  • Recently, in content-based music information retrieval systems, to enhance the response time of retrieving music data from large music database, some researches have adopted the indexing mechanism that extracts and indexes the representative melodies. The representative melody of music data must stand for the music itself and have strong possibility to use as users' input queries. However, since the previous researches have not considered the musical composition forms, they are not able to correctly catch the contrast, repetition and variation of motif in musical forms. In this paper, we use an index automatically constructed from representative melodies such like first melody, climax melodies and similarly repeated theme melodies. At first, we expand the clustering algorithm in order to extract similarly repeated theme melodies based on the musical composition forms. If the first melody and climax melodies are not included into the representative melodies of music by the clustering algorithm, we add them into representative melodies. We implemented a prototype system and did experiments on comparison the representative melody index with other melody indexes. Since, we are able to construct the representative melody index with the lower storage by 34% than whole melody index, the response time can be decreased. Also, since we include first melody and climax melody which have the strong possibility to use as users' input query into representative melodies, we are able to get the more correct results against the various users' input queries than theme melody index with the cost of storage overhead of 20%.

  • With the development of artificial intelligence analysis methods, especially machine learning, various fields are widely expanding their application ranges. However, in the case of classical music, there still remain some difficulties in applying machine learning techniques. Genre classification or music recommendation systems generated by deep learning algorithms are actively used in general music, but not in classical music. In this paper, we attempted to classify opera among classical music. To this end, an experiment was conducted to determine which criteria are most suitable among, composer, period of composition, and emotional atmosphere, which are the basic features of music. To generate emotional labels, we adopted zero-shot classification with four basic emotions, 'happiness', 'sadness', 'anger', and 'fear.' After embedding the opera libretto with the doc2vec processing model, the optimal number of clusters is computed based on the result of the elbow method. Decided four centroids are then adopted in k-means clustering to classify unsupervised libretto datasets. We were able to get optimized clustering based on the result of adjusted rand index scores. With these results, we compared them with notated variables of music. As a result, it was confirmed that the four clusterings calculated by machine after training were most similar to the grouping result by period. Additionally, we were able to verify that the emotional similarity between composer and period did not appear significantly. At the end of the study, by knowing the period is the right criteria, we hope that it makes easier for music listeners to find music that suits their tastes.

  • According to the findings of the study, the music composition of the mask play is deeply related to the main characteristics of the scene. The first scene of the play starts with the Byeoksa dance. This particular dance part represents the evil spirit expel ritual. The instrumental accompaniment like and are played for the dance. The last part of the play starts with the Halmi and Yeonggam scene. This scene is played in both the instrumental and vocal music. For the instrumental part , for the vocal part and songs are played. and songs are played on the part of the Halmi's funeral ceremony scene. The instrumental and are played in various scenes for the accompaniment of the dance part. The musical structure of the mask play is flexible. This kind of flexibility of scene structure mainly concerned with the way of musical composition. The main structure of the mask play can be classified into two main styles according to the allocation of the vocal music. In first style, the vocal music is evenly dispersed. In second style, the vocal parts are concentrated in the rear section. As I mentioned earlier, no logical association is found in the matter of the scene arrangement. A scene arrangement has a deep connection with the arrangement of the music in each scene. In conclusion, the mixed arrangement of the scene in mask play is mainly concerned with the matter of the music arrangement in order to maintain the tension of the drama.

  • In the situation where the interest of the academics related to the Hyangje Samhyunyukgak is increasing, the task of identifying the identity of the Hyangje Samhyunyukgak should precede. In this paper, we will discuss the characteristics of the Hyangje Samhyunyukgak distinguished from the court style Samhyunyukgak. First, we will discuss the characteristics of instrument organization. In the form of the Hyangje Samhyunyukgak, the composition of the musical instrument is flexible. Depending on circumstances such as the geographic region or the composition of the player, the set of instruments were added or reduced. The second part relates to composition of music. Among the various pieces of music, a piece of music to be selected in a specific situation is music pieces related to the use of the piece of music in depth. In this phenomenon, the music with the greatest change is Geosangak(거상악). The music played as Geosangak repertoire showed various musical pieces that are related to various situations in different regions. Finally, I would like to discuss the problems related to the origins of Hyangje Samhyunyukgak music. Compared to the songs of Ginyeombul(긴염불), Gutgeori(굿거리), and Taryeong(타령), it is difficult to totally exclude the relationship from the local music genre. And I could guess that such a common denominator was closely related to the Jangdan.

  • This treatise presents that a possibility of non-musician's composition. In fart, as a development of music composition program(used by IAVA) helps to compose music easily, but non-musician still feels hard to compose some musics and perform some musics even though the band-in-a-box is already existed(which is an auto accompaniment program). This treatise shows non-musicians' special music composition way. Select a cord and put the cord to special program which ratted ‘the cord composition program’, and then the cord composition program creates the rest cords. After this progress, non-musicians overwrite their own melodies in accordance with created cords. Finally, they can perform their own musics with the sound of master-keyboard and other sound sources using by the band-in-a-box program.

  • In spite of controversial debates on aesthetic issues of computer-generated electronic music, rapid advancement of music technologies in the past decade have resulted proliferation of using virtual software synthesizers and samplers in music composition. Computer-based music production platform has become not only a norm among some of contemporary music composers but also vital apparatus for their compositional process. There are two imperative parts of this compositional process involving sampling in computer-based music production, which are commercially available sample libraries that include pre-recorded audio samples, and music production software that processes them. The purpose of this study is to investigate the process and effectiveness of reconstructive compositional process utilizing distinctive features of sampling on computer music production software. This study addresses issues such as: the definition of audio sampling, how sampling is incorporated in compositional process, and what features of music production software are particularly effective in various musical expressions. The result of this study will hopefully accommodate and fulfill the needs of electronic and acoustic musicians' creativeness.

  • In this paper, we propose an automatic melody composition system that can generate a sophisticated melody by adding non-harmony tone in the given chord progression. An overall procedure consists of two steps, which are the rhythm generation and melody generation parts. In the rhythm generation part, we designed new fitness functions for rhythm that can be controlled by a user setting parameters. In the melody generation part, we designed new fitness functions for melody based on harmony theory. We also designed evolutionary operators that are conducted by considering a musical context to improve computational efficiency. In the experiments, we compared four metaheuristics to optimize the rhythm fitness functions: Simple Genetic Algorithm (SGA), Elitism Genetic Algorithm (EGA), Differential Evolution (DE), and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Furthermore, we compared proposed genetic algorithm for melody with the four algorithms for verifying performance. In addition, composition results are introduced and analyzed with respect to musical correctness.
