  • A metal flaperon of a supersonic aircraft including the ribs, and skins was re-designed with a graphite/epoxy composite material to evaluate the weight saving effect. MSC/NASTRAN was used for the finite element analysis. The safety of the composite structures were evaluated in terms of the failure index, section cut, buckling, bearing/bypass and durability and damage tolerance analysis. After the application of the composite material, total weight saving of 25.6 pounds was achieved.

  • This report describes the procedure of detailed design and structural test for the composite flexure which is a part of the hingeless hub system. First, stacking sequence design for composite flexure was done, and structural analysis by using NASTRAN was made to verify structural stability and safety. Using FPS installed at KIMM, composite flexure was laid up and cured using a autoclave. Before rotor ground test, the basic structural tests such as a bench test, tensile strength test and shear strength test, for flexure, were accomplished. Through replacing existing metal hub part with new fabricated composite flexure, improvement of aeroelastic stability and weight reduction were achieved. This result will be applied to composite rotor system design fur helicopter.

  • As a preliminary study for the three dimensional failure analysis of composite joints, the three dimensional stress analysis on a pin-loaded unidirectional-fabric hybrid composite joints are performed. The contact and frictions between composite plate and metal bush are considered in the finite element method by NASTRAN. Experiments are conducted to validate the accuracy and feasibility of the finite element technique for 25 specimens with 5 different geometries. The finite element and experimental results show the bush cap induces the unsymmetric deformation, stress distribution, and failure behavior through the thickness. The experiment also shows the failure loads are higher in the joint with bush cap than without it.

  • The nacelle cover and nosecone are made of composite materials, especially the stiffener is added in the nacelle cover in order to enhance it's stiffness. The nacelle cover consists of all three covers of left, right side cover and upper cover and each cover is connected with bolts. Also, the nacelle cover and nacelle frame are connected with bolts. The nacelle cover and nosecone have a important role to prevent the components of nacelle and rotor from external circumstances such as snow, rain and wind. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze and evaluate the strength and deformation for them in the design level. According to GL Wind Specifications, this paper shows the results that nacelle cover of 2MW wind turbine satisfy the strength and deformation throughout analysis using Patran/Nastran programs.

  • Blast walls are integral structures at the typical offshore topside module to provide safety barriers for personnel and critical equipment against any blast loading and hydrocarbon explosions. The blast wall structures are usually configured with stainless steel. It can be referred as the good mechanical properties of the stainless steel against blast load, which features the characteristics of significant energy absorption and ductility. In this study, the proposed designs of corrugated panel are examined in order to determine the best design which satisfies the design criteria. The criteria on maximum deflection and stress are used to decide the best design. The effect of inclined angle of profile on deformation characteristics of blast wall is also performed. The numerical study was performed by using NX Nastran 7.5.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze multi-size power chuck which can chuck work pieces having various sizes automatically and be used suitably to an exclusive product line in the field of automotive industry. Gripping force, accuracy, and stiffness about the chuck are especially considered for the analysis. MSC/NASTRAN software is used for FEM analysis. Also, the effects of centrifugal force which occurs when chuck body rotates and compressive stresses which occur at contacting area in between chuck body and collet are estimated.

  • In this work, the structural response of thin-walled composite beams with pretwist angle is investigated by using a mixed beam approach that combines the stiffness and flexibility methods in a unified manner. The Reissner's semi-complimentary energy functional is used to derive the stiffness matrix that approximates the beam in an Euler-Bernoulli level for extension and bending and Vlasov level for torsion. The bending and torsion-related warpings induced by the pretwist effects are derived in a closed form. The developed theory is validated with available literature and detailed finite element structural analysis results using the MSC/NASTRAN. Pretwisted composite beams with rectangular solid and thin-walled box sections are illustrated to validate the current approach. Acceptable correlation has been achieved for cases considered in this study. The effects of pretwist and fiber orientation angles on the static behavior of pretwisted composite beams are also studied.

  • The Ferrule for the Optical Communication Connector is the product to set the optical ares of an optical fiber very precisely. Therefore, it is required high expectations such as high dimensional precision and new including flaws. Up to new the optical instrument has been used for the defeat and shape inspection of the ferrule, but in the paper we examined the detectable defeat and expectation by using Resonant Ultrasound Spectroscopy(RUS). The RUS is the measurement which is to excite specimen and to inspect the difference at natural frequency pattern between acceptable specimen and specimen which has some defeats. We analyzed the difference of natural frequency pattern in the experiment using Spectrum Analyzer. And we compared the results in the experiment with those in the simulation from the explicit finite elements code, Nastran.

  • Several design problems of composite structures are studied via a global optimizer based on attraction regions. MSC/NASTRAN is adopted for static and eigenvalue analysis. The method of modified feasible direction in DOT is used for local optimization. Through the review of global optimization algorithms, the triangular patch algorithm is selected because the algorithm is known to be efficient, robust and powerful for general nonlinear optimization problems. For general applicability, various mechanical properties are considered as design objectives; strain energy, eigenvalue, weight, displacement, and buckling load. In all cases considered, the triangular patch algorithm results in a lot of optimum points and useful design patterns, that are not easy by local algorithms or conventional global algorithms can be determined.

  • A tool holder system has been designed to measure cutting forces in diamond turning. This system includes a 3-component piezo-electric tranducer. In this research, tool holder system is modeled by considering the element dividing, material properties, and boundary conditions using MSC/PATRAN. Mode and frequency analysis of structure is simulated by MSC/NASTRAN, for the purpose of developing the effective design. In addition, tool holder system is verified by vibration test using accelerometer. This system will aid to the development of Fast Tool Servo.
