The multi-hydrogen bonded systems with the solvated electrons are investigated at the B3LYP/6-311++$G^{**}$ basis set level. The symmetrical linear geometrical characteristic is common for the dimer systems, while for the tetramer system, the tetrahedron configuration is generated. The NBO charge analyses demonstrate that the multi-hydrogen-multi-electron (mH-ne) coupling exist in these anion systems, as is supported by the electrostatic potential and the molecular orbital analyses. The positive chemical shift value of the central hydrogen ($H_c$) and the negative chemical shift value of the terminal hydrogen ($H_t$) indicate that the $H_c$ is electronegative while the $H_t$ is electropositive, respectively. Strong coupling between two central hydrogen atoms is demonstrated by the large spin-spin coupling constants. The solvated electron donates significant contributions for the stability of these systems.
The rates of the aminolysis of S-phenyl substituted-acetate series $(RC(=O)SC_6H_4Z$, with R=Me, Et, i-Pr, t-Bu and Bn) with benzylamines $(XC_6H_4CH_2NH_2)$ are not correlated simply with the Taft's polar $({\sigma}^{\ast})$ and/or steric effect constants $(E_s)$ of the substituents due to abnormally enhanced rate of the substrate with R=Et. Furthermore, the cross-interaction constant, ${\rho}x_z$ , is the largest with R=Et. These anomalous behaviors can only be explained by invoking the vicinal bond $({\sigma})$-antibond $({\sigma}^{\ast})$ charge transfer interaction between C-$C{\alpha}$ and C-S bonds. In the tetrahedral zwitterionic intermediate, $T^{\pm}$ , formed with R=Et the vicinal ${\sigma}_{c-c}-{\sigma}^{\ast}_{c-s}$ delocalization is the strongest with an optimum antiperiplanar arrangement and a narrow energy gap, ${\Delta}{\varepsilon}={\varepsilon}_{{\sigma}^{\ast}}-{\varepsilon}_{\sigma}$. Due to this charge transfer interaction, the stability of the intermediate increases (with the concomitant increase in the equilibrium constant K (= $k_a/k_{-a}$)) and also the leaving ability of the thiophenolate leaving group increases (and hence $k_b$ increases) so that the overall rate, $k_n\;=\;Kk_b$, is strongly enhanced. Theoretical support is provided by the natural bond orbital (NBO) analyses at the B3LYP/6-31+$G^{\ast}$ level. The anomaly exhibited by R=Et attests to the stepwise reaction mechanism in which the leaving group departure is rate limiting.
In the present work, we simulated and explained the bonding of three alkanethiols - hexanethiol (HT), decanethiol (DT), and 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid (MDA) - with Fe(110) surface and Fe2 clusters using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to probe the corrosion inhibition mechanisms. The interaction energies computed from periodic DFT calculations successfully predicted the experimental inhibition performance. We have found strong covalent bond formation between S(thiol) and Fe-atoms in both approaches, further confirmed by the projected density of states and electron density difference. Besides, natural bond orbital (NBO) charge distribution showed that DT had stronger electron-donation and back-donation synergic interactions with Fe-atoms.
We demonstrate that trasition metal catalyst nanoparticle (NP) attached to carbon nitride nanotubes (CNNTs) show selective catalytic activities on hydrogen generation from the water solution including chemical hydride negative ions. The natural bonding orbitals (NBO) obtained from the first-principle calculations shows that the catalysts attached on CNNTs are quite differently polarized when they play for hydrogen generation from chemical hydride ions and hydrogen of water. For Co and Ni nanoparticles attached on CNNTs, their charges are more positively polarized when they interact with $BH_4^-Na^+$ and $H_2O$ while Pt atoms are less positively charged. In this matter, the increased positive charges on catlyst nanoparticles are proven to be more efficient in attracting hydride negative ions, thus improving hydrogen generate rates. Consequently, this result implies that these different charge polarization leads to selective catalytic activities of NPs-CNNTs. In the hydrogen generation experiments, Co-CNNTs shows the highest hydrogen generation rate when the similar amounts of catalyst nanoparticles (Co, Ni, and Pt) are dispersed on the sidewalls of CNNTs.
The aminolysis of diphenyl thiophosphinic chloride (2) with substituted anilines in acetonitrile at 55.0 oC is investigated kinetically. Kinetic results yield large Hammett ρX (ρnuc = ?3.97) and Bronsted βX (βnuc = 1.40) values. A concerted mechanism involving a partial frontside nucleophilic attack through a hydrogen-bonded, four-center type transition state is proposed on the basis of the primary normal kinetic isotope effects (kH/kD = 1.0-1.1) with deuterated aniline (XC6H4ND2) nucleophiles. The natural bond order charges on P and the degrees of distortion of 42 compounds: chlorophosphates [(R1O)(R2O)P(=O)Cl], chlorothiophosphates [(R1O)(R2O)P(=S)Cl], phosphonochloridates [(R1O)R2P(=O)Cl], phosphonochlorothioates [(R1O)R2P(=S)Cl], chlorophosphinates [R1R2P(=O)Cl], and chlorothiophosphinates [R1R2P(=S)Cl] are calculated at the B3LYP/ 6-311+G(d,p) level in the gas phase.
