This study aims to classify the semantic words commonly used to evaluate sound quality and to analyze their differences in reflecting the level of musical stimuli. Participants were thirty-one music majors in their 20s and 30s, with an average of 9.4 years of professional training. Each participant listened to nine pieces of music with variations in texture and instrument type and evaluated them using 18 pairs of semantic words describing sound quality. A factor analysis was conducted to group words influenced by the same latent factor, and a multivariate ANOVA determined the differences in ratings based on texture and instrument type. Radar charts were also drawn based on the identified sets of semantic words. The results showed that four factors were identified, and the word pairs 'soft-hard,' 'dull-sharp,' 'muddy-clean' and 'low-high' showed significant differences based on the level of musical stimuli. The radar charts effectively distinguished the sound quality evaluations for each music. These results indicate that developing Korean semantic words for sound quality evaluation requires a structure different from the previous categories used in Western countries and that linguistic and cultural factors are crucial. This study will provide foundational data for developing a verbal sound quality evaluation framework suited to the Korean context, while reflecting acoustic attributes in music listening.
The purpose of this study was to verify the influence of musical activities on social and emotional behavior of infants, through providing musical activities to the infants who were cared in a nursery and observing the interactions between peer group, or a therapist and an infant derived during them. The subject is 24 infants who are under 2 years of age(25~36months) at two nurseries located in Bundang area, and 13 infants among them are randomly assigned as study group and 11 infants as control group. Pretest and posttest about social and emotional behavior are performed, and ITSEA developed by Brggs-Gowan and Carter(2001) and amended by Shin Ji Yeon(2004) was used as an evaluation tool. Infants' changes of interaction behaviors during musical play were also analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively, and for the analysis, infant's social play behavior examination tool developed by Holloway and Reichhart-Erickson(1988) was adopted. Based on time sampling method, each item of this tool was evaluated. Each session was performed for 15 minutes, and 60 times of analysis about interactions per session was conducted at every 15 seconds. The analysis result was showed with a table and a graph, and described qualitatively about behavior changes. When compared social and emotional positive behavior average figures and negative behavior average figures between study group and control group, this study showed that the positive behavior figure of study group was increased and the negative behavior figure was decreased. While concentration and empathy among positive behaviors increased meaningfully, aggression, defiance, separation anxiety and rejection to new things among negative activities also decreased meaningfully. The conclusion of this study is as follows. First, interactions with peers or a therapist based on music and musical experience make an effect on strengthening positive behavior among social and emotional behavior and decreasing negative behavior. Second, music has influence on negative behaviors more than positive behaviors of an infant, and produces a good effect on sub behaviors of negative behaviors specially.
Purpose: This study was to observe the effects of music therapy on the cognitive function, behavior, and emotions of elderly dementia patients, and to seek musical mediation for them. This study was conducted with patients in the Dementia Sanitarium in C City from March 13 to April 17. Method: The design of research was a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design and the subjects were 25 patients-15 of whom were in the experimental group with 10 in the control group. The music therapy consisted of favorite music listening in the morning, favorite music group singing activity after lunch, and relaxing music listening after dinner. The schedule was followed 6 days a week for 2 weeks for a total of thirty-six session. The effect of music therapy was measured by MMSE-K and the behavior and emotion measuring equipment which had been derived by the researcher. The verification of the effects is that the score of cognitive function, behavior, and emotions of the experimental and the control group which were measured after the therapy had been applied was analyzed by descriptive statistics and t - test using SPSS WIN program. Result: 1) The degree of cognitive function of the experimental group which was received the music therapy is $11.53{\pm}5.37$ which is a little higher than the control group which is $11.20{\pm}6.32$, but it is not significant statistically (t= .14, p= .887). The first hypothesis which had assumed the recepients would have had a higher cognitive function level than the other was rejected. 2) Behavior score of the experimental group that received the music therapy is $68.90{\pm}7.86$ which is higher than the control group which is $66.40{\pm}11.13$, but it is not significant statistically(t= .61, p= .548). The second hypothesis which had assumed the recepients would have had a higher behavior level than the other was rejected. 3) Emotions score of the experimental group that received the music therapy is $42.13{\pm}5.04$ which is higher than the control group which is $35.20{\pm}6.12$, and it is significant statistically(t=3..09, p= .009). The third hypothesis which assumed the recepients would have had a higher emotion level was supported. Conclusion: music therapy which is composed of listening to music and group singing activity is an effective strategy for improvement of the emotions of the dementia elderly. But, the effect of music therapy on the cognitive function and behavior of elderly dementia patients is not significant statistically.
This study aimed to examine the current state of music therapy for adults with intellectual disabilities (ID) by conducting a survey of music therapists. Completed surveys from 32 certified music therapists were included for analysis. The questionnaire was composed of 38 items that asked about the participants' background, work environment and music therapy implementation experience (including assessment, goal establishment, intervention strategy and difficulties). The results of the study showed that music therapy for adults with ID was practiced in diverse facilities. Enhancing social interaction was the most frequently set goal by music therapists, whereas facilities mostly required the music therapy services for emotional stability. Also, instrument playing was used most among music activities, and musical structure was considered most when choosing music for therapy. Among the influential institutional factors, characteristics of the facility were considered most frequently, and the level of functioning was the most considered in terms of client-related factors. To advance the effective use of music therapy interventions with adults with ID, development of music therapy assessment tools and more active communication with facility staff were also suggested when working with this population.

