  • The fly genus Orchisia Rondani belonging to the tribe Coenosiini of the family Muscidae, known to be distributed throughout old world, is newly recorded in Korean fauna, along with the type species O. costata (Meigen, 1826). This genus has been known to include only two species, O. costata and O. subcostata Cui, Xue et Liu, 1995. These flies can be readily distinguished by the other related taxa of the tribe Coenosiini in having prominent color pattern on wings. The Korean population has been observed on the grass vegetation at marsh area. Photographs of external features and male genitalic characters are provide.

  • Flies of the genus Lispe are large, dark gray, and have well-developed palpi. Most Lispe species are found in damp sandy and muddy environments, such as borders of marshes, seashore areas, swamps, lakes, ponds, streams, and rice paddy fields. Both adults and larvae are predators of various small aquatic insects. Previously, five species of Lispe had been identified in Korea: L. assimilis Wiedemann, 1824, L. litorea Fallén, 1825, L. orientalis Wiedemann, 1824, L. patellitarsis Becker, 1914, and L. tentaculata (DeGeer, 1776). In this paper, we record a sixth Lispe species, L. consanguinea Loew, 1858, for the first time in Korea. The diagnosis and illustrations of this species are provided in addition to a key to the Korean Lispe species.

  • Flies of the genus Lispe Latreille are widely distributed worldwide, with over 150 species recorded, of which 57 are distributed in the Palearctic region. Larvae mainly live in sandy or mudy environments, and adults are found nearby. Both adults and larvae are predators of a variety of small aquatic insects. Until now, a total of six species have been recorded in the Korean fauna. In the course of taxonomic research of Korean house flies, the authors discovered two new unrecorded species, L. leucospila (Wiedemann, 1830) and L. pygmaea Fallén, 1825. The diagnoses and illustrations of these species are provided with the key to the Korean Lispe species.

  • The total number of flies collected was 4,864 with sex ratio of 32.8% from Suseungdae area, Geochang-gun, Gyeongnam, Korea. The fauna of fly was 35 species consisting of 13 Calliphoridae, 12 Muscidae, 8 Sarcophagidae, 1 Dryomyzidae and 1 Anthomyiidae. The number of genus and species of Calliphoridae and Muscidae of Suseungdae area were similarly found in the mountain and residential areas, however, those of Sarcophagidae was similar with that of residential area. Calliphoridae was the most dominant family at the survey sites with 60.4% of the total collected flies, and followed Muscidae 33.3% and Sarcophagidae 6.2%. The dominant species were constituted of 83.6% of the total flies and the order of collected flies was Chrysomyia pinguis (42.2%), Limnophora sp. (10.8%), Muscina angustifrons (8.6%), Calliphora lata (8.1%), Fannia scalaris (5.5%), Lucilia caesar (3.9%), and Boettcherisca peregrina (4.2%). The seasonal prevalence of flies was from the middle of March to the end of November, and the peak time of appearance was the middle of June, middle of September and middle of October. The highest peak of prevalence was the middle of October. The similarity index of the flies was above 80%, compared to Mt. Geonheung and landfill in Geochang-gun. The number of fly species was more affected by the mean air temperature. In the comparison of the seasonal prevalence and relative abundance of 7 predominant species among 35 species, each species was found to exhibit its specific characteristics and showed the pattern of species.

  • Larvae of shoot flies are known to live on decaying plants or to infest the stems of wild and crop plants. Among them, some species are economically very important pests that damage fruits or cereal crops in Old world tropics and subtropics. In Korea, three species, Atherigona orientalis, A. oryzae, and A. soccata, are managed as quarantine pests. To date, a total of five species, A. (Acritochaeta) orientalis Schiner, A. (Atherigona) bifurca Suh and Kwon, A. (A.) biseta Karl, A. (A.) falcata (Thomson) and A. (A.) oryzae Malloch, including two quarantine pests, have been recorded in Korean fauna. During the survey of Korean houseflies, the authors discovered two new unrecorded species, A. (A.) miliaceae Malloch and A. (A.) reversura Villeneuve. The diagnoses and illustrations of these species are provided in addition to the key to the Korean Atherigona species.
