  • Response of rice varieties Tongil, Jinheung and IR 24 to four preemergence herbicides was determined. Saturn-s [s-(4-chlorobenzyl)-N, N-diethylthiol carbamate plus 2-methylthiol-4, 6-bisethylamino-2-triazine] caused severe injury to Tongil at the high temperature and less at the higher water level, but slight injury to Jinheung and IR 24. The difference may be explained by the shallower root system of Tongil, allowing more contact with the herbicide, or different varietal metabolic rates.

  • Asymmetric membranes for pervaporation were prepared with poly sulfone and sulfonated poly sulfone in order to separate water from 90% by weight butanol solution. Chlorosulfonic acid was reacted with trimethylchlorosilane for using as a sulfonating agent. The prepared polymers were characterized with FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR. The thermal properties of the polymers were examined with DSC and TGA. Back titration method was used for the evaluation of the degree of sulfonation or the ion ex¬change capacity. N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and diethyleneglycol dimethyl ether (DGDE) cosolvent were used for the preparation of asymmetric membranes. The cross section and skin layer of the mem¬branes were examined with scanning electron michroscopy to investigate membrane structure formed with cosolvent composition in the casting solution. In this article, the selectivity of the dense films were not different from each other so much. However, the permeation rates were significantly increased as much as 80 times compared to that of dense film.

  • The PTMSP-silica-PEI composite membranes were synthesized from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and poly (1-trimethylsilyl-1-propyne) (PTMSP) by sol-gel process. The PTMSP-silica nanocomposite membranes were characterized by $^1H-NMR$, FT-IR, TGA, XPS, SEM, GPC and gas permeation measurements were accomplished with $H_2,\;O_2,\;N_2,\;CO_2,\;CH_4$. The gases permeability increased with increasing TEOS content. Both the permeability and selectivity of $H_2,\;CH_4$ increased to 15 wt% TEOS. While the permeability of $O_2,\;CO_2$ increased without decrease of selectivity.

  • In recent years, there has been highly interestedin pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method for fabrication of the organic thin films, as an alternative to conventional fabrication method such as vacuum evaporation and spin coating techniques. In this study, organic thin films of $Alq_3$ (aluminato-tris-8-hydroxyquinolate) and TPD for organic light emitting diodes (OLED) were deposited by PLD using KrF excimer ($\lambda$=278 nm) laser in nitrogen atmosphere. Deposited films were evaluated by photoluminescence(PL), Fourier-transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR) to study the effect of the laser and $N_2$ atmosphere parameters on the structural and optical properties.

  • In this study, a mesoporous carbon (CMK-3) activated using KOH was applied to the adsorption of formaldehyde, a representative indoor air pollutant. Activation process was carried out by putting KOH-treated CMK-3 in a reactor maintained at $700^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere. The activated sample was characterized using BET, XRD, XPS and FT-IR analysis. The formaldehyde adsorption performance of the mesoporous carbon was improved, which is attributed to the formation of oxygen and nitrogen functional groups on the mesoporous carbon surface by the activation process.

  • We present the sensitivity calculation results for observing the Cosmic Infrared Background (CIRB) by the Multi-purpose IR Imaging System (MIRIS), which will be launched in 2010 as a main payload of the Science and Technology Satellite 3 (STSAT-3). MIRIS will observe in I ($0.9{\sim}1.2um$) and H ($1.2{\sim}2.0um$) band with a $4{\times}4$ degree field of view to obtain the large scale structure (${\sim}3$ degree) of the CIRB. With the given specifications of the MIRIS, our sensitivity calculation results show that the MIRIS has a detection limit of ${\sim}9\;nW\;m^{-2}\;sr^{-1}$ (I band) and ${\sim}6\;nW\;m^{-2}\;sr^{-1}$ (H band), which is appropriate to observe the large scale structure of CIRB.

  • Bifunctional Fe-SBA-15-$SO_3H$ mesoporous materials with different Si/Fe molar ratios (3, 5, and 7) have been synthesized via a simple direct hydrothermal method and characterized by XRD, $N_2$-adsorption/desorption, TG/DTG and FT-IR techniques, and used as solid acid catalysts in the esterification of lactic acid with methanol. XRD and $N_2$ sorption characterizations show successful iron doping within the mesoporous channels of SBA-15-$SO_3H$. The FT-IR and TG/DTG characterizations also reveal the presence of iron. With the incorporation of Fe ions into the SBA-15-$SO_3H$, the acid sites substantially increased because of the self-separated acidity of the hydrolysis of $Fe^{3+}$ solutions. However, in the Si/Fe = 3 molar ratio, the catalytic conversion decreased which is caused by the reduced cooperation effect between the acid pairs due to the weakened hydrogen bonds and collapse of the pore structure. This further suggests that the mesoporous structure decreases with the decrease in Si/Fe ratio.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the fiber content of and the characteristics of non-fibrous matters within the textiles exhumed from Keumreung-Ri, Pajoo of Kyunggi-do. Various microscopic methods' and the IR spectroscopy were used for the identification of fibers. The KS K 0251 Test Method as well as the IR spectroscopy and the SEM were used for the analysis of econ-fibrous matters. Fiber identification showed that each of the Pajoo samples were composed either of silk, cotton, or ramie. The results of the analysis of non-fibrous matters were as follows. The amount of water-extracted compound exceeded that of chloroform-extracted compound in both Pajoo 2 and Pajoo 5 samples. In Pajoo 5 sample which have already been dry cleaned using the mixed solution of n-hexane and n-dacane, the amount of chloroform extracted compound was 0% of the total extracted matter. The enzyme and HCI disintegration steps further removed the soils those were nonsoluble in water or chloroform. The most extraction was achieved at the HCI extraction stage.
