Hardness of rubbery materials, which is important for dimensional stability and product performance, was investigated upon temperature change in this study. A newly developed IRHD (International Rubber Hardness Degree) tester was used to measure the hardness changes of NR and SBR specimens at various temperatures and the hardness values were compared with the Young's modulus. The harness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR showed an abrupt change near the glass transition temperatures. The hardness and Young's modulus were increased by increasing temperature due to the increased random chain conformation of molecules. The effect of temperature on hardness and Young's modulus of NR and SBR specimens filled with carbon black and silica was decreased by increasing filler content.
The effects of zinc surfactant (ZB) on the bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)disulfide (TESPD)-silica mixture in natural rubber (NR) and solution butadiene-co-styrene rubber(S-SBR) were compared with respect to their rheological property, processability, physical properties, and silica dispersion. In the NR compound, addition of the ZB increased the reversion resistance time (T-2), the tensile modulus, and the BO time; however, lowered the viscosity, the HBU, and tans values. In the S-SBR copound, addition of the ZB increased the $tan{\delta}$ values while lowered the T-2, the tensile modulus the BO time, the viscosity, and the HBU of the compound. In the NR compounds, addition of the ZB significantly increased the processability and mechanical property. However, in the S-SBR compounds, it improved the processability the mechanical property was not improved.
Tensile properties including Young's modulus and tear strength were measured for four different rubber compounds; natural rubber(NR), styrene-butadiene copolymer(SBR), ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM), and brominated isobutylene-p-methyl-styrene copolymer(BIMS) as a function of temperature and degree of cure. To see the effect of over cure, a measurement was made of the tensile strength and swelling behavior of the over-cured rubber compounds. Young's modulus, E, was found to have linear dependency on the degree of cure for all rubber compounds. EPDM and BIMS showed the highest and lowest slopes, respectively. The slope of NR and SBR lay between EPDM and BIMS. Tear strength, Gc, decreased in the order of NR>BIMS>SBR>EPDM. As the cure time was extended the degree of cure of NR and SBR decreased, while that of BIMS increased. EPDM showed little change in the degree of cure.
The retardation effects of a new polymeric UV stabilizer, DGEBA-HALS, on the UV degradation of SBR and NR were investigated in this study. The UV degradation behaviors of three different rubber compounds, without any photostabilizer and with commercial Cyabsorb UV-3529 and DGEBA-HALS, were compared. Also, the physical characteristics such as Young's modulus, tensile strength, blow-off deformation and crosslink density were examined. The Young's modulus was increased by UV irradiation for all samples, and the tensile strength, after UV irradiation, of the compound with UV stabilizer was better than that of the compound without stabilizer. Especially, the tensile strength of UV irradiated NR was improved by adding DGEBA-HALS. The results of blow-off deformation were in accord with those of Young's modulus. The degree of transmission of SBR compounds obtained from UV-vis transmission spectra was improved about 4% by adding the UV stabilizer. Commercial Cyabsorb UJV-3529 and DGEBA-HALS showed similar trends of transmission. The SEM photographs of SBR surface showed that the size of cracks created by UV irradiation became smaller by adding UV stabilizer. In particular, it is observed that the stabilization effect of DGEBA-HALS was better than that of commercial Cyabsorb UV-3529.
A coil pyrolyzer and processor-controlled gas chromatograph were used for analysis of rubber for compounding ratio of the single and blend rubber vlucanizates. Variables such as sample size, pyrolysis temperature, time allowed for pyrolysis, the column packing material, its length and programmable temperature for gas chromatography were examined to obtain optimum condition for application to NR, BR and SBR blends. By application fixed conditions, three kinds of standard curves were finally obtained from thirty samples of blend vulcanizates which were prepared in the pilot plant, NIRI. It is possible to determine rubber composition and their ratio in NR, BR and SBR products by pyrolysis.
The experimental kinetics was analyzed for commercial rubbers such as NR, IR, BR, SBR 1500, and SBR 1700. Kinetic analysis for the commercial rubbers was performed using a thermogravimetric method, which the activation energies of NR obtained by Kissinger, Friedman, ana Ozawa's method were 195.0, 198.3, and 186.3 kJ/mol, respectively. whereas that of SBR 1500 were 246.4, 247.5, and 254.8 kJ/mol, respectively. It was shown that the yield of pyrolytic oil was generally increased with increasing the final temperature. Considering the effect of heating rate. it was found that the yield of pyrolytic oil was not consistent for each sample. The number average molecular weight of pyrolitic oil of SBR 1500 was in the range of 740-2486. The calorific value of SBR 1500 was 39-40 kJ/g, and it might be a considerable energy potential although it was lower than the conventional fuel such as kerosene, diesel, light fuel, and heavy fuel.

