Monitoring civil structures periodically is necessary for ensuring the fitness of the structures. Cracks on inner and outer surfaces of the building plays a vital role in indicating the health of the building. Conventionally, human visual inspection techniques were carried up to human reachable altitudes. Monitoring of high rise infrastructures cannot be done using this primitive method. Also, there is a necessity for more accurate prediction of cracks on building surfaces for ensuring the health and safety of the building. The proposed research focused on developing an efficient crack classification model using Transfer Learning enabled EfficientNet (TL-EN) architecture. Though many other pre-trained models were available for crack classification, they rely on more number of training parameters for better accuracy. The TL-EN model attained an accuracy of 0.99 with less number of parameters on large dataset. A bench marked METU dataset with 40000 images were used to test and validate the proposed model. The surfaces of high rise buildings were investigated using vision enabled Unmanned Arial Vehicles (UAV). These UAV is fabricated with TL-EN model schema for capturing and analyzing the real time streaming video of building surfaces.
A simple and fast throughput flow injection (FI) system with a merging-zone technique was designed to determine ferrous and ferric in an aqueous solution. The method is based on the direct reaction of ferrous with a Bathophenanthroline reagent (Bphen) in acidic media. The forming red complex absorbs light at 533 nm. All conditions of the flow injection system were investigated. The analytical curve of ferrous was linear in the range of 0.07 to 4 mg/L with an r2 value of 0.9968. The detection and quantification limits were 0.02 and 0.04 mg/L, respectively. The molar absorptivity and Sandell's sensitivity were 4.0577 × 106 L/mol cm and 25 × 10-5 ㎍/cm2, respectively. The homemade valve was low-cost with high repeatability (n = 7) at an RSD of 1.26 % and zero dead volume. The values of the dispersion coefficient were 2.318, 2.022, and 1.636 for the concentrations of 0.2, 1, and 3 mg/L, respectively. The analysis throughput of the designed flow injection unit was 57 sample per hour.
Development in advanced separation processes leads to the significant advancement in polymeric membrane preparation methodology. Therefore, present research investigated the preparation and characterization of cellulose acetate membrane by phase inversion separation method to determine optimized operating parameters. Prepared CA membrane's performance was been analyzed in terms of % rejection and flux. Investigation was conducted to study effect of different parameters such as polymer concentration, evaporation rate, thickness of film, coagulation bath properties, temperature of polymer solution and of the coagulation bath etc. CA membrane was fabricated by taking polymer concentration 10wt% and 11wt% with zero second evaporation time and varying film thickness over non-woven polyester fabric. Effect of coagulation bath temperature (CBT) and casting solution temperature were also been studied. The experimental results from SEM showed that the surface morphology had been changed with polymer r concentration, coagulation bath and casting solution temperature, etc. Lower polymer concentration leads to lower precipitation time giving porous membrane. The prepared membrane was tested for advanced waste water treatment of relevant effluent stream in pilot plant to study flux and rejection behavior of the membrane.
This paper focuses on the energy absorption of lattice core sandwich structures of different configurations. The diamond lattice unit cell, which has been extensively investigated for energy absorption applications, is the starting point for this research. The energy absorption behaviour of sandwich structures with an expanded metal sheet as the core is investigated at low-velocity impact loading. Numerical simulations were carried out using ABAQUS/EXPLICIT and the results were thoroughly compared with the experimental results, which indicated desirable accuracy. A parametric analysis, using a Box-Behnken design (BBD), as a method for the design of experiments (DOE), was performed. The samples fabricated in three levels of parameters include 0.081, 0.145, and 0.562 mm2 Cell sizes, and 0, 45, and 90-degree cell orientation, which were investigated. It was observed from experimental data that the angle of cells orientation had the highest degree of influence on the specific energy absorption. The results showed that the angle of cells orientation has been the most influential parameter to increase the peak forces. The results from using the design expert software showed the optimal specific energy absorption and peak force to be 1786 J/kg and 26314.4 N, respectively. The obtained R2 values and normal probability plots indicated a good agreement between the experimental results and those predicted by the model.
