BACKGROUND: Soil carbon sequestration has been investigated for a long time because of its potential to mitigate the greenhouse effect. No- or reduced tillage, crop rotations, or cover crops have been investigated and practiced to sequester carbon in soils but the roles of soil biota, particularly microorganisms, have been mostly ignored although they affect the amount and stability of soil organic matters. METHODS AND RESULTS: In this study we analyzed the organic matter and microbial community in organically cultivated corn field soils where no-tillage (NT) or conventional tillage (CT) had been practiced for about three years. The amounts of organic matter and recalcitrant carbon pool were 18.3 g/kg dry soil and 4.1 g C/kg dry soil, respectively in NT soils, while they were 12.4 and 2.5, respectively in CT soils. The amounts of RNA and DNA, and the copy numbers of bacterial 16S rRNA genes and fungal ITS sequences were higher in NT soils than in CT soils. No-tillage treatment increased the diversities of soil bacterial and fungal communities and clearly shifted the bacterial and fungal community structures. In NT soils the relative abundances of bacterial phyla known as copiotrophs, Betaproteobacteria and Bacteroidetes, increased while those known as oligotrophs, Acidobacteria and Verrucomicrobia, decreased compared to CT soils. The relative abundance of a fungal phylum, Glomeromycota, whose members are known as arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, was about two time higher in NT soils than in CT soils, suggesting that the higher amount of organic matter in NT soils is related to its abundance. CONCLUSION: This study shows that no-tillage treatment greatly affects soil microbial abundance and community structure, which may affect the amount and stability of soil organic matter.

Botulinum toxin type A (BoNT-A) is used for treating bilateral masseter hypertrophy since 1994. Recently there have been more clinical studies in this area, with some authors reporting that BoNT-A can reduce the size of the masseter muscle, as documented by photography, ultrasonography, computed tomography, and 3D(three dimensional) laser scan. However, earlier studies were only for bilateral masseter hypertrophy cases, not for unilateral masseter hypertrophy cases. The aim of this study was to use 3D laser scanning to evaluate changes in the external facial contour induced by unilateral BoNT-A injection. BoNT-A was injected into hypertrophic masseter muscle unilaterally in 10 patients with asymmetric masseter hypertrophy. The clinical effects of unilaterally injected BoNT-A were evaluated before the injection and 4, 8, and 12weeks after the injection using 3D laser scan. And the mean values of both sides (injection and non-injection sides) were compared with. At injection side, mean values of the volume and the bulkiest height at each time point diminished significantly between pre-injection and 4, 8, and 12weeks post-injection. At non-injection side, in contrast, mean values of the volume and the bulkiest height diminished also but less than that of injected side, and there was no statistical significance. In this limited study, we concluded that the unilaterally BoNT-A injection side showed greater mean values of the reduction of muscle volume than non-injection side at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after the injection.

No-tillage is an effective practice to save labor input and reduce methane emission from the paddy. Effects of tillage and cultivation methods on carbon accumulation and soil properties were investigated in the treatments of tillage-transplanting (T-T), tillage-wet hill seeding (T-WS), minimum tillage-dry seeding (MT-S) and no-tillage dry seeding (NT-S) of rice. Soil carbon was higher in NT-S and MT-S, compared to T-T and T-WS. In NT-S and MT-S, soil carbon contents were the highest in the top soil (5 cm depth) and decreased with soil depth. In T-T and T-WS, however soil carbon contents showed no significant difference up to soil depth of 15 cm from the top. Carbon content was the highest in the soil particle size under $106{\mu}m$ and decreased as the soil particle size increased. Contents of water-stable aggregates in NT-S and MT-S were higher than those of T-T and T-WS. In NT-S and MT-S, contents of water-stable aggregates were the highest in the top soil and significantly decreased with soil depth while no significant difference up to the soil depth of 15 cm in T-T and T-WS. Available $SiO_2$ contents in the top soil were the highest in NT-S and MT-S while the lowest in T-T and T-WS. It is concluded that minimum or no disturbance of soil in rice cultivation can increase carbon accumulation in the soil, especially in the top layer, and subsequently contribute to the formation of the water-stable soil aggregates.

Background: Chromogranin A (CgA) levels have been reported to predict mortality in patients with heart failure. However, information on the prognostic value and clinical availability of CgA is limited. We compared the prognostic value of CgA to that of previously proven natriuretic peptide biomarkers in patients with acute heart failure. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 272 patients (mean age, 68.5±15.6 years; 62.9% male) who underwent CgA test in the acute stage of heart failure hospitalization between June 2017 and June 2018. The median follow-up period was 348 days. Prognosis was assessed using the composite events of 1-year death and heart failure hospitalization. Results: In-hospital mortality rate during index admission was 7.0% (n=19). During the 1-year follow-up, a composite event rate was observed in 12.1% (n=33) of the patients. The areas under the receiver-operating characteristic curves for predicting 1-year adverse events were 0.737 and 0.697 for N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) and CgA, respectively. During follow-up, patients with high CgA levels (>158 pmol/L) had worse outcomes than those with low CgA levels (≤158 pmol/L) (85.2% vs. 58.6%, p<0.001). When stratifying the patients into four subgroups based on CgA and NT-proBNP levels, patients with high NT-proBNP and high CgA had the worst outcome. CgA had an incremental prognostic value when added to the combination of NT-proBNP and clinically relevant risk factors. Conclusion: The prognostic power of CgA was comparable to that of NT-proBNP in patients with acute heart failure. The combination of CgA and NT-proBNP can improve prognosis prediction in these patients.

