  • Concerning to Taeku city subway construction project(1-4 site), the original design was adapted NATM Tunnel method to the 8 meter thickness of overburden. Surveyor checked sity and design material and finally decided to change into Open Cut method because overburden is not only below 1 1/2 times thickness of comparate Tunnel width but there is no traffic conjunction in job site.

A risk management system applicable to NATM tunnels: methodology development and application (NATM 터널의 리스크 관리 시스템 개발 및 현장적용)

  • In this paper, a risk management system applicable to NATM tunneling projects is proposed. After investigating case histories in NATM tunnel collapse, this paper analyzes the potential risk factors and their corresponding risk events during NATM tunnel construction. The risk factors are categorized into three groups: geological, design and construction risk factors. The risk events are also categorized into four types: excessive deformation, excessive deformation with subsidence, collapse inside tunnels, and collapse inside tunnels with subsidence. The paper identifies risk scenarios in consideration of the risk factors and proposes a risk analysis/evaluation method for the NATM tunnel risk scenarios. Based on the evaluation results, the optimal mitigation measure to handle the risk events is suggested. In order to effectively facilitate a series of risk management processes, it is necessary to develop a risk register and a management ledger for risk mitigation measures that are customized to NATM tunnels. Lastly, the risk management for an actual NATM tunnel construction site is performed to verify the validity of the proposed system.

Analysis and cause of occurrence of lining cracks on NATM tunnel based on the precise inspection for safety and diagnosis - Part I (정밀안전진단 결과를 활용한 NATM터널(무근)의 라이닝 균열 종류별 발생원인 및 분석 - Part I)

  • A crack is the main cause to affect the integrity of tunnel lining as well as leakage, spalling, exposed rebar, corrosion, carbonation and so on. Since the 1980, NATM has prevailed on excavation method and geotechnical philosophy in tunnel. Although the pattern of cracks has been reported by several engineers' effort, it was only focused on longitudinal cracks of lining. Eleven operational NATM tunnels have been conducted with the precise inspection for safety and diagnosis by KISTEC (Korea Infrastructure Safety and Technology Incorporation). With those results, the crack patterns by the spatial distribution and appearance for each tunnel have been analyzed and the cause of occurrence for seven common types of cracks in NATM tunnels was classified. Additionally, the longitudinal crack on lining above duct slab was figured out by numerical simulation and field inspection. Each crack has been analyzed by CCD (Charge-Coupled Device) scanner image with 3D configuration. Each type of cracks is also explained with output of experimental and condition of construction. Defined cracks on NATM tunnels will be good example for periodical inspection and precise inspection for safety and diagnosis.

  • In the NATM tunnel construction method for urban subway and underpass construction, various causes of disaster exist. In this study, in order to analyze the importance of disaster influencing factors during NATM tunnel excavation, the possible risk factors were analyzed through prior research such as drilling, charging and blasting, It was divided into the work items of wrinkle treatment, pumice cleanup, and support materials. Next, the final 21 detailed measurement indicators were selected through the FGI survey of related experts, and AHP (Analytic Hierarchy Process) analysis were conducted. As a result, it was found that the workers involved in the tunnel construction were the most influential disaster influencing factor.

  • The microstructures of NATM were examined by SEM, FT-IR spectra, tensile properties, mole % of [NCO/OH], and particle size analyzer. Growing concerns in the environment-friendly industries have led to the development of solvent-free formulations that can be cured. We had synthesized NATM(New Austria Tunnel Method) resin having the ability to protect stainless steel against corrosion. Comparing with general NATM resin and coatings, this resin that synthesized with polyurethane and epoxy was highly stronger in intensity and longer durability. Hybrid resin was composed of polyols, MDI, epoxy, silicone surfactant, catalyst and crosslink agent, and fillers. Moreover, fillers such as fume silica not only accelerated the curing rate but also improved the physical property as thermal barriers. The rigid segments of synthetic resin in mechanical properties were due to fume silica and the increase the mole% of [NCO/OH] for corrosion protection. In conclusion, the hybrid resin microstructure with crosslink agent and fume silica are good material for thermosetting coating of metal substrates such as stainless steel.

  • Geological and geotechnical surveys, in general, should precede the excavation to ensure the stability of the tunnel md should be followed up according to the various geological condition during the excavation. However actually the standard support patterns which were decided during the design phases used be insisted for the whole excavation phases in spite of the various geological conditions. When $\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$ tunnel was excavated up to 25m long, the severe displacement was generated in the Portal area of $\bigcirc$$\bigcirc$ tunnel and the tunnel face was pally collapsed. Therefore, this paper present the case study on construction associated with the Umbrella Arch Method used in silty ground by the NATM.

  • The paper presents the application of FE simulations of NATM tunnel using different constitutive models. The results from a series of two dimensional plane strain finite element analyses of medium-liner interaction for NATM are presented. Four types of constitutive models are considered, namely, linear elastic, elasto-plastic Mohr-Coulomb, Hardening-Soil, Soft-Soil model. The design for tunnels requires a proper estimate of surface settlement and lining forces. It is shown that the advanced constitutive model gives better predictions for both ground movement and structural forces.

  • This pre-supported nail method is able to decrease ground displacements more than NATM because this method reinforces ground with grouted steels before tunnel excavation. Therefore this method has advantage of being able to increase the stability and workability. This study presents applicability of pre-supported nail method with case of site measurement for shallow tunnel composed with high groundwater level and unconsolidated soil, performs this research the mechanism of new supporting system is compared with the conventional existing supporting system in terms of soil reinforcement. NATM has characteristics that construction stage displacement of the apparent height difference is observed in the step of divided excavation processing. Otherwise it is analyzed that pre-supported nail method is not sensitive in the displacement problem of excavation processing in comparison to NATM. It is found that this method is very applicable in shallow depth tunnel such as portal area, tunnel in soil and weak zone without arching effect.

Exposure Characteristics to Noise Among Tunnel Construction Workers (터널공사현장 근로자의 소음노출 특성 평가)

  • The noise levels of workers in tunnel sites are likely to be high because tunneling work places are confined space. However, research on the noise exposure levels of tunneling workers have not been performed intensively due to restricted accessibility to tunnel construction sites. The aim of this study is to evaluate the noise exposure levels for workers engaged in tunneling work sites. Noise dosimeters were used for monitoring workers' noise exposure level in 5 tunneling work sites in accordance with the Notification of the Ministry of Labor. Among 5 tunneling work sites, 4 of them used NATM tunneling method and 1 work site used shield TBM tunneling method. The average noise exposure levels of NATM tunneling workers was 81.1 dB(A) and 15.4 % of the workers' noise level were exposed more than 90 dB(A) which is the exposure limit value. In Shield TBM tunneling method, 4.3 % of the workers were exposed more than 90 dB(A) of noise level, the average noise exposure levels of TBM tunneling workers was 84.1 dB(A).
