  • Seismic base isolation has been accepted as one of the most popular design procedures to protect important structures against earthquakes. However, due to lack of information and experimental data the application of base isolation is quite limited to nuclear power plant (NPP) industry. Moreover, the effects of inelastic behavior of soil beneath base-isolated NPP have raised questions to the effectiveness of isolation device. This study applies the wavelet analysis to investigate the effects of soil-structure interaction (SSI) on the seismic response of a base-isolated NPP structure. To evaluate the SSI effects, the NPP structure is modelled as a lumped mass stick model and combined with a soil model using the concept of cone models. The lead rubber bearing (LRB) base isolator is used to adopt the base isolation system. The shear wave velocity of soil is varied to reflect the real rock site conditions of structure. The comparison between seismic performance of isolated structure and non-isolated structure has drawn. The results show that the wavelet analysis proves to be an efficient tool to evaluate the SSI effects on the seismic response of base-isolated structure and the seismic performance of base-isolated NPP is not sensitive to the effects in this case.

  • Several researches have been studied to enhance the seismic performance of nuclear power plants (NPPs) by application of seismic isolation. If a seismic base isolation system is applied to NPPs, seismic performance of nuclear power plants should be reevaluated considering the soil-structure interaction effect. The seismic fragility analysis method has been used as a quantitative seismic safety evaluation method for the NPP structures and equipment. In this study, the seismic performance of an isolated NPP is evaluated by seismic fragility curves considering the soil-structure interaction effect. The designed seismic isolation is introduced to a containment building of Shin-Kori NPP which is KSNP (Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant), to improve its seismic performance. The seismic analysis is performed considering the soil-structure interaction effect by using the linearized model of seismic isolation with SASSI (System for Analysis of Soil-Structure Interaction) program. Finally, the seismic fragility is evaluated based on soil-isolation-structure interaction analysis results.

  • This paper introduces a base isolation system-tuned mass damper inerter (BIS-TMDI) hybrid system to the AP1000 nuclear power plant (NPP), which reduces seismic damage potential of the NPP structure. The effects of fluid-structure interaction (FSI) caused by the passive containment cooling system water storage tank (PCCWST) on NPP's seismic performance are investigated. The FSI of water tank theoretical model is considered based on the Housner's model, and a series of time history analyses are performed to prove the rationality of the proposed model. Three single-objective optimization strategies are employed to minimize the relative displacement variance and absolute acceleration variance of the upper structure, as well as the filtered energy index (FEI). Furthermore, a multi-objective optimization strategy considering all these three indexes is proposed to obtain optimal parameters of vibration control. The influence of vibration control strategies on the relative deformation and acceleration of the upper structure is explored with various water level ratios. The analytical results indicate that the proposed BIS-TMDI strategy has significantly reduced the NPP structure's seismic response. The effectiveness of the vibration control strategy is influenced by the water level ratio, emphasizing the significance of designing an appropriate water level ratio to reduce NPP structure's seismic response.

  • N+NPP+ HLEBSF (high low emitter back surface field) solar cells which have N+N high low junction in the emitter as well as N+PP+ BSF cells were designed and fabricated by using <111> oriented P type Si wafers with the resistivity of 10$\Omega$/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and the thickness of 13-15 mil. Physical parameters (impurity concentration, thickness) at each region of N+PP+ and N+NPP+ cell were made equally through same masks and simultaneous process except N region of HLEBSF cell to investigate the high low emitter junction effect for efficiency improvement. Under the light intensity of 100 mW/$\textrm{cm}^2$, total area (active area) conversion efficiency were typically 10.94% (12.16%) for N+PP+ BSF cells and 12.07% (13.41%) for N+N PP+ cells. Efficiency improvement of N+NPP+ cell which has high low emitter Junction structure is resulted from the suppression of emitter recombination current and the increasement of open circuit voltage (Voc) and short circuit current (Ish) by removing heavy doping effects occurring in N+ emitter region.