The authors have considered the 1/f fluctuation of vial rhythm with $1/f\beta$ spectrum of $\alpha$ wave in relation to the invigoration for the learning memory by paid their attention to the hippocampus protocol in this paper. At the first clinical experiment, the data of the remembrance test at short period is able to make as the foundation of the repeat memory. It can replace this memory with long period memory through the hippocampus by the superposition of the same memory-nerve circuits.
Assessment in music therapy is a vital part for both the therapist and client in the process of therapy. Based on what is assessed, objectives are identified to formulate specific action procedures and strategies. The existing assessment tools involve lists of skills and behaviors in developmental domains without the music assessment protocol. In this study, the authors attempted to develop an assessment protocol using rhythm production for assessing skills in cognitive and emotional-behavior domain, namely Music Therapy Assessment for Cognitive and Emotional Behaviors (MACEB). The test items of the MACEB-Rhythm were developed using rhythmic patterns varying in terms of item difficulty, which are based on the various degree of clarity in the grouping/gestalt, saliency in part-whole relationship, and complexity in repetition vs. variability. Also the developed tool purported to examine one's level of emotional behavior trait by analyzing performance of musical parameters such as tempo, pacing, and loudness in the reproduced output. In order to verify the logical sequencing of test items, firstly 61 subjects participated in verifying the item difficulty for the selected 15 pilot items. The test items were revised and re-sequenced based on the gathered scores of item difficulty. In the second procedure, seven experts in the fields of music education, music therapy and music psychology whose research interest lie in music cognition revised the developed rhythm protocol items focusing on learning sequence, cognitive process and feasibility for skills assessment. The study attempted to provide foundations for using rhythm as an assessment protocol prior to its verification of assessment validity and reliability.
One of important goals for early childhood music learning program is to build a positive attitude toward music. Positive attitude toward music is a basic condition on effective music education for all ages of children including early childhood. Although scholars realize such importance of positive music attitude, much research for creating educational environment to foster a positive music attitude has not been performed. Edwin E. Gordon who found a music learning theory for early childhood emphasized the importance of enriched musical environment. Very young children should be provided best quality of music in an interactive way. Audie's important method of education is to provide young children with a variety of musical activities containing the materials in the ordinary life. Through this method, children accept music as close as friends who are always beside themselves, which naturally builds a solid foundation for audiation for children.
Music has a vital meaning in peoples' lives, mostly as a communication medium for thoughts and feelings. Because music is nonthreatening and nonjudgmental, its viability works for everyone. The purpose of this research is firstly to compare the effectiveness of existing social rehabilitation program and music integrated social rehabilitation program for people with mental retardation. Secondly, the study purported to find out if the music integrated social rehabilitation program was effective, then how various musical activities can assist communication and expression, and further assist social interactions among the people with mental retardation. The data were collected using Emotions Assessment Tool, Social Skills Assessment, and Skills development in Music were used. Also, verbal contents, voices, gestures, nonverbal expressions were observed and analyzed. As the result, it is shown that the music integrated social rehabilitation program has enhanced communicative and expressive skills of adults with mental retardation, and further improved social interactive skills. This implies that music had positive effects to the mental patients on their social relationship activities, than the program without music integration. The results support previous findings that music can be an effective communicative and expression tool.
The purpose of this study was to compare the vocal characteristics of 40 adults with and without cerebral palsy (CP), upon presentation of three speech tasks (i.e., reading, chanting, and singing). The Praat program was utilized to generate data on fundamental frequency, voice intensity, jitter, and shimmer. The results of the analysis revealed no significant differences on fundamental frequency and intensity. However, both groups showed significant decreases in jitter and shimmer when engaged in singing tasks. The analysis of group differences indicated that adults with CP showed significantly higher variation scores on jitter and shimmer than the group without CP, and the difference on jitter and shimmer became greater during rhythmic chanting. In terms of jitter variation, the interaction effects according to the groups and types of speech tasks were greater, demonstrating the differences between the two groups. This study can be utilized as a basic research, regarding changes in vocal characteristics of adults with CP according to different musical speech tasks.
This study was to examine music preferences of school-aged cochlear implant(CI) recipients in comparison with normal hearing(NH) children. Participants were 12 CI recipients and 155 NH children. CI children were recruited from a hospital in Seoul and they had cochlear implants for longer than two years(M = 4.7). NH children were randomly sampled. All participants were asked to respond to a questionnaire and rate their music preferences. The results showed that while 58.33% of CI recipients preferred child voices, 71.61% of NH children preferred adult voices. For preferred frequency range, both of CI and NH groups preferred higher frequency. With regard to preferred musical styles, while CI children gave the highest rating(M = 3.58) to Korean folk songs on the 5-point Likert scale, popular music and TV and soundtrack music were found to be the highest-rated styles(M = 3.83) for NH children. These results indicate that self-rated music preferences of CI recipients may be affected by a musical environment that these children have experienced. The results also implies that the provision of appropriate musical input and experiences would significantly affect future music preferences and appreciation of CI children. Providing useful information about music preferences of CI recipients in comparison with NH children, this study has significant implications for further studies on this population.
