  • In an attempt to compare the antioxidation effects of constrain the oxidation and improve the structural stability, retinol and various antioxidants were together encapsulated by liposome. Four water soluble and four oil soluble antioxidants were tested for performance. The influence of tertiary butylhydroquinone(TBHQ), ${\alpha}$-glycosyl rutin(${\alpha}$-G rutin), licorece, pycnogenol as water soluble antioxidants and butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT), ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid, ferulic acid, natural concentrated tooopherol(no-tocopherol) as oil soluble antioxidants on the constraint of oxidation of retinol were investigated. Additional study was conducted to compare the synergic effect of antioxidation for retinol with licorice, pycnogenol, ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid and BHT. All the antioxidant used at the study constrained oxidation of retinol. The effect of antioxidation for retinol increased in order of licorice, pycnogenol, TBHQ, ${\alpha}$-G rutin as water soluble antioxidants and ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid, BHT, no-tocopherol, ferulic acid as oil soluble antioxidants. In conclusion, ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid is more effective retinol antioxidants than BHT. And the combination of ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid and BHT gave best synergic among six combinations.

  • We have investigated the oxidation of gas phase elemental mercury using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD). In the DBD process, active species such as $O_3$, OH, O and $HO_2$ are generated by collisions between electrons and gas molecules. Search active species convert elemental mercury into mercury oxide which is deposited into the wall of DBD reactor because of its low vapor pressure. The oxidation efficiency of elemental mercury has been decreased from 60 to 30% by increasing the initial concentration of the elemental mercury from 72 to $655{\mu}g/Nm^3$. The gas retention time at the DBD reactor has showed the little effect on the oxidation efficiency. The more oxygen concentration has induced the more oxidation of elemental mercury, whereas there has been no appreciable oxidation within pure $N_2$ discharge. It has indicated that oxygen atom and ozone, generated in air condition determine the oxidation of elemental mercury.

  • Birnessite, pyrolusite and hausmannite were synthesized and tested for the ability to oxidize Cr(III) to Cr(VI). These oxides differed in zero point of charge, surface area, and crystallinity. The kinetic study showed that Cr(III) oxidation on the Mn-oxide surface is a first-order reaction. The reaction rate was various for different oxide at different conditions. Generally the reaction by hausmannite, containing Mn(III), was faster than the others, and oxidation by pyrolusite was much slower. Solution pH and initial Cr(III) concentration had a significant effect on the reaction. Inhibited oxidation at higher pH and initial Cr(III) concentration could be due to the chance of Cr(III) precipitation or complexing on the oxide surface. Oxidations by birnessite and hausmannite were faster at lower pH, but pyrolusite exhibited increased oxidation capacity at higher pH in the range between 3.0 and 5.0. Reactions were also temperature sensitive. Although calculated activation energies for the oxidation reactions at pH 3.0 were higher than the general activation energy for diffusion, there is no experimental evidence to suggest which reaction is the rate limiting step.

  • Performance of catalyst was studied with various operating conditions for selective catalytic reduction of $NO_x$ with $NH_3$. It is confirmed that catalysts containing Mn and Cu have a good efficiency in the usage of oxygen by the $H_2$-TPR analysis. In the case of catalyst #1, $NO_x$ conversion was decrease with the increase of reaction temperature. But in the case of catalyst #2, $NO_x$ conversion was increased and then remained constant with the increase of reaction temperature. This phenomenon is due to the difference of the $NH_3$ oxidation of both catalysts.

  • Innovated technique to inactivate microorganisms has been developed. This technique uses plasma discharge in 2-phase (Air-Water). Dielectric Barrier (two phase) Discharging system is able to produce new oxidants for microorganisms. Products from discharging are $HNO_2$, $NO_2{^-}$, $HNO_3$, $NO_3{^-}$ and ozone but many other radicals can be generated as well. DBD water has low concentration of ozone (about 0.5mg/L), $NO_2{^-}$, $NO_3{^-}$ (about 10mg-N/L, 20mg-N/L respectively) and lots of $H^+$. These products play an important role in oxidation. Oxidation power by KI titration methods is approximately equivalent to $50mg-O_3/L$. Surprisingly stored DBD water could oxidize KI and maintain stable pH (about pH3) even after several days. Stored DBD water for 5 days has also more than 4log disinfection power to E. coli. However, DBD water cannot be used for drinking water directly due to it's toxicity. Additional process to neutralize pH and decrease toxicity must be applied.

  • Photocatalytic cement is receiving attention due to its high oxidation power that oxidizes nitrogen oxides (NOx), thus contributing to clean atmospheric environment. However, there has not been a thorough investigation on durability of a parent material, cementitious material, as a result of photocatalytic reactions. In this study, durability of photocatalytic cementitious materials exposed to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) gas was examined. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles containing cement paste samples were exposed to cycles of NO2 with UV light, followed by wetting and drying to simulate environmental condition. The surface of samples was characterized mechanically, chemically, and visually during the cycling. The results indicate that the photocatalytic efficiency decreased with continued NO2 oxidation due to calcium carbonate formation. The pits found from SEM demonstrate that chemical deterioration have occurred, such as acid attack or leaching. In conclusion, the photocatalytic reactions and its product could alter cementitious materials chemically and mechanically which could further affect long-term durability.

  • Partial oxidation of methane was carried out by ceria-promoted Ni-substituted hydrotalcite-derived catalysts ($Ce_xNi_3$-HTlc ; x=$0.3{\sim}1.2$) in a fixed-bed reactor. The Ce/Ni ratio of 0.3/3 in the catalyst showed the best catalytic activity but the Ce/Ni ratio became higher above 0.3/3, the catalyst became less active in short-term tests. No ceria promoted catalyst was started to decrease $CH_4$ conversion after 20 h but the Ce/Ni ratio 0.3/3 catalyst was kept its stability in long-term tests.

  • Photocatalytic cement has been receiving attention due to its high oxidation power that reduces nitrogen oxide, thus contributing to a clean atmospheric environment. However, there has not yet been a thorough investigation on the effect of photocatalytic reactions on the durability of cementitious material, the parent material. In this study, photocatalytic cement samples were exposed to nitric oxide gas and UV along with cycles of wetting and drying to simulate environmental conditions. The surface of samples was characterized mechanically, chemically, and visually during the cycling. The results indicate that that the photocatalytic efficiency decreased with continued NO oxidation. The pits found from SEM indicated that chemical deterioration, such as acid attack or leaching, did occur. However, this was not confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The hardness was not affected, probably due to the formation of CSH as evidenced by the XRD pattern. In conclusion, it was found that photocatalysis could alter cementitious materials both chemically and mechanically, which could further affect long-term durability.
