  • Respiration is induced by muscular contraction of the chest and abdomen, resulting in the abdominal volume change. Thus, continuous measurement of the abdominal dimension enables to monitor breathing activity. Conductive rubber cord has been previously introduced and tested to develop wearable application for respiratory measurements. This study implemented respiratory monitoring system with the conductive rubber cord in the patient's pants in purpose of quantitative estimation of tidal volume. Air mixed with $0{\sim}5%$ $CO_2$ was inhaled and the respiratory air flow rate, abdominal dimension change, and end tidal $CO_2$ concentration were simultaneously measured in steady state. $CO_2$ inhalation significantly increased the tidal volume in normal physiological state with the subject unawared. The tidal volume estimated from the abdominal dimension change linearly correlated with the tidal volume measured by a pneumotachometer with a correlation coefficient of 0.88. Customized calibration for each subject resulted in relative errors less than 10%. Therefore, the tidal volume was accurately estimated by measuring the abdominal dimension change.

  • Background: This study has conducted an experiment on 14 disabled hemiplegia (female) introduced from D rehabilitation welfare center, sorted out subjects who will enthusiastically and sincerely follow the experiment for 8 weeks (before-after), and grouped them into control group (7 people), and aquatic exercise program group (7 people). After researching the effect of application of exercise program to hemiplegia on physical function and length of lower limb, we have come to the following conclusion. In case of hemiplegia, we have concluded that aquatic exercise program can aid muscle strengthening and lower limb since aquatic exercise program activates physical function and deep muscle, showing a positive influence on muscular strength and flexibility, and a significant influence on balance of lower limb. This result is considered to make people recognize the importance of rehabilitation exercise when making a program for daily life activity, injury prevention, and treatment for hemiplegia, and we believe that such reference will be proposed as a theoretical basis for application of aquatic exercise program to hemiplegia, and further be a great aid to similar studies.

  • Objectives: To review recent findings from physiologic research about the nature of proprioceptive spinal reflex, proposed explanation for mechanisms of musculoskeletal problems associated with propriceptive dysfunction and techniques controlling this problem. Methods: MEDLINE databases were searched using various combinatins of the keywords proprioception, spinal reflex, somata-somatic reflex, spinal manipulation, muscle spindle, Golgi-tendon organ, along with searching the related articles and textbooks. Results and Conclusion: Proprioceptors(muscle spindle, Golgi-tendon organs) monitor the position of joints, tension in tendons and ligaments, and the state of muscular contraction. Disturbed activity of proprioceptive spinal reflex can cause chronic state of increased muscle stiffness, pain, deficiencies both in muscle coordination and propioception, and so on. All kinds of techniques that control proprioceptive primary afferent neurons can affect the motor control system and evoke changes in the neuromuscular system.

  • Specific inhibitors of a calcium activated neutral protease calpain could be used for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, cataract and muscular dystrophy diseases because of their therapeutic effects. In the course of screening for potential calpain inhibitors from microorganisms, a new analogue of chymostatins named calmostinol was isolated from the culture filtrate of an actinomycete. The MW was determined to be 596 [(M + H)$\^$+/] by FAB-MS in glycerol matrix. The structure was elucidated to be N-[((S)-1-carboxy-2-phenylethyl)-carbamoyl]-${\alpha}$-[2- iminohexahydro-4(S)-pyrimidyl]-L-glycyl- L-valyl-phenylalaninol, by the spectroscopic methods such as NMR and MS fragmentation studies. Calmostinol exhibited strong activity against calpain while not against a Ca$\^$2+/ -independent cysteine protease papain.

  • Making aged exercise by their age it unreasonable because there an differences of personal strength of their body. The three elements which control the aged's possibility of exercising effectivencess are the level of the physical strength in the present state, potential capacities of physical strength and age. Examined the physical strength of aged, the pliancy of body is considerably marked decline by and large and fast twitch muscle are withered. The reason why aged often do prime exercise like and infant. Aged are not fit for the speedy exercise and they can give full scope to their ability by continuing the long time exercise. The reason why aged should dwindle is mainly the retardation of recovering their fatigue which is related to the decline of oxygen activity. Anaerobic energy supply reduction makes aged be bad for severe physical exercise. Basal metabolic rate of rely on physical cellular quantity and people exercising has a high basal metabolic rate because of muscular amount. There were no decline of basal metabolic rate fellowing the age and physical non activiti influences on the atrophy of muscle.

  • Purpose: Obesity among children from low-income families is becoming a social problem. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of an obesity prevention program that included physical activity, nutrition education, behavioral modification, and primary caregiver participation components among children from low-income families. Methods: The study analyzed a nonequivalent control group using a pretest-posttest design. A total of 77 children were recruited from six community childcare centers using purposive sampling. For the intervention group (n=40), the pretest was administered before the combined intervention program involving the participants' primary caregivers was conducted for 8 weeks. The posttest was conducted immediately after the program and again four weeks after the program. Results: Flexibility (F=4.64, p=.020), muscular endurance (F=11.22, p<.001), nutritional knowledge scores (F=4.79, p=.010), body image satisfaction scores (F=4.74, p=.012), and self-esteem scores (F=3.81, p=.029) showed significant differences and interactions between group and time for the intervention and control groups. Conclusion: Strategies to actively engage the primary caregivers of low-income families in children's obesity programs are needed. Obesity prevention programs for children based on the program in this study should be routinely developed, and continuing attention should be given to children from low-income families.

