Image Making As a Planning/Design Principle: A Case Study of Andong Municipal Museum Complex (AMMC)

  • This study addressing the underlying strategies for Andong municipal museum complex development is in timely view that Andong has obtained a worldwide reputation as a treasury of traditional Korean Confucian culture. Thus far, there has been a tendency that various local museums are proposed to meet architectural aspirations architects and users commonly hold. Overall, though, the major role they play in making overall city image has not been considered in a systematic manner. Based on Lee's (2001) two previous studies, this study summarized the utility of cognitive distance and cognitive map concepts, which are proposed by Kevin Lunch (1976) to evaluate city image, in planning Andong municipal museum complex (AMMC). Sample is stratified into city residents and outsiders, and also into the general public and design-related professionals to see if there is any group difference in constructing their mental image. Three major findings are obtained. First, familiarity, so-called the degree of knowing, is the function of the length of stay in a designated area. That is, the longer people stay in Andong, the more likely they are familiar with its overall environmental aspects. Second, mental proximity of Andong municipal museum complex relative to existing cultural landmarks is closely related to the degree of how people value those landmarks in terms of their significance. Dosan Seowon and Hahoe folk village are most highly valued, which means higher proximity. Third, functional diversity turned out to be the most important design dimension, while display mechanism are least valued. Cognitive simulations of this sort are meaningful in that projected composite image might be a rough first approximation of true public image.

Evaluations of Museum Recommender System Based on Different Visitor Trip Times

  • The recommendation system applied in museums has been widely adopted owing to its advanced technology. However, it is unclear which recommendation is suitable for indoor museum guidance. This study evaluated a recommender system based on social-filtering and statistical methods applied to actual museum databases. We evaluated both methods using two different datasets. Statistical methods use collective data, whereas social methods use individual data. The results showed that both methods could provide significantly better results than random methods. However, we found that the trip time length and the dataset's sizes affect the performance of both methods. The social-filtering method provides better performance for long trip periods and includes more complex calculations, whereas the statistical method provides better performance for short trip periods. The critical points are defined to indicate the trip time for which the performances of both methods are equal.

  • During the boom of museum building in the 1970s-80s two museum wee erected in Germany. They are James Stirling's Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart and hans Hollein's Stadtisches Museum Abteiberg Monchengladbach, These two museums share the folowing point of similarity : Stirling's Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart and Hollein's Staditisches Museum Abetiberg Monchenbladbach both manifest the conditions of the times in light of their respective cities' local characters and historical contexts without being bound to traditional formality. Stirling and Hollein attempted to grasp the meaning of the 기nuseum as a city in miniature." Taking into account the t two museums’s territorial characteristics of being situated on a slope, both Stirling and Hollein made the walker to pass t through their building complex and introduced the concept of a public square within them. As a result, the museums are not j just two large buildings but are architecture composed of a collage of various structures. S Stirling’s architecture employs the method of attaching additional elements on top of basic constituents, which is suggestive '||'&'||'#61551; of the historical fragment from Shinkel's Altes Museum. On the other hand, Hollein applies a collage-style method as if he w were doing urban planning, maintaining the distinctiveness of each of the various forms and materials of buildings. T The object style buildings of the two museums actively demonstrate the contrast of double meaning to represent the a ambiguous and multifarious characteristics of the modern times. Stirling explores the theme of opposition and coexistence in h his Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart by placing a series of opposing concepts, such as the past and present and histor${\gamma}$ and t technology, in one space. Thereby, the contradiction and its appeal are manifested. Hollein made use of the visual illusion and c contradiction in alluding to the irony of the modern reality induced by nature and culture and history and technology. F For the above reasons and methods, James Stirling ’ s Neue Stattsgalerie Stuttgart allowed the penetration of art into daily l life and became the general public’s favored museum for its free and unrestrained environment. Likewise, Hans Hollein’s S Stadtisches Museum Abteiberg Moncbengladbach contribute to the development of museum function as it an expression of art i in the form of a complex piece of scupture on its own.ts own.

