  • A series of Ni(II) and Pd(II) complexes bearing N4-type tetradentate ligands, [Ni($X^1X^2$-6-$Me_2bpb$) 1] and [Pd($X^1X^2$-6-$Me_2bpb$) 2]; 6-$Me_2bpb$ = N,N'-(o-phenylene)bis(6-methylpyridine-2-carboxamidate), $X^1$ = Cl, H, or $CH_3$, $X^2$ = $NO_2$, Cl, F, H, $CH_3$, or $OCH_3$) were designed, synthesized, and characterized to investigate electronic and steric effects of ligand on the norbornene polymerization catalysts. Using modified methylaluminoxanes as an activator, the complexes exhibited high catalytic activities for the polymerization of norbornene and the nickel complexes exhibited better catalytic activity the palladium complexes. Ni complex 1a with $NO_2$ group on the benzene ring showed the highest catalytic activity of $4.9{\times}10^6$ g of PNBEs/$mol_{Ni}{\cdot}h$ and molecular weight of $15.28{\times}10^5$ g/mol with PDI < 2.30. Complexes with electron-withdrawing groups are more thermally stable (> 100 $^{\circ}C$), and tend to afford higher polymerization productivities than the ones having electron-donating groups. Amorphous polynorbornenes were obtained with good solubility in halogenated aromatic solvents. A vinyl addition mechanism has been proposed for the catalytic polymerization.

  • Aseries of novel salen-type complexes {[Mn(III)($L_{acn}$)CI]: n=1~11} containing CI- ion were obtained by reactions of the Mn(CH$_3$COO)$_2$· 4H$_2$O with the potentially tetradentate compartmental ligand {$H$_2$L_{acn}$} prepared by condensation the of one mole of diamine {ethylenediamine, 1,3-propnediamine, o-phenylenediamine and 2,2-dimethyl-1,3-propanediamine} with two moles of aldehyde {alicylaldehyde, 5-chloro-salicylaldehyde, 3,5-dichlorosalicylaldethyde, and 3,5-di-tert-butyl-2-hydroxy-benzaldehyde} in a methanol solution. The resulting salen-type lignds and their Mn(III) complexes were identified and characterized by elemental analysis, conductivity, themogravimetry and UV-VIS, IR and NMR spectroscopy.

  • A series of homobinuclear complexes of the type [$M_2L(NO_3)_n(H_2O)_m$] where M=$UO_2$(VI), ZrO(IV), Th(IV); L=3-benzylidine-imino-5-p-sulphonamido phenyl azo-2-thiohyatoin(bispt), 3-furfurylidine-imino-5-p-sulphonamido phenyl azo-2-thiohydantoin(fispt),3-pyridyl-2'-methylene-imino-5-p-sulphonamido phenyl azo-2-thiohydantoin(pmispt) and 3-thienyl-2'-methylene-imino-5-p-sulphoanamido phenyl azo-2-thiohydantoin(tmispt); n=8 for Th(IV) and 4 for others, m=4 for bispt and 3 for others have been synthesized and characterized on the basis of elemental analysis, thermal analysis, molar conductance, magnetic moment and spectroscopic data (IR, electronic and $^1H$-NMR). In the light of this information, the ligands can be visualized as tetradentate co-ordinating through azomethine nitrogen, carbonyl oxygen to one metal centre where as azo nitrogen and thioimido nitrogen to the other metal centre yielding homo binuclear complexes of the above composition. The fungi toxicity of the ligands & their zirconyl complexes against some fungal pathogen has been studied.
