  • Multi-layered chip inductors were prepared with good magnetic properties by sintering Ni-Zn-Cu ferrites at a lower temperature. A slurry with 49.5mol%Fe$_{2}O_{3}$, 20.5mol% ZnO, 20mol% NiO and 10nol% CuO was cast into tapes with 60-100\ulcorner of thickness with a doctor blade techniques. The tapes were screen-pronted with 100% silver electrodes, layered and pressed at 250kg/cm$^{2}$ and then sintered ant 900$^{\circ}C$ for 2h. Inductance with internal electrodes printed 5, 10, and 15 turns showed 4.9, 15 and 24$\mu$, respectively, at 1MHz.

  • To reach 100 Gbit/in$^2$ magnetic recording densities in hard disk drives specular enhancement of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) effect in spin valve (SV) films has become one of the indispensable means for application as read elements in recording heads [1]. More recently specular spin valve (SSV) structure containing nano-oxides layers (NOL) were reported [2], where MR enhancement is caused to extended mean free path of majority spin polarized electrons through specular reflection at metal/insulator interfaces [3] in the SV films. • The synthesis of bisphenol A-derived calixarenes has been studied by changing the protecting group of the phe-nol moiety and reaction conditions. Depending on the protecting groups, the corresponding calix[6,7,8]arenes are obtained in different rat ios. For example, whcn mono-p-tert-butyldimethylsilyl-protected bisphenol A is treated with paraformaldehyde and a catalytic amount ofaqueous KOH in refluxing p-xylene with a Dean-Stark water collector for 36 h, the corresponding calix[8]arene, calix[7]arene, and calix[6]arene are producedand separated in the ratio of about 3 : 2 : l and with overall 63% yield. The calixarenes are characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass analysis. The X-raycrystal structure of the calix[8]arene shows a pleated loop confor-mation, stabilized by intramoIecular hydrogen bonding between the inner phenolic hydroxy groups.

  • Geun Hyung Park is one of the playwrights who consistently pursues his unique world of play. One of the characteristics that is constantly discovered in Park's plays is the motif of 'family.' Park chooses family as the motif in most of his work. Park particularly emphasizes 'family life' rather than 'individual life' to focus on the internal problems of families. Therefore, the motif of family in Park's plays takes a very important position in the content and theme. The Korean society imposes unique value on families and possesses a strictly obstinate family ideology. Park observes distorted family relations or individuals who cannot be happy within their families to identify the problems related to the family ideology that is deeply rooted in the Korean society. This is one of the important backgrounds for which Park is constantly dealing with 'family life.' This study selected five of Park's most famous plays to specifically examine Park's critical understanding of family ideology. First, his criticizes extreme family egoism by depicting a family that cannibalizes people to keep the family full. Park chooses 'absurd time and space' and the extreme subject of 'human flesh' to warn his audiences about the awful consequences of family egoism. His , which is the only piece that deals with family history among the five pieces selected, criticizes Korea's unique family-centered ideology by humorously depicting the history of the Cho family that is all about maintaining and worshipping the its clan. He reveals the unethical and hypocritical attitudes of the Cho family for the audiences to reconsider the family-centered ideology of the Korean society. In , he talks about the son and the father who lose his ethical authority and fail to perform his paternal responsibilities to criticize the traditional family ideology of patriarchism and suggests the pessimistic future of patriarchism. contrasts a blood-related family with an irresponsible father and a quasi-family to criticize the identity of blood-related families. In , Park depicts a 'smelly house' of a family in agonizing relations to deny the family myth and the maternal myth. He clearly shows how the ideals of family myth and maternal myth are distant from the reality. In result of this study, Park's criticism of family ideology appears in various forms. He comprehensively criticizes both the general family problems and the unique family issues of Korea. The family ideology of Korea is currently undergoing a radical change. It has been long since the traditional family ideologies have exposed problems to show the signs of crisis. Also, there have emerged various forms of families, including single-parent families, one-person families, adoption families, and multi-cultural families. In this respect, Park's critical understanding of family ideologies allows you to see the obvious family forms from a new perspective and greatly contributes to awakening the essential questions about families. Park's work is noticeable among the various artistic and literature pieces that deal with family issues because of his extraordinary skills to capture the key issues inherent in the problems of family ideologies.