The benzene complexes with dimethyl sulfur (DMS) and fluorinated DMS (FDMS) have been investigated using ab initio calculations. The natural bond orbital (NBO) charge population on S atom varies remarkably for different conformations of DMS and FDMS, which determines the possible binding modes for their benzene complexes. The electronegative substituent at the methyl group of DMS causes a significant change in the molecular electrostatic potential around the sulfur atom and changes the interaction mode with aromatic ring. It was found that the sulfur…π interaction mode does not occur in the DMS-benzene complex, while it does in the FDMS-benzene complex. Both B3LYP and MP2 methods provide reliable structures, while the interaction energy obtained by B3LYP is unreliable.
A potentially tetradentate Schiff base ligand, 2-((2-((pyridin-2-ylmethylene)amino)ethyl)amino)ethan-1-ol (PMAE), and its cadmium(II) complex, [$Cd(PMAE)I_2$] (1), were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, Raman, $^1H$ and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopies and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. In the crystal structure of 1, the cadmium atom has a slightly distorted square-pyramidal geometry and a $CdN_3I_2$ environment in which the PMAE acts as an $N_3$-donor. In the crystal packing of the complex, the alcohol and amine groups of the coordinated ligands participate in hydrogen bonding with iodide ions and form $R^2{_2}(14)$ and $R^2{_2}(8)$ hydrogen bond motifs, respectively. In addition to the hydrogen bonds, the crystal network is stabilized by ${\pi}-{\pi}$ stacking interactions between pyridine rings. The thermodynamic stability of the isolated ligand and its cadmium complex along with their charge distribution patterns were studied by DFT and NBO analysis.
Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations, employing the B3LYP method and the LANL2DZ, 6-31G$^*$(LANL2DZ for Tc), 6-31G$^*$(cc-pVDZ-pp for Tc) and DGDZVP basis sets, have been performed to investigate the electronic structures and absorption spectra of the technetium-99m-labeled methylenediphosphonate ($^{99m}Tc$-MDP) complex of the simplest diphosphonate ligand. The bonding situations and natural bond orbital compositions were studied by the Mulliken population analysis (MPA) and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The results indicate that the ${\sigma}$ and ${\pi}$ contributions to the Tc-O bonds are strongly polarized towards the oxygen atoms and the ionic contribution to the Tc-O bonding is larger than the covalent contribution. The electronic transitions investigated by TDDFT calculations and molecular orbital analyses show that the origin of all absorption bands is ascribed to the ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) character. The solvent effect on the electronic structures and absorption spectra has also been studied by performing DFT and TDDFT calculations at the B3LYP/6-31G$^*$(cc-pVDZ-pp for Tc) level with the integral equation formalism polarized continuum model (IEFPCM) in different media. It is found that the absorption spectra display blue shift in different extents with the increase of solvent polarity.
Ab initio calculations are carried out on protonation equilibria of 5-memberedheteroaromatic aldehydes (5MHAs;heteroatom Y = NH, O, PH,and S and substituentZ = NH2, OCH3, SCH3, CH3, H, Cl, CHO, CN,NO2) at the $MP2}6-31G*$ level. Naturalbond orbital (NBO) analyses show that the optimal localized natural Lewis structures of the protonated aldehydes,(P), are ortho (C3) protonated (for Y = O, PH and S) and N-pro-tonated (for Y = NH) forms in contrast to the standard structural Lewis formula for aldehydes, (R). The delo-calizability of ${\pilone}-pairon$ the heteroatom $(n{\pi}(Y))$ is in the order Y = NH > O > S > PH. The transmission efficiency of (Z) substituent effects to the carbonyl moiety run parallel to the delocalizability of $n{\pi}(Y)$ for R,but is dominantly influenced by the cationic charge on $C{\alpha}(C{\alpha}+)$ for P, which is in the reverse order of thede-localizability of $n{\pi}(Y).$ The Hammett ${\rho}values$ for variation of Z in the protonation are determined by the dif-ference in the transmission efficiencies between Pand R stateat simple interpretation of their magnitude is not warranted. However, the magnitude of the gas-phase ${\rho}z+$ values decreases as the level ofcomputation is raised from RHF/3-21G* to RHF/6-31G* and to $MP2}6-31G*$ but increases again at the MP4SDQ/6-31G* level. Further decrease occurs when solvent effect (water) is accounted for by the SCRF method. Comparison of the SCRF ${\rho}z+values$ with those determined in the aqueous acid solution for Y = S and CHCH shows inadequacy of accounting for the solvent effects on the ${\rho}values$ by a continuum model. It is noteworthy that semiempirical calculations, especially theAM1 method, give even lower magnitude of the gas-phase ${\rho}values.
