Effects of Laughing and Music Therapy on Depression and Activities of the Autonomic Nervous System in the Elderly with Dementia (요양시설에 거주하는 치매노인을 위한 웃음요법과 음악요법이 우울과 자율신경활성도에 미치는 영향)

  • Purpose: This study was to identify the effects of laughing and music therapy on depression and the activities of the autonomic nervous system in the elderly with dementia. Methods: The participants were 61 seniors over 65 years old with dementia, admitted to nursing homes. Twenty of them received laughing therapy, 21 received music therapy and 18 were in the control group. A total of 59 patients' data were analyzed. Depression was measured by Cornell Scale for Depression in Dementia tool, and the activities of the autonomic nervous system by the heart rate variability measuring device. The data were analyzed by frequency and percentage, Chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, and Tukey test. Results: The depression of the music therapy group was more significantly decreased than the laughing therapy group and the control group. The activities of the autonomic nervous system of the laughing therapy group were more significantly increased than the music therapy group. The magnitude of the activities of the autonomic nervous system of the laughing therapy group were more significantly increased than the music therapy group. Conclusion: This study showed that music therapy was more effective than laughing therapy for the decrease of depression. Laughing and music therapy were more effective than in the control group for increasing the activities of the para-sympathetic nervous system and decreasing the activities of the sympathetic nerve system.

The Development and Effects of a Music Making Program Using Picture Books on Music Aptitude and Music Creativity for a Class of Five-year-old Children (만 5세 반 유아의 그림책을 활용한 음악 만들기프로그램이 음악 적성과 음악 창의성에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to develop a music making program that utilizes the characteristics of the picture books medium through the ADDIE model so that teachers can easily apply it to children, and to determine whether it affects children's musical aptitude and music creativity. Methods: The Participants of the study were 42 five-year-old children attending a daycare in Seoul, of which 20 were in the experimental group and 22 in the comparative group. The experimental group participated in a music production program using picture books, and during the same period, the comparison group participated in music activities suggested by the Nuri Course. Using the SPSS 22.0 program, average, standard deviation, independent sampling t-test, and ANCOVA(Analysis of Covariance) were calculated. Results: The music making program using picture books improved children's rhythm and tone which are the sub-items of music aptitude. The music making program enhanced children's music flexibility, music creativity, music logic which are the sub-items of music creativity. Conclusion/Implications: The music making program presented systemic teaching-learning method with which teachers explained the modeling and practiced from simple activities to various activities repeatedly in order to make teachers approach music making more easily. It is recommendable to make the music making program by using I-pad and computers.

An Analysis of the Musical Works of the Music Activities in Nuri Curriculum Guidebooks for Teachers of 3 to 5 Year Olds (『3-5세 누리과정 교사용 지도서』 음악활동에서 활용된 음악작품 분석)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine how musical pieces were presented in music activities on the Teacher's Guidebooks in order for young children to experience the aesthetics of music. For the purposes of this research, the ways to address musical elements and the music activities of 100 musical works in the Teacher's Guidebooks were analyzed. In addition, the aesthetic qualities of the same musical pieces presented by the sound sources were examined. Following this, an analysis of the relationship between the elements used and the aesthetic qualities of the music was carried out by comparing the previous analysis. The results were as follows. First, melody (38.1%), rhythm (29.0%), and timbre (20.5%) were the most utilized elements of musical works in such activities. Secondly, the most utilized method to present music activities was singing. Among 100 musical pieces, 74 pieces used singing activities. Next, the most audible aesthetic quality from sound sources was that of the melody, presented in 69 pieces (46.6%) among 100 musical works. Lastly, among 100 musical works, at least 64 pieces were matched with more than one, whereas 34 did not.

Survey on Preference of Musical Types and Activities for Improving Elderly Music Therapy (노인의 음악치료 효과 증진을 위한 음악적 유형과 활동에 대한 선호도 조사)

  • Background: There is a need for index research on music therapy activities for the elderly in Korea. Purposes: This study aims to suggest application standards in music therapy by surveying the elderly's preference for music therapy activities. Methods: A survey of music-related actions and musical instrument preferences was conducted with 91 older people in 4 nursing homes. The questionnaire consisted of information about music activities, genres of songs, types of instruments, methods of movement, and purpose of participation in activities. Results: The preference for musical activities was for playing musical instruments, followed by singing, music appreciation, flowing movements, and concert-oriented activities. Music genres appeared in the order of popular songs, folk songs, and children's songs. The instrument type preferred drums, followed by shakers and woodblocks. As a movement application method, movement using themes is preferred. Participating in music activities was leisure, followed by stress relief and emotional cultivation. Conclusion: When applying music therapy to the elderly, it predicted that the treatment effect would be high when the elderly focus on playing musical instruments and singing activities preferred by the elderly. Music genres selected from popular music and folk songs, and musical instruments are drums and shakers. Therefore, if you use it, you can expect a more significant effect.

The Effects of Music Lesson and musical and Rhythmic Activities on Young Children's Musical Abilities and Musical Conservation Concepts (유아의 음악능력과 음악보존개념의 발달 (II) - 음악교습과 음률 교육이 미치는 영향 을 중심으로-)

  • The purpose of the present study was to investigated the effects of music lesson and musical and rhythmic activities on young Children's musical abilities and musical conservation concepts. Two kinds of tests aiming to measure musical abilities and musical conservation concept were administered to 117 children aged 5- to 7-year-old. The amount of music lesson at home was investigated. and musical and rhythmic activities at two preschools were observed and them evaluated in terms of their quality . The major findings were as follows ; 1)The individual music lessons at home played a significant role in developing young children's musical abilities and musical conservation concepts. 2) Young children's musical abilities and musical conservation concepts were significantly affected by the quality of musical and rhythmic activities. Especially, the quality of musical and rhythmic activities had significant effects on listening, rhythmic activities, and musical creativity among musical abilities. As to musical conservation concepts. only tempo conservation concept was affected by the quality of musical and rhythmic activities. The balanced activities in the five domains of music education were discussed. some suggestions of improving the quality of music education were provided.

