treated drinking water quality were monitored in detail, e.g. aluminum, turbidity, particle counts, TOC, THMs, 2-MIB, and geosmin. According to the results, inorganic water quality parameters such as turbidity, particle counts, and aluminum were decreased due to improved efficiency of the coagulation process. It was concluded that the pH of the water in the arrival basin must be controlled below 7.4 by adding $CO_2$ when the pH of the source water increasing. By controlling pH with $CO_2$, the water quality could be maintained within the drinking water quality goal of Seoul City (<30 particle/mL of particle count, <0.05 NTU of turbidity and <0.02 mg/L of aluminum). The change of the pH could not affect the concentrations of DBP's (e.g., THMs, CH, and HAAs) and taste/odor causing compounds (e.g., 2-MIB and geosmin). 2-MIB and geosmin were affected more by their initial concentrations in the source water.

  • This study has been conducted to assess blackish-water phenomena in Dam reservoir. To searching for the reason, we survey physical changes in reservoir and analyze metal and organic content in particulate materials and water. The blackish-water phenomena in lake A are occurred with turbidity increases in turnover season irregularly. It was reported on 6 Jan. 2005 weakly and the water column mixed with 35~40m depth and water temperature shows $7^{\circ}C$. The turbidity of AD and AM site increased up to 20NTU. Especially, AN site shows 27NTU, such a result makes that Dam manager conclude it to blackish-water phenomena. The results of sequential extraction analysis show that over 80% of Al, Cr and Fe is existed in residual form in sediment. On the other hand, the most part of Mn shows exchangeable and carbonates form, which have a good possibility of release to water column. Mn contents in pore waters of the sediment samples are also found to be ~4 times higher than Fe contents. The metal contents in pore water of different dam sites are in order of AN (Fe: 9.98, Mn: 40.6) > AD(8.33, 37.5) > DD(1.91, 2.55). According to the results of extracted organic materials from sediment, humic substances is occupied with over 85% in total organic carbon including 23~45% of humic acid (HA) and 0.9~8.5% of fulvic acid (FA). However, HA content in pore water is not detectable while FA contents, acid-soluble humic fractions is higher than that of sediment(10~15%). which indicating that FA is a main humic components affecting water color. The color unit per DOC of FA in pore waters of different dam sites are found to be higher in lake A than lake D. From the results, it could be suggested that blackish-water phenomena of lake A are mainly arise from higher concentration of Mn and water soluble organic fractions (e.g., FA) released from sediments as well as the strength of turnover in Dam reservoir.

  • Although the detected amounts of those disease-causing(oo)cysts were high at each point in 2001, the detected amounts of Cryptosporidium and Giardia had decreased at low levels below 10(oo)cysts until 2004. Considered the detection results of each season, the most highly detected amounts of(oo)cysts were mostly recorded in summer and late summer(from June to September), while the site which the biggest amount was detected, was the point at Goryeung. The relation of Cryptosporidium with the water quality items was low, but the relations of Cryptosporidium and Giardia with turbidity were high($R^2$=0.4914, $R^2$=0.6176 respectively). And the detected amounts of Cryptosporidium and Giardia were relatively high, 20(oo)cysts/20L when the turbidity was more than 20 NTU. It was also found that the relation between the distribution of Cryptosporidium and Giardia was high, $R^2$=0.8432 and the density of Giardia was generally higher than that of Cryptosporidium. And Cryptosporidium and Giardia were simultaneously detected at each point. The primary sources that affected the density of those(oo)cysts were the livestock waste water and sewage.

  • In this study, we investigated the possibility of the elimination of suspended solid and the factors affecting effluent water quality, and the amount of treated water, using the SS removal equipment adapted capillary-syphon phenomenon. Treated water quantity decreased as the accumulation time and the increase of head of capillary syphon, whereas the effluent water quality was improved. At coagulant dosage 0, 0.45, $1.82mg/{\ell}$ (as $Al^{+3}$) and limiting flux $107{\ell}/m/day$. turbidity of treated water was 2, 1, 0.5 NTU in each case. During operating period 15~17 days, the amount of washing water was just used 0.5~0.7% of the amount of treating water. So it is expected that coagulation & sedimentation and rapid filtration process can be replaced with the SS removal equipment adapted capillary-syphon phenomenon in water purification process.

  • This study intended to understand movements of turbid water in selective with drawal reservoirs before and after summer monsoon. Mean rainfall during November-May was low, compared to that during June-October. The reservoir water was discharged through watergates when previous rainfall and inflow exceeded 50 mm and $80\;m^3s^{-1}$, respectively. Intake towers were generally used except for the period of the high runoff. Average turbidity in gown-reservoir showed a difference of 29.9 NTU between premonsoon and postmonsoon. Diameter of particles of turbid water ranged between 0.435 and $482.9\;{\mu}m$. Fine particles such as clay were much denser than the larger particle. In the whole stations, clay component was relatively higher with a proportion of that in the particle distribution. Particle composition of turbid water showed that clay consisted of 94.4-98.9% and silt made of 1.1-5.6%. Analysis on turbid water movements derived from particle distribution showed a linear increase from the deep layer toward the surface layer in lower area of a reservoir. This was closely related with the hydraulic behavior of the reservoir, and heavily affected by the discharges through selective withdrawal towers and watergates. Turbid water originated from stream sediments in the middle area then resuspended in the down-reservoir causing a movement between the surface and middle layers of the reservoir. Therefore, such phenomenon needs to be understood for reservoir water quality management.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate water quality through a field survey at six floor fountain sites. The floor fountain facilities were designed and operated in such a way that tap water was stored in a water tank and recycled repeatedly. The water tank was cleaned once or twice per week in the summer. The number of facility users was low during the day due to sweltering heat, but up to 40 people, mainly children, were using them around 8 pm. Since the operation time was as short as 30 minutes, it is considered necessary to extend it for at least one hour for the number of users. As a result of the water quality test of the reservoir tank prior to operation after cleaning, it was measured to be within drinking water quality standards at the six facilities. As a result of the water quality test after use, ammonia nitrogen was measured to be 1.45 mg/L at Site IV. This exceeded the drinking water quality standard of 0.5 mg/L. In the case of turbidity, two cases exceed at 7.38 and 4.52 NTU when applying 4 NTU as the water quality standard for waterscape facilities. Twenty-eight cases exceed the standard of drinking water quality. The result of microbiological tests, at five sites excepting Site I, where disinfectant was injected, was that the maximum total colony count was 180,000 CFU/mL, total coliforms was 2,100,000 CFU/100 mL, fecal coliforms was 4,600 CFU/100 mL, Escherichia coli was 170 MPN/100 mL and Enterococcus was 100 CFU/100 mL. This exceeded the water quality standards of drinking water. Children are very likely to inhale because the water spews from below and falls from above, so it is necessary to apply water quality standards for ammonia nitrogen, turbidity and microbes. Current floor fountain facilities are highly susceptible to disease caused by microbial contamination because of water cycling and reuse, so it is necessary to change the water every day, clean the water tank, and perform chlorination. Therefore, it is necessary to inject calcium hypochlorite according to the free chlorine water quality standard of swimming pools with a different water tank capacity. In addition, facilities should be improved to prevent the reuse of water by installing the water tank at a separate location.
