가솔린 엔진에서 가솔린-암모니아 혼합 연료의 연소 및 배기 특성 (Combustion Characteristics and Exhaust Emissions in Spark-ignition Engine Using Gasoline-ammonia)

  • The effect of gaseous ammonia direct injection on the engine performance and exhaust emissions in gasoline-ammonia dual fueled spark-ignition engine was investigated in this study. Results show that based on the gasoline contribution engine power increases as the ammonia injection timing and duration is advanced and increased, respectively. However, as the initial amount of gasoline is increased the maximum power output contribution from ammonia is reduced. For gasoline-ammonia, the appropriate injection timing is found to range from 320 BTDC at low loads to 370 BTDC at high loads and the peak pressures are slightly lower than that for gasoline due to the slow flame speed of ammonia, resulting in the reduction of combustion efficiency. The brake specific energy consumption (BSEC) for gasoline-ammonia has little difference compared to the BSEC for gasoline only. Ammonia direct injection causes slight reduction of $CO_2$ and CO for all presented loads but significantly increases HC due to the low combustion efficiency of ammonia. Also, ammonia direct injection results in both increased ammonia and NOx in the exhaust due to formation of fuel NOx and ammonia slip.

  • 미분탄 순산소 연소는 기존의 연소 방법과는 달리 산화제로 O2/CO2를 사용함으로써 NOx의 발생을 감소시킬 수 있으며, 고농도의 CO2를 쉽게 회수 할 수 있어 큰 주목을 받고 있다. NOx의 배출저감을 위한 기술로는 로 내에서의 재연소(reburning), 단계(staging) 연소등이 있으며, 후처리 NOx 저감기술로는 SCR, SNCR등이 있다. 그러나 이러한 기술들은 비용이 비싸다는 단점이 있으며, 미분탄 순산소 연소조건에서는 화염 안정성이 감소하는 문제점이 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 화염의 안정성과 밀접한 관련을 가지는 화염전파속도에 대해 미분탄 순산소 연소에서 석탄 입자의 물성치와 주위 기체의 특성이 화염전파속도에 미치는 영향을 수치적 방법을 통하여 해석하였으며, NO 저감의 한 방법인 연소가스 재순환(Flue Gas Recirculation)에 따른 연소특성 및 NO 생성 메커니즘의 영향과 석탄을 가스화 시키는 방법에 따른 연료의 연소특성에 대해 해석하였다.

대형디젤기관에 적용된 선택적 환원촉매장치 성능시험에 관한 연구 (The Performance Test of SCR System in a Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine)

  • Selective Catalytic Reduction is effective in the reduction of NOx emission. This research focused to evaluate the performance of a urea-SCR system and was conducted in two procedures. One is SCR reactor test using model gas in order to provide an optimal injection condition itself. In this step, some parametric study on emission temperature, space velocity, aspect ratio and the formation of urea spray were made by using flow visualization and Computation Fluid Dynamics techniques. The basic simulation results contributed in determining the layout for an actual engine test. The other is an engine performance and emission test. The urea injector was placed at the opposite direction of exhaust gases emitted into an exhaust duct and an optimal amount of a reducing agent is estimated accurately under different engine loads and speeds. Furthermore, the variation of NOx emission and applied amount of urea was investigated in terms of modes under the condition of with and without SCR, and other emissions such as PM, CO and NMHC were evaluated quantitatively as well. This research may provide fundamental data for the practical use of urea-SCR in future.

Discovery and Characterization of a Thermostable NADH Oxidase from Pyrococcus horikoshii OT3

  • A gene (PH0311) encoding a hypothetical protein from the genome sequence data of the hyperthermophilic archaeon Pyrococcus horikoshii OT3 was cloned and over-expressed in Escherichia coli. The purified recombinant protein was found to possess FAD-dependent NADH oxidase activity, although it lacked sequence homology to any other known general NADH oxidase family. The product of the PH0311 gene was thus designated PhNOX (NADH oxidase from Pyrococcus horikoshii), with an estimated molecular weight of 84 kDa by gel filtration and 22 kDa by SDS-PAGE, indicating it to be a homotetramer of 22 kDa subunits. PhNOX catalyzed the oxidation of reduced ${\beta}$-NADH with subsequent formation of $H_2O_2$ in the presence of FAD as a cofactor, but not ${\alpha}$-NADH, ${\alpha}$-NADPH, or ${\beta}$-NADPH. PhNOX showed high affinity for ${\beta}$-NADH with a Km value of 3.70 ${\mu}$M and exhibited optimum activity at pH 8.0 and 95$^{\circ}C$ as it is highly stable against high temperature.

  • The emission of nitrogen oxides has a great environmental impact. It leads to Los Angeles type smog, and it recently has attracted attention as a source of ultrafine dust. The main sources of nitrogen oxides are internal combustion engines and industrial boilers. These emission sources are processes that are essential for human industrial activities, so the regulation of original use is impossible. Therefore, special control methods should be applied to reduce NOx emissions into the atmosphere. In this study, we investigated how the supply of ER and urea influences the removal of nitrogen oxides from SRF combustion boilers. Experimental results show that the removal efficiency of nitrogen oxides can be up to 80% under the conditions of ER 2.0 and a urea feed of 0.5 LPM.