Early Childhood Teachers' Perception about Early Childhood Music Activity (유아음악활동에 대한 유아교사의 인식)

  • This study is investigating the perceptions of early childhood teachers on early childhood music activity. The subjects are early childhood teachers(N=217) working at kindergartens and day care centers in Jeonbuk Province. The data were collected from a questionnaire and analyzed with the tests of frequency, Cronbach's $\alpha$, t-test, ANOVA and Duncan. The results are as follow: first, the early childhood teachers are being aware of importance of infant music activity in the order of "aesthetic exploration", "artistic expression", and "art appreciation". Second, according to teachers' working place, the teachers have no differences of perception in early childhood music activities, while, according to children's age in the class which the teachers are taking charge of, they show differences of perception in the activities of "exploring movements " and "respect for artistic expression". Third, according to the early childhood teacher's career, they have difference of perception in "singing" activity only, while according to their education level, they have no differences of perception in all music activities. According to teachers' age, they have differences of perception in the activities of "aesthetic exploration", "exploring sound", and "singing".

The Effects of Music and Science Integrated Activities Using Instruments on the Musical Concept and Science Inquiry Process Skill (악기를 활용한 음악.과학 통합활동이 유아의 음악적 개념 및 과학적 과정기술에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper investigated the effect of music and science integrated activities using instruments designed to test both musical concept and science inquiry process skills of children. The subjects of this study consisted of two classes of children aged 5 at H Kindergarten in Busan city. This study involved a class of 31 children using a music and science integrated curriculum as the experimental group and another class of 32 children using a traditional music and science curriculum as the control group. The integrated activities were used 12 times over a 6-week period. A test was taken to evaluate the effects of the integrated activities on the children's understanding on seven sub-categories of musical concepts and six sub-categories of science inquiry process skills. The results were that the experimental group showed significantly higher improvements in all subcategories of musical concept and science inquiry process skills, compared to the control group. Based on these results, we concluded that these integrated activities were effective in the development of both musical concepts and the science inquiry process skills of children.

Effects of Musical Play Activities Based on Traditional Children's Songs upon Young Children's Musical Ability and Interest in Korean Music and Their Playfulness (전래동요에 기초한 음악놀이활동이 유아의 국악능력과 국악흥미도 놀이성에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective: This research was designed to investigate how young children's musical ability and interest in Korean music and their playfulness were affected by musical play activities based on traditional children's songs. Methods: In this study, 28 five-year-old children from W childcare center in W city were divided into an experimental and a comparison group. The experimental group then took part in musical play activities based on traditional children's songs while the comparison group, even though they sang the same songs, took part in musical activities based on themes in the 'Nuri curriculum'. The average and standard deviations of the children's musical ability and interest in Korean music and their playfulness were calculated from the collected data, and ANCOVA was computed using the pre-test scores of each subject as the covariate. Results: The results showed that taking part in musical play activities based on traditional children's songs positively affected young children's musical ability and interest in Korean music and their playfulness. Conclusion/Implications: Therefore, it is suggested that such activities could be useful components for effective Korean music programs in the field of early childhood education.

Effects of Purposeful Activities Combined with Music on Upper Extremity Function, Therapeutic Motivation, and Mood in Acute Stroke Patients (음악을 병행한 목적있는 활동이 급성기 뇌졸중 환자의 상지기능, 치료동기와 기분에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: The aim of the investigation was to identify the effects of purposeful activities combined with music on upper extremity function, motivation, and mood in acute stroke patients. Methods: For the study, 19 acute stroke inpatients were recruited at a general hospital in Korea. The patients were allocated between an experimental group (n=9) and a control group (n=10). The experimental group performed purposeful activities with their preferred music, and the control group carried out purposeful activities without music. The 2 groups received the treatments 30 min per day, 5 days per week, for 4 weeks. Measurements were taken before and after intervention, including a manual function test (MFT) for measuring upper extremity function, a volitional questionnaire (VQ) for assessing motivation, and the Beck depression inventory (BDI) and Beck anxiety inventory (BAI) for assessing mood. Results: In post-treatment measurement, both groups showed greater MFT, VQ, and BDI scores than in pre-treatment. Significantly greater VQ and BDI changes were represented in the experimental group as compared to the control group. Conclusion: Based on the findings of this study, purposeful activities combined with music have a positive effect on motivation and depression in acute stroke patients.

Child Care Teachers' Playfulness and Teaching Intention: Focusing on the Mediating Effects of Recognition of Music and Movement Activities (보육교사의 놀이성과 음률지도 적극성: 음률활동에 대한 인식의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • Objective: This study examined how child care teachers' playfulness and recognition of music and movement relate to their teaching intention of music and movement. Methods: Participants were 200 child care teachers in Seoul, Incheon and Gyeonggi areas. The data were analyzed for descriptive statistics, pearson's correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression analysis, and sobel test. Results: The main results were as follows: First, child care teachers' playfulness, teaching intention of music and movement and their recognition of music and movement were positively correlated. Second, child care teachers' playfulness influenced on their teaching intention of music and movement. Finally, teachers' recognition of music and movement mediated the relationship between teachers' playfulness and their teaching intention of music and movement. Conclusion: This study showed that teachers' playfulness influenced on their positive recognition of music and movement activities, which was the variable that caused mediation in the teachers' playfulness and their teaching attention.
