Effect of heat treatment and sintered microstructure on electrical properties of Mn-Co-Ni oxide NTC thermistor for fuel level sensor (연료액위센서용 Mn-Co-Ni 산화물계 서미스터의 전기적 특성에 미치는 열처리 및 소결미세구조에 관한 연구)

  • The correlationship between heat treatment condition and electrical properties of the Mn-Co-Ni oxide NTC thermistor for fuel level sensor was investigated by the X-ray diffractometry, density measurement, and electrical properties measurement such as resistivity, B constant, and thermal dissipation constant. It was shown that the heat treatment of NTC thermistor was responsible for sinterability of Mn-Co-Ni oxide. The highest density of 5.10 g/㎤ was obtained at $1250^{\circ}C$, 2 hours, at which the densification was almost completed. This is also manifested from the microstructural observation. It is found that the electrical resistivity and B constant are increased at the elevated sintering temperatures. The NTC specimens prepared in this study showed the conventional decrease of resistance with the measured temperature and the linear behavior of output voltage with fuel levels. Therefore, the electrical properties of thermistor were closely correlated with sintering condition. and the Mn-Co-Ni oxide thermistor prepared in this study has a great possibility enough to apply for an automobile fuel level sensor.

  • 본 연구에서는 제한된 온도 영역에서 보통 정밀 온도 측정 소자로 많이 쓰이는 NTC 써미스터를 사용하여 전압 분배 회로(voltage divider circuits)를 구성하였다. 분압 저항이 온도측정 해상도에 미치는 영향을 분석하고, 회로의 분압 저항을 결정하는 방법으로서 측정하고자 하는 온도 구간의 최대 온도와 최저 온도의 NTC 써미스터 저항 값을 조화평균을 사용하여 분압 저항(divider resistance)으로 사용하였다. 선택한 분압 저항이 이상적인 저항인지에 대하여 조화평균으로 계산한 분압 저항과 대조군 저항으로 전압 분배 회로를 병렬로 구성하였다. 센서들을 항온조 넣어 설정온도($50^{\circ}C$, $70^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$)에서 각각의 온도를 측정한 후 측정 데이터의 표준편차를 구하여 평균 온도 분해능을 비교 하는 실험을 하였다. 실험결과 측정온도 구간의 최대 온도와 최소 온도에서의 NTC 써미스터 저항 값을 조화평균으로 계산한 분압 저항 값이 대조군 저항에 비해 설정온도에서 보다 높은 평균 온도 분해능(sensing resolution)을 보였다.

  • 써미스터(THERMLISTOR)는 Thermally Sensitive Resistor의 약칭으로 온도변화에 대한 저항치의 변화가 극히 크게 변화하는 특징을 갖는 감온반도체이다. 이중에는 부특성 또는 NTC(Negative Temperature Coeffient) THERMISTOR와 정특성 또는 PTC(Positive Temperature Coeffient)THERMISTOR의 두종류와 NTC와 동일한 부의 온도계수이지만 어떤 온도영역에서 저항치가 급격히 감소하는 CTR로 분류한다. 이렇게 3가지 종류로 분류되는 THERMISTOR중 우리주변에서 가장 널리 보급되고 가정생활에서 실제로 흔히 볼수 있는 가전기기의 온도검출용 sensor로 많이 사용되고 있는 THERMISTOR SENSOR에 대해서만 기초지식을 알아보기로 하고 다음기회에는 응용기술에 대해서 알아보기로 하겠다.

  • Mn-Co-Ni-O계를 적용한 적층 칩 NTC 써미스터의 소성온도 및 냉각 조건에 따른 전기적 특성을 연구하였다. 특히, 소결조건에 따른 저항, B-정수의 경시 변화 특성으로부터 제품의 신뢰성 측면을 검토하였다. 소결온도 및 시간에 의한 영향보다는 냉각속도에 따른 초기 저항 및 B-정수의 변화가 크게 나타났으며 냉각속도를 조절한 시편에서 경시변화율은 1%이하인 특성을 얻을 수 있었다.