Mycotoxin contamination in pig feeds has a negative impact on growth performance, the immune system, and major body organs. Arginine (Arg) plays an important role in animals' body biochemistry and physiology. This study aimed to determine the effect of dietary Arg supplementation on mitigating the negative effects of mycotoxins in growing pigs. A total of 72 growing pigs (Landrace × Large white) with initial mean body weight (BW) = 55 ± 2.5 kg were allotted to four treatment groups with three replicates per group of six pigs per replicate in a completely randomized design. The treatments included a non-toxin diet with 1.2% Arg (NT1.2) and mycotoxin-challenged treatments supplemented with 1.2% Arg (TX1.2), 1.3% Arg (TX1.3), and 1.4% Arg (TX1.4). Statistical analysis of data included the effects of dietary level of Arg. The results indicated a significantly higher BW (p < 0.05), average daily gain (p < 0.05), and gain-to-feed ratio (p < 0.05) in the NT1.2 group than in the TX1.2, TX1.3, and TX1.4 groups. The relative weight of the liver was higher (p < 0.05) in the TX1.2 compared to that of the NT1.2 group, although it was not different from that of TX1.3 and TX1.4. The level of tumor necrosis factor-alpha was significantly up-regulated (p < 0.05) in the liver tissue of the TX1.2 group compared to that of the other treatments. Overall, dietary Arg supplementation remedied liver injury and alleviated the compromised immune system caused by mycotoxin toxicity.

To perform high-strength of concrete, fine powers of pozzolan such as fly ash, silica fume mixed with cement. But mobility of cement and concrete decreased due to using of these powers. To control decrease of this mobility, it is required that mobility is improved by using of chemical admixture such as superplasticizer. We used admixtures -NSF, NM-2, NT-2 etc- in order to improve mobility of cement paste being substituted by 10, 20% of pozzolans respectively. It proved that optimum dosage of NSF, NT-2 was 2.0% for being substituted 10%, 3.0% for 20% so as to increase mobility of cement paste mixed paste mixed with fine powers of pozzolan at W/C=0.40.

Arabidopsis nucleoside diphosphate kinase 2 (AtNDPK2) is an upstream signaling molecule that has been shown to induce stress tolerance in plants. In this study, the AtNDPK2 gene, under the control of a stress-inducible SWPA2 promoter, was introduced into the genome of tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) plants. The induction of the transgene expression mediated by methyl viologen (MV) and NaCl treatments were confirmed by RT-PCR and northern blot analysis, respectively. Under salt stress treatment, the transgenic tall fescue plants (SN) exhibited lower level of $H_2O_2$ and lipid peroxidation accumulations than the non-transgenic (NT) plants. The transgenic tall fescue plants also showed higher level of NDPK enzyme activity compared to NT plants. The SN plants were survived at 300 mM NaCl treatment, whereas the NT plants were severely affected. These results indicate that stress-inducible overexpression of AtNDPK2 might efficiently confer the salt stress tolerance in tall fescue plants.
To characterize expression and formation of three type crystal proteins in transformant, Bacillus thruingiensis PT0529 was analysed by transmission electron microscope and SDS-PAGE according to growth. The results showed that the introduced crystal protein genes, rcyIVD and cytA, were well expressed at earlier stage than resident crystal proteins were also expressed with their own morphology. However, resident crystal protein of B. thuringiensis PT0529 was smaller than that of wild type B. thuringiensis NT0423, suggesting that resident crystal protein production was interfered with introduced two type crystal protein genes.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the dietary behavior and food preference based on the personality types of the high school students in Gyeongju. According to the survey on the personality types of the students, the type of SP(Sensing-perceiving) occupied the highest ratio, 46% and NF(Intuition-Feeling) 8.6% and NT(Intuition-Thinking) 8.2% and SJ(Sensing-Judging) 7.1%. The difference between the ratio of SP(Sensing-perceiving) and NF was the highest. There was a difference according to the personality types in the effect of knowledge learned in school on the choice of food; the types of NT and NF did not influence on it. The degree of regularity in the amount of every meal showed a significant difference according to the personality types (p<.05); students with NT and SJ types had the regular meals. The factors which could influence on the dietary behavior were parents(60.7%), friends(16.9%) and mass media and books(13.8%), etc. School education had a little influence on the dietary behavior, only 8.0%. Therefore, more practical education was needed. In the food preference, the type of NF preferred the foods with sweet taste while the others with hot taste.
Anthocyanin accumulation and plant growth were examined in petunia (NT and $T_2$ transgenic plants) by determining the effects of different sources of light and varying light/dark cycles. Red light significantly enhanced anthocyanin content of B-peru+mPAP1; however, it had a negative effect on anthocyanin production in RsMYB1 plants. In general, white light was found to be reasonable for anthocyanin accumulation in all plants. In case of light/dark cycles, application of seven days of light:14 days of dark significantly enhanced anthocyanin content. We found that anthocyanin content detected in transgenic plants expressing anthocyanin regulatory transcription factor genes (B-peru+mPAP1 or RsMYB1) was higher than that in NT plants in all treatments. Plant growth was also influenced by the different light sources and dark/light cycles. Taken together, our results suggest that light source and light/dark cycle play an important role in anthocyanin production and plant growth. The choice of the optimal conditions is also important for anthocyanin production and plant growth depending on NT or transgenic plants carrying anthocyanin regulatory transcription factors.
