  • Hydrophobic nanodiamond (ND) were dispersed in engine oil (Helix Oil, Shell co.) as an additives to improve tribology properties. In this study, nanodiamond prepared by an explosive method was used. Tribology properties of both pure Helix oil and engine oil containing ND additive were evaluated. The rotating disks were made of Gray Cast Iron (240 Hv) and SKD11 (710 Hv). Surface topographies of the disks' wear tracks and friction coefficient were compared. The results show that nanodiamond-dispersed lubricants are capable of reducing these metals' wear loss. The friction coefficient is strongly affected to the hardness of wear track.

  • Changes of volatile flavor compounds in sesame oil during industrial process (roasting temp. $225{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, roasting time 15 min) were investigated. Total volatile flavor compounds of 1 st expressed oil from roasted sesame seeds were 536.3 ppm, and those of 2nd expressed oil from sesame seed cake, residue of 1st expression, were 266.8 ppm. Those of 1st filtered oil, fixed oil and 2nd filtered oil were 472.2 ppm, 472.4 ppm and 443.0 ppm, respectively. Volatile flavor compounds were gradually decreased during processing. Top notes $(peak{\;}No.1{\sim}26)$ playing an important role in the aromatic character of sesame oil, of 2nd expressed oil were markedly reduced (70.67% of initial content). Especially pyrazine compounds showed the largest reduction in 2nd expressed oil. Total volatile flavor compounds of fixed oil, filtered oil were reduced slightly.

  • In order to understand the relationship between the phase angle of piston ring and oil consumption was measured by analyzing $CO_2$concentration in exhaust gas. The use of hydrogen fuel not gasoline makes this possible because all of the carbon component in exhaust gas can be assumed to be produced from oil. As a result of experiment, it is known that the oil consumption varies periodically and a specific location of ring end gap was found at each peak of oil consumption. Therefore, it was found that the oil consumption was not constant even at the same operating conditions and this is because the relative locations of top and 2'nd ring end gap change arbitrarily.

  • This paper describes the fabrication of the hydrophilic magnetic fluid with high viscosity and its application to oil seal apparatus used with the Nd-permanent magnet. The results are as follows. 1) The ultrafine magnetite particles under the size of $100\;{\AA}$ are first coated by the oleic acid ion and again adsorbed by the hydrophilic D. B. S. ion, and there by hydrophilic magnetic fluid with high viscosity could be made by dispersing them into the ethylene glycol. 2) In development of the oil seal apparatus using magnetic fluid and Nd-permanent magnet, the viscosity and magnetic susceptibility show high when the $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ content is over 50%(g/cc) in the fluid, so that such properties could improve highly the capability of oil seal. 3) The maximum of the resisting pressure of the oil seal using the ethylene glycol base magnetic fluid and the Nd-permanent magnet, is about $50\;g/\textrm{cm}^2$, under the condition of this experiment. Therefore the oil seal may not be suitable for the ship engine and the driving part of the automobile, and thus it needs a lot further complementary reserch. However, it is quite favourable for such an oil seal apparatus as speed reducer under the condition of atmospheric pressure.

  • Water soluble oil was obtained by pyrolysis of biomass. The characteristics of emulsified fuel by mixing water soluble oil and MDO(marine diesel oil) and engine emissions were studied with engine dynamometer. Saw dust was used as biomass. Water soluble oil was obtained by condensing of water and carbon content with pyrolysis of saw dust at $500^{\circ}C$. Emulsion fuel was obtained by emulsifying MDO and water soluble oil by the water soluble oil mixing ratio of 10 to 20% of MDO. Exhaust gas detection was performed with engine dynamometer. While combustion, micro-explosion took place in the combustion chamber by water in the emulsion fuel, emulsion fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The heat produced from water vapour reduce the temperature of internal combustion chamber and it caused to inhibition of NOx production. It can be verified by the lower exhaust temperature of each ND-13 mode using emulsion fuel than that of MDO fuel. The NOx and smoke concentration were reduced by increasing water soluble oil content in the emulsion fuel. The power also decreased according to the increment of water soluble oil content of emulsion fuel because emulsion fuel has low calorific value due to high water content than MDO. As a result of ND-13 mode test with 20% bio oil content, it was achieved 25% reduction in NOx production, 60% reduction in smoke density, and 15% reduction in power loss.

  • The internal state of an automotive engine is very severe. A piston exposes burnt gas of over $2000^{\circ}$ nd is shocked by high pressure at the time of explosion. Furthermore strong friction is caused by high speed motion. A study on the cooling of the piston requires because the cooling and lubrication of the piston has an effect on the life and efficiency of engine directly. The previous system of oil jet cooled only the bottom of the piston. In order to improve the cooling efficiency, the oil gallery is made inside the piston, and oil flows into the oil gallery. The flow rate of oil at the entrance of oil gallery is important because of the cooling efficiency. The purpose of this study is the investigation of fluid flow characteristics of oil jet and flow rate into the oil gallery.

  • In order to examine the efficacy of concurrent vaccination with live and killed Newcastle disease(ND) vaccines two types of each live($B_1$ and LaSota) and killed(gel and oil) vaccines of all commercial origin were administered either alone or simultaneously to day-old broiler chicks having maternal antibody. Live vaccines were given by conjuntival instillation in volumes of 25${\mu}\ell$ containing $10^{6.0}$ to $10^{6.3}$ median embroy infective dose(EH)) while killed vaccines were given in 0.3$m\ell$ volumes subcutaneously at the back of the neck Hemagglutination inhibition(HI) antibodies were determined at weekly intervals until 8 weeks of age and protection rate was determined at 4 and 8 week of age by challenge inoculation with virulent ND virus(NDV). During the 8 weeks experimental period concurrent administration of live and oil vaccine produced the highest level of HI antibody and the most satisfactory protection, whereas concurrent rent vaccination with live and gel vaccine induced poor immune responses. There was no noticeable difference in the efficacy between the live vaccines, Bl and LaSota when simultaneously administered with oil vaccine. Except for oil vaccine, single administration of either live or killed vaccine at day-old produced less than 50% protection at 4 and 8 weeks postvaccination(PV). Oil vaucine alone induced 80% and 70% protection at 4 and 8 week PV, respectively. Concurrent vaccination caused on visible side reaction like respiratory symptoms and did not negatively influence the growth rate of birds until the end of experiment.

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the effect of aromatherapy on the stress response in menstrual period. Method: A randomized, single-blind, pretest- posttest design was used. The study subjects were 60 college women with dysmenorrhea and they were randomized into 3 groups, experimental, 1st control(placebo) and 2nd control group. The researchers massaged treatment oil(3% dilution essential oil of Lavender, Clary sage and Rose) into the abdomen of experimental group. The placebo group used almond oil(carrier oil) instead, and the 2nd control group did not give any treatment. Baseline data including pre-treatment stress response score were obtained on the first day of usual period. Aromatherapy provided for about 7 days until the next cycle began. Post-treatment stress responses were measured by 94 item SOS(symptom of stress) scale on the first day of the cycle. Results: As a results, the stress response score of experimental group was significantly lower than two control groups. And there was no significant difference in stress responses of two control groups. Conclusion: The results show aromatherapy using selected essential oils to be an effective intervention for stress response during menstruation.