  • Purpose: Sarcopenia is defined as a decrease in muscle mass, strength, and function with age that affects overall body function. We aimed to investigate the effect of combined training on body composition, balance, and muscle function in sarcopenia elderly. Research design, data, and methodology: Twenty-eight sarcopenia elderly (age 74.9±4.5 years) were randomly assigned to an exercise, EG (n=14), or a control, CG (n=14), group. The EG performed an intervention consisting of combined exercise training (60-75 min) for a total of 12 weeks, three times a week. The CG maintained their usual daily lifestyle during the intervention period. We measured body weight, body mass index (BMI), % body fat, free fat mass, balance ability, peak torque in shoulder, knee, and lumbar joints normalized for bodyweight in one second. Results: The EG showed improved body composition (i.e., BMI, fat-free body mass, fat mass; all p < 0.031, η2 > 0.179), balance (i.e., right and left of static and dynamic balance and fast 10 m walk; all p < 0.049, η2 > 0.152), and muscular function (i.e., 90°/sec and 180°/sec peak power per kg bodyweight, 90°/sec average power per kg bodyweight, 180°/sec total work, and 180°/sec endurance ratio; all p < 0.045, η2 > 0.158). Conclusions: Combined exercise training improves muscle mass and strength, body composition, balance, and muscle function in sarcopenia elderly.

  • The influences of the mandibular displacement and valium administration on the muscular activity were observed by spectrophotometric analysis of glycogen, glucose, G-6-P, lactate, pyruvate, ATP, phosphocreatine ana protein. Experimental animals were divided into three groups; the first was the mandibular displacement group, the second was valium administered group and the third was the mandibular displacement and valium admministered group. In mandibular displacement group, the high inclined plane with a gap of 2.5mm to 3.0mm between the upper and lower incisors was created by setting the silver crowns on the lower incisors. By creating such a high inclined plane, the bite was opened and the mandible was dispalced posteriorly. In valium administered group, 5mg/kg body weight of valium was administered intraperitoneally every day until the animal was sacrificed. Results were as follows: I) The body weight of all experimental rats was decreased in the beginning of experimental periods. The body weight of the mandibular displacement group showed the similar increasing rate as the control group from 15 days of experimental period. 2) The superficial masseter muscles of the mandibular displacement group appeared to be decreased it's functional activity at 36hrs, 60hrs and 96hrs of experimental periods as revealed by the decrease of various metabolites studied in this experiment. From 96hrs of experimental periods, the contents of those metabolites tended to increase up to the control level. 3) The superficial masseter muscle of 2nd group showed the decreased value of all metabolites at until 60hrs and the values were recovered to almost the same as the control at 168hrs. 4) Glycogen and G-6-P contents induced by mandibular displacement plus valium administration, showed longer duration of the decreased value than 1st group. And the decrease of glucose and pyruvate contents induced by mandibular displacement at 36hrs and 60hrs of experimental periods was enhanced by valium administration. However, the contents of lactate in 3rd group were decreased continuously until the end of experiment.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of anorexia induced by consecutive low-dose and high-dose of cisplatin (CDDP) on the hindlimb muscles of rats. Methods: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned to three groups: Control group (C) received a saline (the same dose and duration as the low CDDP group), the high-dose cisplatin (High CDDP) group received a single 5 mg/kg dose of cisplatin, the consecutive low-dose cisplatin (Low CDDP) group had 1 mg/kg of cisplatin administered for five consecutive days. On the 8th day the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles were dissected. Body weight, food intake, activity, muscle weight, Type I, II fiber cross-sectional area (CSA) of the dissected muscles were measured. Results: Body weight, food intake, muscle weight and Type I, II fiber CSA of the High CDDP and Low CDDP groups were significantly less than the C group. The High CDDP group showed significant decreases, compared to the Low CDDP group, in body weight, food intake, activity score, muscle weight and Type I, II fiber CSA. Conclusion: Hindlimb muscle atrophy occurs due to anorexia induced by both consecutive low-dose and high-dose cisplatin. The muscle atrophy induced by consecutive low-dose cisplatin is less apparent than high-dose cisplatin.

  • A muscle-specific lipase gene of the bumblebee Bombus ignitus was cloned and characterized. This gene, which we named Bi-Lipase, consists of seven exons encoding 317 amino acid residues. Bi-Lipase possesses all the features of lipases, including GXSXG consensus motif and Ser-Asp-His catalytic triad. Expressed as a 37-kDa polypeptide in baculovirus-infected insect Sf9 cells, recombinant Bi-Lipase showed an optimal pH of 9.0 and exhibited its highest catalytic activity at $40^{\circ}C$. Furthermore, through the addition of tunicamycin to the recombinant virus-infected Sf9 cells, recombinant Bi-Lipase was found to be N-glycosylated. Northern and western blot analyses indicated that Bi-Lipase was expressed in the wing, thorax, and leg muscles. These results show that Bi-Lipase is a muscle-specific lipase, suggesting a possible role of Bi-Lipase in the utilization of lipids for muscular activity in B. ignitus.