The optimum loading of carbon black was studied for the rubber compounds of natural rubber(NR), butadiene rubber(BR), and styrene-butadiene rubber(SBR) with different amount of oil. The optimum loading of carbon black was determined by the volume ratio of carbon black and L factor of Lee's theory. The optimum loading of carbon black was confirmed by the examination of physical properties of the rubbers. The optimum loading amounts of carbon black for the each rubber compound were 60 phr for NR, 57 phr for BR, 65 phr for SBR-A, 70 phr for SBR-B, and 76 phr for SBR-C, respectively. The optimum loading of carbon black was increased by 5 phr for every increment of 20 phr of oil content. It was revealed that the optimum loading amount of carbon black determined by L factor is closely related to the tensile strength of the rubber compounds. The optimum loading amount of carbon black was observed at the amount which shows the maximum value of tensile strength.
The purpose of this dissertation is to study the physical properties of cellular rubber products for industrial use. Vulcanization characteristics were investigated by usingcure curve that had obtained by means of Rheometer. The results of physical properties, vulcanization characteristics and foaming states are as follows. 1. The test results for vulcanization characteristics of NR compounds indicated that in the recipe R-1. When accelerator D is used, the optimum conditions of vulcanizate are obtained, while formula R-2 and R-3 have shown higher torgue at curing time, $1{\sim}2$ minutes. Cellular rubber product test in terms of compression set and compression deflection has also met the requirements of SAE. 2. For SBR compounds, S-1 formula was the best in terns of vulcanization characteristics, and for the blowing structure of cellular rubber products, formula S-3 in which accelerator M is added was fair. All other test results, such as compression set and compression deflection properties met SAE requirements. 3. NBR compound (N-1) including accelerator TT was the best in terms of vulcanization characteristic and also blowing structure. All other properties listed above met requirements, particulary for oil resistance test. 4. In the test of EPDM compounds, when mixed accelerator, M and TT, is used(formula E-1) the best results were obtained. Since EPDM is hydrocarbon elastomer, oil resistance test failed. All other properties met the requirement specified in SAE.
The kinetic analysis was carried out for commercial rubbers such as NR, IR, BR, SBR 1500, and SBR 1700. Kinetic analysis for the commercial rubbers was performed using the thermogravimetric method, with which the activation energies of NR obtained by Kissinger, Friedman, and Ozawa's method were 195.0, 198.3 and 186.3kJ/mol, whereas that of SBR 1500 were 246.4, 247.5 and 254.8kJ/mol, respectively. It was shown that the yield of pyrolytic oil was generally increased with final temperature increasing, yet slightly decreased or increased over $700^{\circ}C$. Considering the effect of heating rate, it was found that the yield of pyrolytic oil was not consistent for each sample. The number average molecular weight of SBR 1500 was in the range of 740~2486. The calorific value of SBR 1500 was 39~40kJ/g, which were made comparative study of the conventional fuel such as kerosene, diesel, light fuel, and heavy fuel. Therefore it was essential that the selection of the suitable kinetic model and the mathematical solution because of the difference in parameters obtained from each method. It was proposed that the range of $600~700^{\circ}C$ in final temperature and high heating rate due to short run time. It was suggested that the pyrolytic oil be available to use to the fuel.
We have studied the blending effects of cis-1,4-polybutadiene (CBR) and styrene-tutadiene rubber at various blending ratios of 100 : 0, 70 30, 50 : 50, 30 : 70, 0 : 100, and of carbon black ISAF and HAP at various compounding ratios of 45 PHR, 55 PHR, 65 PHR, for tyre tread rubber. The results obtained are summerized as follows; 1. For tyre tread rubber, it was found to increased efficiency to use SBR polymer only than to use the blending ratio CB/SBR=30/70 below. But it was observed that the latter was adapted for the bus or truck tyre and the former for the passenger tyre. 2. Excellent efficiency was obtained in case of carbon black compounding ratio of 55%, and also the compounding of ISAF made better efficiency than that of HAF. 3. Carbon black was more efficient to SBR than to CB. 4. For the aging ratio, the compounding rubber of NR was the highest, and the ratio was decreased in order of the compounding rubber of oil-extended SBR or CB polymer only, the compounding rubber of non oil-extended SBR or CB polymer only, and the blending rubber.
