A system for EMAT, which generates ultrasound by electro-magnectic forces and performs nondestructive testing in noncontact, was established. By linking it with a 3 axis scanning system and a data acquisition and processing system the automation of EMAT testing was attempted. A EMAT sensor was fabricated and the directivity pattern of it was measured. To be suitable automation, it has a transmitter and a receiver in one case and the main beam direction of it can be controlled by the frequency of driving signal. A program which controls the EMAT system, the 3 axis scanner and the data acquisition and processing system was developed. It also processes acquired data and displays the processing results. IBM-PC/AT compatible PC was used as main controller and the stratage of the program is emulation of real devices on the PC monitor. To provide the performance of the established EMAT system, two aluminium blocks containing artificial flaws and a welded aluminium block were tested. The result of the tests were satisfactory.
The structural wooden members of the ancient building are deteriorated by fungi and termite over time. The deteriorate of the members causes the decrease of the specific gravity and the strength of it, so the stability of the building is threatened. Therefore, in this study, the evaluation of the specific gravity, which is correlated with the strength of the wood, was conducted in the post member using Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE) - Drilling Resistance Test (DRT). For the purpose of it, the specific gravity and drilling resistance of small specimens was measured to obtain the correlation between the specific gravity and the drilling resistance. And then, the drilling resistance test of the post members, which were expected to have the deteriorated parts, was performed. Consequently, the correlation between the specific gravity and the drilling resistance was very high ($R^2=0.89$) and the distributions of the specific gravity were evaluated for the each member. Also, the results were verified by the visual inspection of the cross section of it. Especially, the various variations of the wood member such as the deteriorated parts with termite or fungi and the crack could be detected exactly but the knot couldn't because the drill could pass by or could not penetrate the knot.

The present paper reviews the widely used surface microstructural investigation technique and micro/nano nondestructive evaluation(NDE) technique which is able to evaluate the surface and subsurface. In general, the micro/nano defects and microstructural state of surface have great influence on the mechanical, physical, and chemical properties of bulk materials. The investigation technique of surface microstructure is possible to evaluate the defects and microstructural state with high reliability. The various applications and developments of each inspection technique have been introduced. Consequently, it is thought that the technique developments and applications of micro/nano NDE in nondestructive industries are extensively possible hereafter.
Advanced signal processing techniques have been long introduced and widely used in structural health monitoring (SHM) and nondestructive evaluation (NDE). In our research, we applied several signal processing approaches for our embedded ultrasonic structural radar (EUSR) system to obtain improved damage detection results. The EUSR algorithm was developed to detect defects within a large area of a thin-plate specimen using a piezoelectric wafer active sensor (PWAS) array. In the EUSR, the discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was first applied for signal de-noising. Secondly, after constructing the EUSR data, the short-time Fourier transform (STFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) were used for the time-frequency analysis. Then the results were compared thereafter. We eventually chose continuous wavelet transform to filter out from the original signal the component with the excitation signal's frequency. Third, cross correlation method and Hilbert transform were applied to A-scan signals to extract the time of flight (TOF) of the wave packets from the crack. Finally, the Hilbert transform was again applied to the EUSR data to extract the envelopes for final inspection result visualization. The EUSR system was implemented in LabVIEW. Several laboratory experiments have been conducted and have verified that, with the advanced signal processing approaches, the EUSR has enhanced damage detection ability.

The integrity of components and piping of operating nuclear power plants has been identified by in-service inspection(ISI) requirements and activities commensurate with standards and codes such as KEPIC MI or ASME Code Section XI. However, the other various degradation mechanisms not considered during design stage of nuclear power plants have been checked by enhanced ISI. The requirements of enhanced ISI have been voluntarily developed by the industry itself or strickly issued by regulatory body. Even though the requirements were developed by the industry, they should be reviewed by regulatory body for their application in nuclear power plants. The enhanced ISI activities and requirements of non-destructive examination(NDE) which reflect the degradation issues in nuclear power industry will be primarily discussed in this paper.