The Effect of Fuel Injection Timing on the Combustion and Emission Characteristics of a Natural Gas Fueled Engine at Part Loads

  • For a sequential port fuel injection natural gas engine, its combustion and emission characteristics at low loads are crucial to meet light duty vehicle emission regulations. Fuel injection timing is an important parameter related to the mixture formation in the cylinder. Its effect on the combustion and emission characteristics of a natural gas engine were investigated at 0.2 MPa brake mean effective pressure (BMEP)/2000 rpm and 0.26 MPa BMEP/1500 rpm. The results show that early fuel injection timing is beneficial to the reduction of the coefficient of variation (COV) of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) under lean burn conditions and to extending the lean burn limits at the given loads. When relative air/fuel ratio is over 1.3, fuel injection timing has a relatively large effect on engine.out emissions. The levels of NOx emissions are more sensitive to the fuel injection timing at 0.26 MPa BMEP/1500 rpm. An early fuel injection timing under lean burn conditions can be used to control engine out NOx emissions.

비단열 화염편 모델을 이용한 Mild Combustor의 연소특성 해석 (A Study on Characteristics of Mild Combustion using the Radiative Flamelet Model)

  • Mild combustion or Flameless oxidation(FLOX) have been considered as one of the most prospective clean-combustion technologies to meet both the targets of high process efficiency and low pollutant emissions. A mild combustor with high air preheating and strong internal exhaust gas recirculation is characterized by relatively low flame temperature, low NOx emissions, no visible flame and no sound. In this study, the Steady Flamelet Approach has been applied to numerically analyze the combustion processes and NOx formation in the mild combustor. The detailed discussion has been made f3r the basic characteristics of mild combustor, numerical results and limitation of the present combustion modeling.

엔진 사이클 시뮬레이션에 의한 직분식 디젤기관의 NO 배출물에 미치는 흡기충전 조건의 영향에 관한 연구 (A Study on Effect of Intake Charging Conditions upon NO Emissions in a DI Diesel Engine Using Engine Cycle Simulation)

  • In this study, a cycle simulation using a two-zone model is carried out to investigate the effect of intake charging conditions such as oxygen concentration, temperature and pressure on NO emissions in a DI diesel engine. The model is validated against measurements in terms of cylinder pressure, torque, BSFC and NOx emissions with 2902 cc DI diesel engine. Calculated results can be summarized as follows. The oxygen concentration in the intake charge is decreased with increasing of EGR rate and equivalence ratio. As the intake oxygen concentration is reduced, the combustion pressure and the burned gas temperature decrease and, as a result, NO formation decreases. Also, the results show that as the intake pressure increases and the intake temperature decreases, NO emissions are effectively reduced.

대향 부연소실이 있는 밀폐연소실 내의 $NO_x$ 저감기구에 대한 연구 (A Study on NOx Reduction Mechanism in a Closed Vessel with Opposed Dual Pre-chambers)

  • It is well known that NOx formation has a strong dependence on the maximum temperature and correspondingly with the maximum chamber pressure of a closed combustion system. However, in a case of impinging-jet-flame (IJF hereafter) combustion with opposed dual pre-chambers, low $NO_x$ formation with high pressure could be achieved, but its mechanism has not been clearly understood so far. In this study, a three-dimensional analysis is adopted to resolve time-variant local properties that might indicate the mechanism of IJF combustion. Numerical results are verified by comparing them with experiments. The IJF combustion in a vessel with no pre-chamber, with single pre-chamber, and with dual pre-chambers is studied. The orifice diameter and the volumetric ratio of pre-chamber are used as geometric parameters. The effects of main-chamber ignition delay time and combustion time of main-chamber, orifice exit velocity, orifice exit temperature, turbulent kinetic energy of main-chamber and spatial distribution of temperature in the latter stage of combustion are investigated. A longer main-chamber ignition delay and a shorter main-chamber combustion time suppress the formation of high temperature region with respect to mean temperature, which consequently results in less NO production.

발전보일러의 최적연소조정에 대한 실험적 연구 (The Study of Optimized Combustion Tuning for Fossil Power Plant)

  • Fossil power plants firing lower grade coals or equipped with modified system for NOx controls are challenged with maintaining good combustion conditions while maximizing generation and minimizing emissions. In many cases significant derate, availability losses and increase in unburned carbon levels can be attributed to poor combustion conditions as a result of poorly controlled local fuel and air distribution within the boiler furnace. In order to develop a on-line combustion tuning system, field test was conducted at operating power boiler. During the field test the exhaust gases' $O_2$, NOx and CO was monitored by using a spatially distributed monitoring grid located in the boiler's high temperature vestibule and upper convective back-pass region. At these locations, the flue gas flow is still significantly stratified, and air in-leakage is minimal which enables tracing of poor combustion zones to specific burners and over-fire air ports. using these monitored information we can improving combustion at every point within the furnace, therefore the boiler can operate at reduced excess $O_2$ and gas temperature deviation, reduced furnace exit gas temperature levels while also reducing localized hot spots, corrosive gas conditions, slag or clinker formation and UBC. Benefits include improving efficiency, reducing NOx emissions, increasing output and maximizing availability. Discussion concerning the reduction of greenhouse gases is prevalent in the world. When taking a practical approach to addressing this problem, the best way and short-term solution to reduce greenhouse gases on coal-fired power plants is to improve efficiency. From this point of view the real time optimized combustion tuning approach is the most effective and implemented with minimal cost.
