The microstructure evolution during mechanical alloying (MA) of Nb and Sn powder; of average composition $Nb_3Sn$, has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD). The structural development with milling time depends on the ball size for a given powder/ball ratio. Using a larger ball of 9.5 mm diameter, the elemental powders initially alloy mechanically to form an A15 structure phase, and then amorphized with continued milling. However, in case of milling with a smaller ball of 3.968 mm diameter, an amorphous phase is first formed. These results can be understood by considering the dependence of the milling energy on the ball size. The homogeneous stoichiometric $Nb_3Sn$ phase could be easily obtained by heat treatment of supersaturated solid solution produced by MA. Heat treatment of an amorphous formed by MA resulted in the mixture of the $Nb_3Sn$ and $Nb_6Sn_5$phases.

[ $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ ] laminate composites have been successfully fabricated by alternately stacking $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ powder layer and Nb sheet, followed by hot pressing in a graphite mould. The fabricating parameters were selected as hot press temperatures. The instrumented Charpy impact test was carried out at the room temperature in order to investigate the relationship between impact properties and fabricating temperatures. The interfacial shear strength between $MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ and Nb, which is associated with the fabricating temperature and the growth of interfacial reaction layer, is also discussed. The plastic deformation of Nb sheet and the interfacial delamination were macroscopically observed. The $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites had the maximum impact value when fabricated at 1623K, accompanying the increase of fracture displacement and crack propagation energy. The interfacial shear strength of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites increased with the growth of interfacial reaction layer, which resulted from the increase of fabricating temperature. there is an appropriate interfacial shear strength for the enhancement of impact value of $Nb/MoSi_2-ZrO_2$ laminate composites. A large increase of interfacial shear strength restrains the plastic deformation of Nb sheet.
We developed a pulsed laser deposition(PLD) apparatus for depositing various thin films. In this study, the formation of $NbS_2$ thin film was performed in the vacuum chamber by PLD method. $Al_2O_3$(012) and Si(111) were used as the substrates. In order to investigate the growth conditions of a high crystalline $NbS_2$ thin film, the S/Nb composition ratio was varied from 2.0 to 5.25 and the substrate temperature was varied from the room temperature to $600^{\circ}C$. From the result of X-ray diffraction studies of the prepared $NbS_2$ thin films, it was reported that the $NbS_2$, thin film showed a good crystallinity at substrate temperature $600^{\circ}C$ and with S/Nb composition ratio 4.0 on $Al_2O_3$(012) but did not on Si(111). The films exhibited c-axis orientation.

Effect of agglomeration of $Nb_20_5$ of the same primary particle size on formation reaction and sintering of $Pb(Mg_{1/3}\;Nb_{2/3})O_3$ was examined. Both solid state reaction and molten salt synthesis were adopted. With decreasing agglomeration of $Nb_20_5$ increased the rate of formation reaction of perovskite PMN in solid state reaction, but had little influence in molten salt synthesis. It was concluded that the increase in the inhomogeneity of the dispersion state of intermediate pyrochlore with increasing agglomeration of $Nb_20_5$ retarded the formation reaction of perovskite PMN in solid state reaction, while had little influnce in molten salt synthesis due to its solution - precipitation mechanism -mainly depends on powder surface area.
It is well known that the addition of CaO-SiO$_2$to Mn-Zn ferrites forms an insulating grain bounary layer with high electrical resistivity. This study investigated the effect of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ on the electromagnetic properties of high frequency low loss Mn-Zn ferrites. The addition of 300ppm Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ developed an exaggerated grain growth while the addition of CaO-SiO$_2$addition with 200ppm Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ more effectively increased the density than that without Nb$_2$O$_{5}$. The addition of Nb$_2$O$_{5}$ showed the lower power loss below 100 ppm SiO$_2$and the Nb$_2$O$_{5}$-CaO addition lowered the power loss at higher sintering temperature.

Microstructural examination of the Nb-Si-B alloys at Nb-rich compositions is performed. The Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B system is favorable in that the constituent phases are Nb (ductile and tough phase with high melting temperature) and $T_2$ phase (very hard intermetallic compound with favorable oxidation resistance) which are good combination for high temperature structural materials. The samples containing compositions near Nb-rich corner of the Nb-Si-B ternary system are prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) process using $T_2$ and Nb powders. $T_2$ bulk phase is made in arc furnace by melting the Nb slug and the Si-B powder compact. The $T_2$ bulk phase was subsequently ball-milled to powders. SPS is performed at $1300^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$, depending on the composition, under 30 MPa for 600s, to produce disc-shaped specimen with 15 mm in diameter and 3 mm high. Hardness tests (Rockwell A-scale and micro Vickers) are carried out to estimate the mechanical property.
The surface magnetism of the CsCl structured Co binary compounds, CoX (X = Ti, V, Nb) (001) surface was studied with the calculated electronic structure data obtained by the full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FLAPW) method. The magnetic moment of the surface Co atom of the Co-terminated CoTi(001) system was $1.19{\mu}_B$, which is enhanced compared with that of the Co atom in the center layer. The magnetic moment of the surface V atom in the V terminated the CoV(001) system was $1.64{\mu}_B$, which is more than twice of the center layered V atom. The magnetic moment of surface Co atom in the Co terminated CoV(001) system has the value of $1.34{\mu}_B$, little bit smaller than the bulk value. The magnetism was disappeared in the Co terminated CoNb(001) system, and the magnetic moment of the surface Nb atom in the Nb terminated CoNb(001) system was $0.26{\mu}_B$ which is little bit decreased compared to the center layer value.