  • This study was carried out to optimize the fermentation conditions for direct alcohol fermentation of xylose by Pichia stipitis CBS 5776. The best cell growth and the ethanol production were obtained under 0.05 VVM aeration and 300rpm agitation at $30^{\circ}C$ using 100 g/l xylose medium of the initial pH 5.0. In the above condition, the maximum specific growth rate and maximum cell concentration were 0.14hr-1 and $1.3 \times109$ cells/ml, respectively. Pichia stipitis CBS 5776 also produced 40.2g/l ethanol utilizing about 96% of 100g/l xylose after 72hr fermentation. At this point, the overall volumetric ethanol productivity was 0.56g/1-hr and the ethanol yield was 0.42 g-ethanol/g-xylose consumed, which corresponds to 82% of the theoretical yield.

  • This study was undertaken to investigate the effect of Taraxacum herba extract on the hepatic xanthine oxidase activity as a oxygen free radical generating enzyme in vitro and in vivo. It was observed that partial purified hepatic xanthine oxidase (type O) activity was strongly inhibited by the addition of Taraxacum herba n-butanol extract in vitro. The Km value of xanthine oxidase without affecting the Vmax value for xanthine was significantly increased by the addition of ta-dase (type O) activity was significantly inhibited by the treatment of Taraxacum gerba n-butanol ex-tract for 5days(over 40mg/kg, i.p), whereas, xanthine oxidase (type D) activity was not changed by the injection of Taracacum herba n-butanol extract. Meanwhile, liver weight / body weight(%), serum alanine aminotransferase activity and hepatic lipid peroxide content in Taraxacum herba n-buta-nol extract-treated rat were not changed. These findings led us to conclude that Taraxacum herba n-butanol extract may regulate the hepatic xanthine oxidase type O activity to prevent toxic effect of oxidative stress by the oxygen free radicals.

  • Batch experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of electron donor on reductive dechlorination of 2,4,5-trichlorophenol by a methanogenic consortium. The methanogenic consortium was obtained from the anaerobic digester of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. The batch reactor containing methanogenic consortium was spiked with 2,4,6-trichlorophenol at 10 mg/$\ell$. Acetate, ethanol, glucose of methanol, each was added as an electron donor for methanogenic consortium. During the course of the experiments liquid samples were taken from the batch reactor to measure dechlorination rate and find the dechlorination pathway of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol. After incubation 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was first dechlorinated to 2,4-dichlorophenol and then to 4-chlorophenol. Phenol was not detected in the batch reactor the highest rate of dechlorination of 2,4,6-trichlorophenol was observed when ethanol was used as an electron donor.

  • The growth characteristics of Rhodotorula sp. Y-55 were examined on minimal medium containing ethanol, acetic acid or acetadehyde as a sole carbon source by batch culture. The increased concentration of substrate reduced overall growth yield and prolonged lag time. The specific growth rate of the yeast was changed, depending upon the initial concentrations of ethanol and acetaldehyde during the exponential period, but was constant on acetic acid without regard to the initial substrate concentrations, giving a value of 0.l07h-1. The highest ${\mu}$ value was obtained on ethanol and acetadehyde substrates and the respective values were 0.270 at 20g/L and 0.041h-1 at 0.2g/L. The maximum overall growth yields were appeared to be 32.6% for ethanol of 10g/L, 25.6% for acetic acid of 20g/L, and 45% for acetaldehyde of 0.2g/L. The respective cellular contents of crude protein and nucleic acids were determined to be 41.5 and 4.9wt% on ethanol and 40.2 and 4.7wt% at the concentration revealing maximal growth yield.