  • NTC thermistor embedded miniature thermoelectric module was fabricated for the precise temperature control of optical communication device such as laser diode (LD). The miniature thermoelectric module ($7.2 mm{\times}9 mm{\times}2.2 mm$) consists of 21 BiTe thermoelectric couples, the operating temperature is precisely controlled by embedded thermistor with quick response. The figure-of-merit (Z), maximum temperature difference (${\Delta}T_{max}$), maximum cooling capacity ($Q_{max}$) of the miniature thermoelectric module were $2.5{\times}10^{-3}$/K, 72 K, 2.2 W respectively and temperature could be controlled in range of ${\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$ accuracy in air. The fabricated miniature thermoelectric module is suitable for applications of the optical communication packaging.

  • Interface effects on properties of NTC thermistors having Mn-Co-O spinel crystal structure system are analyzed by a mixing rule in case of mixed types and layered types between CuO and Al$_2$O$_3$ added compounds. With adding CuO and Al$_2$O$_3$, The compounds form completely solid solution and their resistance and B constant are changed due to the variation of conduction electrons by their ionic substitutions. The properties of mixed NTC thermistors are depended on the logarithmic mixing rule by a dispersed phase and they show slightly lower values due to the lattice mixing affect in compared with calculated values. The resistance of layered NTC thermistors is depended upon the series mixing rule containing the value of an interface layer and effected by the variation of its thickness, and it is changed rapidly to the logarithmic mixing rule by the connection between two layers with increasing the interface layer

  • Oxides of the form $Mn_{3}O_4$-$Co_{3}O_4$-NiO present properties that make them useful as multilayer chip NTC thermistor for mobile communication telephone. When $Mn_{2}Ni_{x}CO_{1-x}O_4$ composition with the X = 0.12$\sim$0.24 at sintered temperature 1250$^{\circ}C$, resistivity and B-constant were 300$\sim$450[${\Omega}-cm$] and 3250$\sim$3450, respectively. Multilayer chip NTC(Negative Temperature Coefficient) resistor were fabricated with 4 layer by a conventional multilayer capacitor techniques, using 100 pd paste as internal electrode and $Mn_{2}Ni_{0.20}CO_{0.8}O_4$ composition as NTC materials. In particular, resistance change ratio (${\Delta}R$), the important factor for reliability, varied within $\pm$3%, indicating the compositions of multilayer chip NTC thermistor products could be available for mobile communication telephone.

In $Mn_{3}O_{4}-NiO-Fe_{2}O_{3}$ composition, it can be seen that resistivity and B-constant were increased as the ratio of $Mn_{3}O_{4}/F_{2}O_{3}$ and $Mn_{3}O_{4}$/NiO was increased. In particular, resistance change ratio (${\Delta}R$), the important factor for reliability varied within ${\pm}1%$, indicating the compositions of these products could be available for mobile phone.

  • For improvement of B constant in $CaMnO_3$-$CaTiO_3$ perovskite type thermistors, effect of $Cr_2$$O_3$ addition ranged from 0.0wt% to 5.0wt% on electrical properties were investigated with contents and sintering temperatures in the view of crystal and microstructures. The solubility limit of Cr$_2$O$_3$was up to 0.5wt% judging from the result of lattice parameter. The grain size was decreased and the resistance at room temperature and B constant were increased with the addition of $Cr_2$$O_3$.On particular, B constant of$CaMnO_{3-x}$$Cr_2$$O_3$ system was increased greatly from 1574k to 2598k at 0.5wt% $Cr_2$$O_3$addition. Further addition of $Cr_2$$O_3$, however, resulted in the decrease of the resistance and B constant due to the $Cr_2$$O_3$ precipitation on the grain boundary. As the$CaTiO_3$contents increased in the $CaMnO_3$-$CaTiO_3$ system, the resistance at room temperature and B constant were highly changed.
