  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of group music therapy involving the creation of a musical play on the self-esteem, self-expression, and social skills of children. The participants were 14 first through third graders and 14 fourth through sixth graders from a children's center. Half of the children from each grade band (Grades 1-3 and 4-6) were assigned to the experimental group and the other half to the control group, for a total of 14 children in each group. The experimental group who participated in music therapy sessions focused on creating a musical play. The experimental group selected themes, made a script, composed song lyrics and music, and performed the completed musical play. The Self-Esteem Scale, Self-Expression Scale, and Social Skills Rating System (SSRS) were administered before and after the intervention. The experimental group exhibited significantly higher scores than the control group on all of the scales except subscales of the Self-Expression scale and the SSRS. The results of this study suggest that group music therapy can facilitate children's engagement in group work and that playing an important role in the group can positively impact their perceptions of themselves.

(2) When one’s mind changes, there are naturally occurred sounds, which are called Oseong (五聲: the oriental five voices exhalation, laughing, singing, wailing and groaning), and the notes defined by arranging the Oseong according to the principle of Ohaeng (五行: the oriental five phases wood, fire, earth, metal, water) are Oheum (五音: the oriental five musical notes Gakeum, Chieum, Gungeum, Sangeum and Wooeum.). If Eum (musical notes) is classified into Ohaeng, it can be divided into Gakeum, Chieum, Gungeum, Sangeum and Wooeum. Many GIM practitioners have developed listening guidelines for GIM music literature, however, there needs to be a more structured guidelines and criteria for beginning GIM trainees. This paper has utilized the psychoanalytic and existential analysis of musical elements suggested by Bruscia, which focuses on the rhythmic and tonal components of musical elements. These components deal with the energy level and emotional depth embedded in the music, which are important essences in imagery experiences. The paper further reviewed various approaches of analyzing music which are musical, phenomenological, and heuristic. These approaches include both musical analysis and analyzer's subjective experiences of music. However, it is more essential firstly to understand the basic musical criteria in relation to psychoanalytic and existential aspects before going into subjective experiences of music listening for the beginning GIM trainees.

  • Background: There is a need for the development of non-verbal music therapy programs to enhance the social skills of children with intellectual disabilities who face challenges in verbal communication. Objective: The purpose of this study is to propose a music therapy program aimed at improving the social skills of children with intellectual disabilities and to evaluate its clinical effectiveness. Method: This study designed a Social Skills Training based Musical Instrument performance (SST-MIP) intervention program that integrates existing musical instrument performance and social skills in music therapy and targeted children with intellectual disabilities. Clinical effectiveness was evaluated. A total of 51 participants were randomly assigned to either the experimental group (29 participants) or the control group (22 participants). The experimental group participated in the SST-MIP intervention program once a week for 50 minutes over 32 weeks. The level of social skills of the participants was measured using the Social Skills Rating System (SSRS - teacher form, elementary level). Results: The average SSRS score of the experimental group increased by 109.2% from 10.7 to 22.4 (p <.001), while the control group showed a relatively modest increase of 30.7% from 11.3 to 14.7 (p <.05). After the SST-MIP intervention, the SSRS score of the experimental group was 57.2% higher than that of the control group, with significant improvements in specific areas of social skills: self-control (79.6%), assertion (56.8%), and cooperation (43.2%). Conclusion: The SST-MIP has been found to significantly enhance the social skills of children with intellectual disabilities. The proposed SST-MIP intervention is expected to be a useful tool for training social skills in children with intellectual disabilities who struggle with verbal communication.