Study on the Production Methods and Conservation Treatment of the Gold Earrings Excavated from the Ancient Tombs in Seokchon-dong in Seoul (석촌동 고분군 출토 금제이식의 제작기법 연구 및 보존처리)

  • The Seoul Baekje Museum has been conducting excavations at the Ancient Tomb Complex in Seokchon-dong, Seoul (Historic Site No. 243), known to be tombs of the royal family and the ruling class during the Hanseong period of the Baekje Kingdom. In this study, gold earrings that were revealed during the excavation underwent scientific analysis and conservation treatment. Stereo microscopy, SEM, X-ray imaging, CT, and XRF were applied in the analysis, and the characteristics, internal structure, and composition of the earrings as well as their production method were investigated. The results confirmed that the main hoops of the gilt-bronze earrings were made of copper cores gilt using mercury amalgamation. The findings also revealed that the hexahedron in the middle pendant was made by connecting small rings using molten gold powder, and the pendant sphere at the end was formed by soldering two hemispheres. As for the two thin-hoop earrings, they showed similar surface compositions but were made using different methods, with one made from a copper core wrapped with a gold plate and the other made by bending a gold rod. The gold content varied depending on the item and the place of measurement, but overall the earrings showed a relatively high gold content of approximately 19 to 21K. The purity of the golden earrings and the sophisticated manufacturing techniques applied indicate the high status of the buried person and of the tomb complex in Seokchong-dong.

How the museum architecture has been affected by the social shift to the plural society since 1990 (다원적 사회로의 변화가 뮤지엄 건축의 공간에 미친 영향에 관한 연구)

  • Since the 18th century the museums in Europe have accepted the social demand of the publicity and have played a role of social education and it lasted to the present. Recently, the society began to change it's direction. It is from the Universalism to the Pluralism. The Universalism is due to democratic society after 'the Civil Revolution' and standardized social system after 'the Industrial Revolution' The Pluralism that starts with the decrease of the modern society is about the diversity and the activation of identity which has been disregarded since the Modernism. This study is to analyze and to clarify how the museum's educational environment which had begun since the 18th century has been changed since 1990 and how these are related to the social alteration from the Universalism to the Pluralism. As a result of this study, it was confirmed that there had been a simple circulation system and a unified spatial experience in the museum of Europe since 18th century to 1980's(phl) while there had been a complex circulation system and a diverse spatial experience in the museum of Europe after 1990's(ph2). These mean that the museum of phl gave a unified social education to the visitors and they came to have a similar knowledge and emotion after their seeing the exhibition material while the museums of 'ph2' gave a diverse one and the visitor came to have a different knowledge and emotion to the same exhibition material. The museum which gives a unified social education is to produce a unified thoughts of people and it is because the social direction is the Universalism. In addition to this, the museum of diverse social education is to produce people of diversity and it is related to the Pluralism.

  • In cases, such as white porcelain with openwork lotus scroll design, where the ceramics has intricate form and decorations, we normally use casts to restore the work, in that current restoration materials have short molding time which causes difficulties in delicate work. However, since using a cast for restoration requires longer work-time and uses more materials, we decided to restore in direct. Since the molding time in the restoration material is closely related to the workability, restoration material which secures longer work hours is necessary when directly restoring a complex form of body. Therefore we experimented on the work-time, color variation and workability as time passes by making mixtures of Epoxy putty and Baked clay in different ratios. As a result of the experiment, the mixture ratio of OS8:RQ2 turned out to be the most effective ratio.

  • The purpose of this study is to tell stories about the space of the Museom village as the Museom Byeolli Literature Museum, to recognize the importance of the local literature museum and strengthening the position of the Museom Village. For this, we analyzed the current status of the Museom Village and examined its value and meaning. Based on this theoretical review and the analysis of the subject of the study, we constructedthe Byeolli Literature Museum and made it possible for visitors to feel placeness with the story related to Jihun Joe. For this, the museum consists of a space for lovers, a space for thought, a space for consideration, and a space for healing. The space is telling the story about love, village, dining table, amusement and has maximized the space of the village which is literature contents and the background of literature work. The museum is going to be a complex cultural space where nature, culture, and literature are combined to enhance the image of the region and raise brand value.