For a better understanding of the correlation between a corrosion and a microstructure, it is necessary to study a phase transformation with an annealing condition for Zr-Nb alloy. Zr-5wt.%Nb alloy with different phase characteristics was prepared with various annealing conditions. A microstructural study and corrosion test were performed to investigate the effect of a phase such as the phase type, fraction, and size on corrosion. The corrosion behavior of the Zr-5Nb alloy was very sensitive to the annealing condition, which affected the formation of the ${\beta}$-phases (${\beta}$-Nb or ${\beta}$. The corrosion rate of the Zr-5Nb alloy annealed at $500^{\circ}C$ with the formation of the ${\beta}$-Nb phase was lower than that of the Zr-5Nb alloy annealed from 600 to $800^{\circ}C$ with the formation of the ${\beta}$-Zr phase. The highest corrosion rate was observed for the ${\beta}$-quenched Zr-5Nb alloy. After a consideration of the corrosion rate and micro structure of the Zr-5Nb alloy, the corrosion resistance of that alloy was improved due to the formation of a small sized ${\beta}$-Nb phase which could be controlled by the annealing condition.

A novel low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) dielectric, composed of (1-4x)Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7-3xBi2Zn2/3Nb4/3O7-2xLiZnNbO4 (x=0.03-0.21), was synthesized through reactive liquid phase sintering of Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7-xLi2CO3 ceramic at temperatures ranging from 850℃ to 920℃ for 4 hours. During sintering, Li2CO3 reacted with Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7, resulting in the formation of Bi2Zn2/3Nb4/3O7, and LiZnNbO4. The resulting sintered body exhibited a relative sintering density exceeding 96% of the theoretical density. By altering the initial Li2CO3 content (x) and consequently modulating the volume fraction of Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7, Bi2Zn2/3Nb4/3O7, and LiZnNbO4 in the final sintered body, a sample with high dielectric constant (εr), low dielectric loss (tan δ), and the temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (TCε) characterized by NP0 specification (TCε ≤ ±30 ppm/℃) was achieved. As the Li2CO3 content increased from x=0.03 mol to x=0.15 mol, the volume fraction of Bi2Zn2/3Nb4/3O7 and LiZnNbO4 in the composite increased, while the volume fraction of Bi1.5Zn1.0Nb1.5O7 decreased. Consequently, the dielectric constant (εr) of the composite materials varied from 148.38 to 126.99, the dielectric loss (tan δ) shifted from 5.29×10-4 to 3.31×10-4, and the temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (TCε) transitioned from -340.35 ppm/℃ to 299.67 ppm/℃. A dielectric exhibiting NP0 characteristics was achieved at x=0.09 for Li2CO3, with a dielectric constant (εr) of 143.06, a dielectric loss (tan δ) value of 4.31×10-4, and a temperature coefficient of dielectric constant (TCε) value of -9.98 ppm/℃. Chemical compatibility experiment with Ag electrode revealed that the developed composite material exhibited no reactivity with the Ag electrode during the co-firing process.
Excellent deep drawability and strain aging rsistance are obtained by the addition of alloying elements such as Ti and Nb which can form carbide and nitride easily into Al killed extra low carbon steel. Recrystallization textures and mechanical properties of the three different extra low carbon steels with B containing Nb only, Ti only, and both Nb and Ti, respectively, along with have been compared. Inverse pole figure shows that (100) and (111) texture intensities of Nb containing steel changed a lot during the annealing treatment and the degree of texture-structural change in the steel containing both Nb and Ti is about the same as that in the Ti-containing 5teel. After annealing the pole figure shows that the {Ill} < 110 > and {112} < 110> textures are the strongest in the cold rolled state and the annealed state, respectively. However, there is little difference in texture structure among the three kinds of steels. There is a tendency that the steel containing both Nb and Ti the grain size of which is the smallest is the highest in hardness. Nb-containing steel is the next and Ti -containing steel is the last in hardness.