  • Reactions of 1',2-bis(diphenylphosphino)-l-(N,N-dimethylaminomethyl)ferrocene (FcNPP) with $M(CO)_6$ (M=Cr, Mo, W) in the presence of TMNO (Trimethylamine oxide) in a stoichiometric ratio of 1 : 1.5 : 3.5 produced a series of Gp 6 metal carbonyl derivatives with a variety of coordination modes: M(CO)$_4({\eta}^2$-FcNPP-P,P) (M=Cr, Mo, W), $M(CO)_5({\eta}^1-FcNPP-P) (M=Mo, W)\;,\; M_2(CO)_9({\eta}^1\;,\;{\eta}^2-FcNPP-P,P,N) (M=Cr, Mo)\;,\;M_2(CO)_{10}({\eta}^1\;,\;{\eta}^1-FcNPP-P,P) (M=Cr, Mo, W)\;, and\;W(CO)_4({\eta}^2-FcNPP(O)-P,N)$. All these complexes were characterized by microanalytical and spectroscopic techniques. In one case, the structure of W(CO)$_4({\eta}^2$-FcNPP(O)-P,N) was determined by X-ray crystallography. Crystals are monocinic, space group P$2_{1/C}$, with a=10.147(2), b=19.902(3), c=19.821(4) ${\AA},\;{\beta}=96.88(2)^{\circ},\;V=3974(l){\AA}^3$, Z=4, and $D_{calc}=1.64 g cm^{-3}$. The geometry around the central tungsten metal is a distorted octahedron, with the nitrogen and phosphorus atoms being cis to each other. Some of these complexes exhibited catalytic activities in the allylic oxidation and epoxidation of cholesterly acetate. Other oxidation products were also formed with the different chemical yields and product distribution depending upon the ligand and the central metal.

  • This article presents a new design of earthquake instrumentation that is suitable for quick decision-making after the seismic event at the nuclear power plant (NPP). The main objective of this work is to ensure more availability of the NPP by expediting walk-down period when the seismic wave is incident. In general, the decision-making to restart the NPP after the seismic event requires more than 1 month if an earthquake exceeds operating basis earthquake level. It affects to the plant availability significantly. Unnecessary shutdown can be skipped through quick assessments of operating basis earthquake, safe shutdown earthquake events, and damage status to structure, system, and components. Multidecision parameters such as cumulative absolute velocity, peak ground acceleration, Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, floor response spectrum, and cumulative fatigue are discussed. The implementation scope on the field-programmable gate array platform of this work is limited to cumulative absolute velocity, peak ground acceleration, and Modified Mercalli Intensity. It can ensure better availability of the plant through integrated decision-making process by automatic assessment of NPP structure, system, and components.

  • A study of effects of design parameters on the seismic responses of base isolated structure is performed to reduce the seismic responses using a linear tw0-degree of freedom system and a lumped-mass model of a nuclear power p;ant(NPP). From the simplified 2 DOF system the optimal isolation frequency being less than 1/10th of the fundamental frequency of superstructure is obtained, and the isolator damping minimizing the peak acceleration depends on superstructure frequency. From the time history analyses for lumped mass model of NPP the optimal damping is calculated as 40% in containment building and 65% in reactor internal structure. Similar results are obtained in 2 DOF system

  • As valuable antibiotics, microbial natural products have been in use for decades in various fields. Among them are polyene compounds including nystatin, amphotericin, and nystatin-like Pseudonocardia polyenes (NPPs). Polyene macrolides are known to possess various biological effects, such as antifungal and antiviral activities. NPP A1, which is produced by Pseudonocardia autotrophica, contains a unique disaccharide moiety in the tetraene macrolide backbone. NPP B1, with a heptane structure and improved antifungal activity, was then developed via genetic manipulation of the NPP A1 biosynthetic gene cluster (BGC). Here, we generated a Streptomyces artificial chromosomal DNA library to isolate a large-sized NPP B1 BGC. The NPP B1 BGC was successfully isolated from P. autotrophica chromosome through the construction and screening of a bacterial artificial chromosome (BAC) library, even though the isolated 140-kb BAC clone (named pNPPB1s) lacked approximately 8 kb of the right-end portion of the NPP B1 BGC. The additional introduction of the pNPPB1s as well as co-expression of the 32-kb portion including the missing 8 kb led to a 7.3-fold increase in the production level of NPP B1 in P. autotrophica. The qRT-PCR confirmed that the transcription level of NPP B1 BGC was significantly increased in the P. autotrophica strain containing two copies of the NPP B1 BGCs. Interestingly, the NPP B1 exhibited a previously unidentified SARS-CoV-2 RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) inhibition activity in vitro. These results suggest that the Streptomyces BAC cloning of a large-sized, natural product BGC is a valuable approach for titer improvement and biological activity screening of natural products in actinomycetes.
