  • The outsole mold of the shoes has been manufactured using electro-discharge machining by graphite electrode or using casting etc. The study is concerned with the measurement of the mold of the shoes in use, the modeling by CAD/CAM system, the generation of NC data and the machining by CNC machining center. The machining has been performed from the data type obtained from 3-dimensional measurement points of mold in use. The ball end mill and the engraving cutter is used as cutter and the cutting conditions are adjusted according to the shapes and sizes of the cutter and part in cutting. The method has proposed the possibility for higher productivity and quality on mold-manufacturing of shoes outsole.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest how the machining technique of constant control of cutting speed can improve precision machining and tool life in high speed machining using a ball end mill. Cutting speed is changed in machining fee form surfaces such as connecting rod die. So, we don't have supreme surface form and tool life on machining. To solve this problem we should settle on optimal cutting speeds in free form surface machining. And, to improve precision machining, We must execute high speed machining methods to output optimum NC data using developed constant control of cutting speed program after modeling by CAD/CAM. In this paper, a comparison was made of the cutting precision and tool life in conventional cutting and those in connecting rod machining applying the program developed.

  • This paper presents a process routing (PR) algorithm with multiple objectives. PR determines the optimum sequence of operations for transforming a raw material into a completed part within the available machining resources. In any computer aided process planning (CAPP) system, selection of the machining operation sequence is one of the most critical activities for manufacturing a part and for the technical specification in the part drawing. Here, the goal could be to generate the sequence that optimizes production time, production cost, machine utilization or with multiple these criteria. The Pareto Stratum Niche Cubicle (PS NC) GA has been adopted to find the optimum sequence of operations that optimize two conflicting criteria; production cost and production quality. The numerical analysis shows that the proposed PS NC GA is both effective and efficient to the PR problem.

  • Finish machining of a curved surface is often carried out by an NC system with curve interpolation in the field. This NURBS interpolation adopts a feedrate optimizing strategy based on both the geometrical information and dynamic properties. In case of a finish cut using a ball-end mill, the curve interpolator needs to take the machining process into account for more improved surface, while reducing the polishing time. In this study, the effect of low machinability at the bottom of a tool on surface roughness is also considered. A particular curve interpolation algorithm is proposed fur generating feedrate commands which are able to control the roughness of a curved surface. The simulation of the machined surface by the proposed algorithm was carried out, and experimental results are presented.

  • This paper deals with the problem of determining small-bands enclosing a given set of points on the sphere. The small-band is a spherical region, whose boundary is composed of two circles, and which does not contain any great circle. It is a kind of domains that is derived from formalizing the local accessibility problems for 3-axis NC machining into sperical containment problems so as to avoid the grouping. It also can be generated in 4- and 5-axis machine. When a set of points U and the size of a great-band are given, the methods for computing a feasible band and all feasible bands enclosing U in O(n) and O(n log n) time have been suggested, respectively. The methods can be applied into the cases of small bands since the solution region may contain holes. In this paper, we concentrate on the method for determining the smallest small-band enclosing U and suggest an O(n long n) time algorithm, where n is the number of points on the sphere.

  • Determining tool-approach directions is an important issue when an effort is made to transfer CAD data into manufacturing automatically. An algorithm is developed to determine whether a given part can be machined on a three-axis milling machine. lf a set of feasible tool-approach directions exists for a sculptured surface, the NC tool path and G-codes for machining the surface on a three-axis milling machine can be generated automatically by an NC tool path generation algorithm. The algorithm can be used for orientation and fixturing of the workpiece for interference free machining. The algorithm can also be applied to checking the translational separability of polyhedral parts in automatic assembly.

  • In this study, the procedure of interpolation surface modeling on bicubic spline patch equation and NC machining are presented. The procedure consists of three parts : patch modeling, cutter location data generation, post processing and NC milling machining. For generation of the cutter location data, tangent vectors and units normal vectors on the patch must be calculated. In order to investigate the properties of the interpolation surface created by bicubic spline patch, two kinds of end conditions, clamped end condition and relaxed end condition, were applied in this study. The shape of the patch depends on the magnitide of the tangent vectors and twist vectors at the corners of bicubic surface patch. the patch generated by relaxed end condition more approximated to the surface patch which was given.

  • Gouge-free tool-path generation is an important issue in mold & die machining and researches on cutter interference avoidance can be found in many articles. One of the various methods is construction of tool-offlet surface or cutter-location (CL) surface on which the cutter-center point (CL-point) locates. Provided that the CL surface is represented in a suitable form, cutter-interference avoidance can be performed without the burden of computing CL data for every cutter-contact (CC) point. In the paper, various methods of constructing a CL surface in the z-map form are presented, where z-map is a special form of discrete nonparametric representation in which the height values at grid points on the xy-plane are stored as a 2D array z[i,j].
