  • This paper presents a multitier GIS architecture to adapt to large-scale distributed networks and to improve data transfer performance with intelligent caching technique. We design this system using UML based on object-oriented analysis. We show some advantages in our proposed system against the ordinary GIS, in special, suitability to distributed networks.

  • In this paper an asymptotic iteration method is adopted to analyze non-linear free vibration of reticulated circular plates composed of beam members placed in two orthogonal directions. For the resulting linear ordinary differential equations in the process of iteration, the power series with rapid convergence has been applied to obtain an analytical solution for non-linear characteristic relation between the amplitude and frequency of the structure. Numerical examples are given, and the phenomena indicating hardening of such structures have been presented for the (immovable or movable) simply-supported and clamped circular plates.

  • This paper proposes a selection procedure of geospatial data for location guidance map generation system. The selection procedure requires some targets appointed by users as input data and outputs generation. The procedure is embedded in a prototype of object-oriented GIS. We show sample maps generated by the system.

  • We construct a symmetric finite volume element (SFVE) scheme for a self-adjoint elliptic problem on tetrahedron grids and prove that our new scheme has optimal convergent order for the solution and has superconvergent order for the flux when grids are quasi-uniform and regular. The symmetry of our scheme is helpful to solve efficiently the corresponding discrete system. Numerical experiments are carried out to confirm the theoretical results.

  • An endophytic fungus, Rhizosphaera pini strain NIE7426, was isolated from the sub-alpine coniferous tree Abies nephrolepis in Mt. Nochu of Gangwon Province. It was characterized by macroscopic and microscopic features, as well as the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) 1, 2 and 5.8S sequences. All morphological and molecular features support the first recognition of this taxon in Korea. In addition, this study adds A. nephrolepis as a host plant R. pini.

  • We investigated the tritrophic interactions associated with elevation and openness of dwarf bamboo (Sasa quelpaertensis Nakai) vegetation on Mt. Halla, Jeju Island. The interactions between dwarf bamboo plants and its consumers were investigated in four study sites with and without canopy along the elevation gradient. The ecological traits of dwarf bamboo included leaf area, water content, nitrogen content and carbon/nitrogen ratio. Arthropods were collected using a sweeping net and they were later divided into three different feeding guilds: herbivorous, omnivorous and predators. We found that the elevation and canopy openness on dwarf bamboo vegetation was positively related and as elevation increased and canopy opened, the bamboo densities and C/N ratio increased. However, the leaf area, water content and the N content decreased. The study sites with closed canopy indicated a relatively higher species richness of arthropods including insects. We concluded that the tritrophic interactions is closely related to the ecological characteristics of the dwarf bamboos, which is affected by elevation and canopy openness.