For an effective and efficient management of large amounts of preservice/inservice inspection(PSI/ISI) data in nuclear power plants, an intellegent Windows 95-based data management program was developed. This program enables the prompt extraction of previously conducted PSI/ISI conditions and results so that the time-consuming data management, painstaking data processing and analysis in the past are avoided. The program extracts, and the associated remedies. Furthermore, additional inspection data and comments can be easily added or deleted for subsequent PSI/ISI operation. Although the initial version of the program was applied to Kori nuclear power plant, this program can be equally applied to other nuclear power plant. And also this program can be used to offer the fundamental data for application of evaluation data related to fracture mechanics analysis(FMA), probabilistic reliability assessment(PRA) of PSI/ISI results, performance demonstration initiative(PDI) and risk-informed ISI based on probability of detection(POD) information of ultrasonic examination. Besides, the program can be further developed as a unique PSI/ISI data management expert system that can be apart of PSI/ISI data management expert system that can be a part of PSI/ISI Total Support System(TSS) for Korean nuclear power plants.
Pipes, commonly used in energy and petrochemical facilities, have various types of defects induced by diverse factors and this is often issued in NDE society. Ultrasonic guided wave inspection method are normally adopted to insure the healthiness of industry pipes. Recently, ultrasonic guided wave inspection is shifted to adopt arrayed probes and system. And here we developed an array guided wave ultrasonic testing system can adapt arrayed probes and focusing methods. In this paper, an array guided wave ultrasonic testing system is presented including a transmitting focusing technique and flaw signal level enhancement.

MFL method is a qualitative inspection tool and is a reliable, fast and economical NDT method. The application of MFL method to the inspection of storage tank floor plates has been shown to be a viable means. Examination of tank floors previously depended primarily upon ultrasonic test methods that required slow and painstaking application. Therefor most ultrasonic inspection of storage tank has been limited to spot testing only. Our NDE group have developed magnetic flux leakage system to overcome limitation of ultrasonic test. The developed system consists of magnetic yoke, array sensor, crawler and software. It is proved that the system is able to detect artificial flaw like 3.2mm diameter, 1.2mm depth in 6mm thick steel plate.
It is necessary to guarantee the safety, serviceability and durability of reinforced concrete structures over their service life. However, concrete structures represent a decrease in their durability due to the effects of external environments according to the passage of time, and such degradation in durability can cause structural degradation in materials. In concrete structures, some degradations in durability increase the corrosion of embedded rebars and also decrease the structural performance of materials. Thus, the structural condition assessment of RC materials damaged by corrosion of rebars becomes an important factor that judges needs to apply restoration. In order to detect the damage of reinforced concrete structures, a visual inspection, a nondestructive evaluation method(NDE) and a specific loading test have been employed. However, obscurities for visual inspection and inaccessible members raise difficulty in evaluating structure condition. For these reasons, detection of location and quantification of the damage in structures via structural response have been one of the very important topics in system identification research. The main objective of this project is to develope a methodologies for the damage identification via static responses of the members damaged by durability. Six reinforced concrete beams with variables of corrosion position and corrosion width were fabricated and the damage detections of corroded RC beams were performed by the optimization and the conjugate beam methods using static deflection. In results it is proved that the conjugate beam method could predict the damage of RC members practically.

KSNPs(Korea Standard Nuclear Power Plant) have been applied the break exclusion criteria to the high energy lines passing through containment penetration area to ensure that piping failures would not cause the loss of containment isolation function, and to reduce the resulting dynamic effects. Systems with the criteria are the Main Steam system, Feed Water system, Steam Generator Blowdown system, and Chemical & Volume Control system. In accordance with FSAR(Final Safety Analysis Report), a 100% volumetric examination by augmented in-service inspection of all pipe welds appled the break exclusion criteria is required for the break exclusion application piping. However, it is difficult to fully satisfy the requirements of inspection because 12", 8" and 6" weldolet weldments of Main Steam pipe line have complex structural shapes. To resolve the difficulty on the application of conventional UT(Ultrasonic Testing) technique, realistic mock-ups and UT calibration blocks were made. Simulations of conventional UT were performed utilizing CIVA, a commercial NDE(Nondestructive Examination) simulation software. Phased array UT experiments were performed through mock-up including artificial notch type flaws. A phased array UT technique is finally developed to improve the reliability of ultrasonic test at main steam line pipe to 12", 8" and 6" branch connection weld.
