The electrode for gas sensor was prepared by using pitch-based activated carbon fibers and polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to investigate the toxic gas sensing characteristics. The physicochemical properties of activated carbon fibers electrode for gas sensor were analyzed with SEM and BET. Toxic gases sensing property of the electrode was also identified by different toxic gases such as $NH_3$, NO and $CO_2$. The specific surface area of activated carbon fibers electrode for gas sensor was decreased by 33% owing to PVA used as a binder compared with the activated carbon fibers. However, its pore size distribution of the ACF electrode was not greatly influenced by PVA. The activated carbon fibers electrode for gas sensor responded to toxic gases by electron hopping unlike semiconductor based gas sensors. In this study, activated carbon fibers electrode was decreased to 7.5% in resistance for the NH3 gas of the 100 ppm concentration and its $NH_3$ gas sensing property was confirmed the most excellent compared with other toxic gases.

As public interest in air quality and environment problem is increasing, many researches are being carried out the gas measurement system. Especially, Non-dispersive infrared (NDIR) measurements using Beer-Lambert gas sensing principle with very high selectivity and long life time are noted for reliable method. It is possible to detect various gases such as carbon dioxide (CO2), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), but many researches are mostly concentrated on CO2 sensor. The multi-gas measuring instrument is high price and unwieldy, therefore it is not suitable for wide area required numerous instrument. So we study the NDIR multi-gas measurement system for air quality based on wireless sensor network, and experiment the realized measurement system.
With the increasing concern of global warming caused by greenhouse gases owing to the recent industrial development, there is a growing need for advanced technology to control these emissions. Among the various greenhouse gases, nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a major contributor to global warming and is mainly released from sources, such as automobile exhaust and factories. Although semiconductor-type NO2 gas sensors, such as SnO2, have been extensively studied, they often require high operating temperatures and complicated manufacturing processes, while lacking selectivity, resulting in inaccurate measurements of NO2 gas levels. To address these limitations, a novel sensor using PbS quantum dots (QDs) was developed, which operates at low temperatures and exhibits high selectivity toward NO2 gas owing to its strong oxidation reaction. Furthermore, the use of P3HT conductive polymer improved the thin film quality, reactivity, and reaction rate of the sensor. The sensor demonstrated the ability to accurately measure NO2 gas concentrations ranging from 500 to 100 ppm, with a 5.1 times higher sensitivity, 1.5 times higher response rate, and 1.15 times higher recovery rate compared with sensors without P3HT.

In this study, a sensor for detection of nitric oxide (NO) gas was developed using petroleum pitch-based activated carbon which was synthesized from pyrolysis fuel oil (PFO). Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) was added to increase molecular weight by stimulating a polymerization of components in PFO during the pitch synthesis process. The increase in the molecular weight of pitch contributed to the improvement of textural properties of activated carbon, such as the specific surface area and micropore volume. It also enhanced the sensitivity of NO gas sensor based on the activated carbon. In addition, the effect of PET addition during the pitch synthesis on the surface oxygen content and conductivity of activated carbon was investigated. Finally, the correlation of the sensitivity with physical properties of activated carbon was analyzed.

Carbon nanotubes (CNT) which were grown, on the alumina substrate with a pair of comb-type Au electrodes, by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition have been investigated for $NO_2$ gas sensor. The electrical resistance of CNT film decreased with temperature, indicating a semiconductor type of CNT, and also the resistance of CNT sensor decreased with increasing $NO_2$ concentration. Upon exposure to $NO_2$ gas, the electrical resistance of CNT film sensor rapidly decreased within 3 minutes, and then showed a constant value after $20\~30$ minutes. It is found that the sensitivity of CNT sensor has been improved by air oxidation. The CNT sensor oxidized at $450^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes showed higher sensitivity value than that without oxidation by $27\%$, even for a low 250 ppb $NO_2$ concentration at operating temperature of $200^{\circ}C$. But it needs a recovery time more than 20 minutes for reuse after detection of $NO_2$ gas.

$WO_3$ based semiconduction sensor have been reported to have excellent sension properties to $NO_x$ gases by many researchers. In this study appropriate $WO_3$ precursor have been chosen and thin film sensors were fabricated by metallo organic deposition process. Their sensing characteristics were investigated as a function of NO concentration, heat treatment, and measuring temperature. Tungsten dichloro triethoxide was found to be a good precursor for $WO_3$ thin film in this method. Samples heat treated at $600^{\circ}C$ showed sensitivity (S) 200 to 50 ppm NO gas when measuring temperature was $150^{\circ}C$.
We investigated the effects of Co doping on the NO gas sensing characteristics of ZnO-carbon nanotube (ZnO-CNT) layered composites fabricated by coaxial coating of single-walled CNTs with ZnO using pulsed laser deposition. Structural examinations clearly confirmed a distinct nanostructure of the CNTs coated with ZnO nanoparticles of an average diameter as small as 10 nm and showed little influence of doping 1 at.% Co into ZnO on the morphology of the ZnO-CNT composites. It was found from the gas sensing measurements that 1 at.% Co doping into ZnO gave rise to a significant improvement in the response of the ZnO-CNT composite sensor to NO gas exposure. In particular, the Co-doped ZnO-CNT composite sensor shows a highly sensitive and fast response to NO gas at relatively low temperatures and even at low NO concentrations. The observed significant improvement of the NO gas sensing properties is attributed to an increase in the specific surface area and the role as a catalyst of the doped Co elements. These results suggest that Co-doped ZnOCNT composites are suitable for use as practical high-performance NO gas sensors.

This paper presented a low-cost thick film gas sensor module, which was based on simple PCB (Printed Circuit Board) process. The proposed sensor module included a $NO_2/H_2$ gas sensor, a relative humidity sensor, and a heating element. The $NO_2/H_2$ gas and relative humidity sensors were realized by screen-printing $SnO_2,\;BaTiO_3$ nano-powders on IDTS (Interdigital Transducer) of a PCB substrate, respectively. At first 1% $H_2$ gas flowed into the sensor chamber. After 4 min, air filled the chamber while $H_2$ gas flow stopped. This experiment was performed repeatedly. The Identical procedure was used for the $NO_2$ detection. The result for sensing $H_2$ gas showed the increase of voltage from 0.8V to 3.5V due to the conductance increase and its reaction response time by hydrogen flow was 65 sec. $NO_2$ sensing results showed 2.7 V voltage drop due to the conductance decrease and its response time was 3 sec through a voltage monitoring.
The Pd or Pt-doped $WO_{3}$ thin-film NOx sensor was fabricated. The $WO_{3}$-based thin films as a gas-sensing layer were deposited at ambient temperature in a high-vacuum resistance heated evaporator and annealed at $500^{\circ}C$. The gas sensitivity ($R_{gas}/R_{air}$) to 5 ppm $NO_{2}$ measured at the operating temperature of $300^{\circ}C$ was 50 (highest sensitivity) for the 0.5 wt.% $Pt-WO_{3}$ sensor.