Adhesive bonding has seen rapid development in recent years, with emphasis to composite patch repairing processes of geometric defects in aeronautical structures. However, its use is still limited given its low resistance to climatic conditions and requirement of specialized labor to avoid fabrication induced defects, such as air bubbles, cracks, and cavities. This work aims to numerically analyze, by the finite element method, the failure behavior of a damaged plate, in the form of a bonding defect, and repaired by an adhesively bonded composite patch. The position and size of the defect were studied. The results of the numerical analysis clearly showed that the position of the defect in the adhesive layer has a large effect on the value of J-Integral. The reduction in the value of J-Integral is also related to the composite stacking sequence which, according to the mechanical properties of the ply, provides better load transfer from the plate to the repair piece through the adhesive. In addition, the increase in the applied load significantly affects the value of the J-Integral at the crack tip in the presence of a bonding defect, even for small dimensions, by reducing the load transfer.
The agricultural tractor ROPS test method according to OECD code 4 is a test to assess whether the driver's safety area can be secured when a tractor overturns, and reliability should be ensured. In this study, a model formula and procedure for calculating measurement uncertainty expressing reliability in the field of agricultural machinery testing were established according to the ISO/IEC Guide 98-3:2008. The characteristics of the ROPS test device were assessed and repeated tests were performed, and the were used as factors to calculate the measurement uncertainty. As a result of repeated tests, the accuracy was higher than 1.9 % in all load directions; thus, they were, applied to calculate the type A standard uncertainty. The final expanded uncertainty was calculated within the range of less than ± 7.76 kN of force and ± 6.96 mm of deformation in all load directions.
Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research(KSTAR) device is composed of 30 superconducting magnets, magnet structure, vacuum vessel, cryostat, current feeder system, and etc. KSTAR device is operated in the cryogenic temperature and high magnetic field. We install about 800 sensors - temperature sensors, stain gages, displacement gages, hall sensors - to monitor the thermal, mechanical, electrical status of KSTAR during operation. As a tremendous numbers of sensors should be installed for monitoring the KSTAR device, the method of effective installation was developed. The sensor test was successfully carried out to check its reliability and its reproduction in the cryogenic temperature. The sensor signal is processed by PXI-based DAQ system and communicated with central control system via machine network and is shown by Operator Interface(OPI) display in the main control room. In order to safely operate the device, any violations of mechanical & superconductive characteristic of the device components were informed to its operation system & operator. If the monitored values exceed the pre-set values, the protective action should be taken against the possible damage. In this paper, the system composition, operation criteria, operation result were presented.
We describe a simple, solid-phase chemiluminescence immunoassay for the meausrement of serum T4. An immunoglobulin G fraction of antibody to thyroxine was passively absorbed onto the walls of polystyrene tubes. The labeled antigen was thyroxine-aminobutylethylisoluminol. After the bindings reaction (37$^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour), the solution is removed by aspiration and the antibody-bound fraction was washed once with buffer. Sodium hydroxide (5mol/1,200${mu}ell$) was added and the mixture incubated for 30 minutes at 6$0^{\circ}C$. Luminescence was initiated by oxidation of the label with micropeeroxidase-hydrogen peroxide and the signal of light emission was intergrated for 10 sec. The light yield was inversely proportional to the concentration of T4 in the standard or sample. An evaluation of the method gave the following values sensitivity of calibration curve 7.5$\pm$2.8 nmol/l (mean$\pm$SD). The intra-assay precision (CV%) was 8.9, 7.3 and 5.4. The inter-assay precision (CV%) was 10.2, 8.1 and 7.1. When seum samples were assayed for T4, the results obtained by solid-phase CIA and the conventional RIA agreed well(n=3.5, r=0.954).
A preliminary criticality analysis for novel pyrochemical apparatuses for the reprocessing of mixed uranium-plutonium nitride spent nuclear fuel from the BREST-OD-300 reactor was performed. High-temperature processing apparatuses, "metallization" electrolyzer, refinery remelting apparatus, refining electrolyzer, and "soft" chlorination apparatus are considered in this work. Computational models of apparatuses for two neutron radiation transport codes (MCU-FR and MCNP) were developed and calculations for criticality were completed using the Monte Carlo method. The criticality analysis was performed for different loads of fissile material into the apparatuses including overloading conditions. Various emergency situations were considered, in particular, those associated with water ingress into the chamber of the refinery remelting apparatus. It was revealed that for all the considered computational models nuclear safety rules are satisfied.
