  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics and performance of nitrogen and phosphorus removal system, Daewoo Nutrients Removal(DNR) system, and to find out the operating parameter for the system. During the study, $10m^3$ pilot plant was operated for the demonstration experiment and the primary effluent was taken from K domestic sewage treatment plant. The TN in the influent had been removed to approximately 70% through the nitrfication in the oxic tank and the denitrfication in the anoxic tank and the $PO_4-P$ and TP in the influent had been removed to 85% and 83% through anaerobic reaction and oxic reaction. The BOD and SS removal rate were 85 to 95% through the system. As the results, the values of effluent BOD, SS and slouble phosphorus were lower than A/O and $A^2/O$ processes. The SPRR (specific phosphorus release rate) at the anaerobic state of DNR system was ranged from 2.2 to 2.6mg SP/g VSS/h. The nutrient removal efficieny of the DNR system in view of the characteristics of the domestic sewage was higher than the pre-established A/O and $A^2/O$ processes. Finally, we believe that the DNR system was superior to the processes deveolped recently.

  • It has been known that sewage containing high-concentration nitrogen affects the efficiency of municipal wastewater treatment plants harmfully. Therefore, research has been actively conducted to treat sewage containing high-concentration nitrogen. The current study has analyzed organic compounds, conducted foaming tests, and operated a laboratory-level nitritation reactor with the subjects of anaerobic digester supernatant and livestock wastewater which are the typical kinds of sewage containing high-concentration nitrogen. According to the results of analyzing organic compounds, soluble inert components form the largest part of anaerobic digester supernatant while particle biodegradable components occupy the most part of livestock wastewater. About the retention time proper for the reaction of nitritation, anaerobic digester supernatant shows 2 days while livestock wastewater indicates 6 days. It seems that the difference in the proper retention time is resulted from the difference of properties in organic compounds and ammonium nitrogen concentration. In addition, livestock wastewater's reactor foam is generated comparatively more than anaerobic digester supernatant's, but it tends to be eliminated faster. It is expected that the findings of this study can be utilized as foundational data afterwards in applying the reaction of nitritation to municipal wastewater treatment plants.

  • As the seriousness of water pollution resulted from nitrogen is being magnified, research has been conducted to reduce nitrogen in sewage as well as wastewater. Particularly research on innovative nitrogen removal methods that are based on the reaction of nitritation and are economically feasible and eco-friendly has been receiving attention. However, research on the applicability and efficiency of the methods based on the reaction of nitritation has not been completely done yet. Accordingly, the current study has analyzed the characteristics of sewage flowing into municipal wastewater treatment plants, primary clarifier supernatant, recycled water, and livestock wastewater and also operated a laboratory-level reactor. The result shows that recycled water and livestock wastewater contain higher-concentration nitrogen than other kinds of sewage, so they increase nitrogen loading in the water treatment line. And the result of operating a reactor shows that because of ammonium nitrogen low concentration, sewage and primary clarifier supernatant do not induce the reaction of nitritation. Also, there exist differences in the conditions of retention time inducing the reaction of nitritation by the types of sewage, and this seems to be attributed to organic compound and ammonium nitrogen concentration. Among the kinds of sewage inducing the reaction of nitritation, anaerobic digester supernatant indicates the highest efficiency.

  • Nitrogen is one of main causes to induce eutrophication of water system and one of contaminants that must be treated for protection of water system. In this study, it was intended to identify a method to increase operation efficiency of municipal wastewater treatment plant (MWTP) by treating high concentration nitrogen. A laboratory scale reactor was operated by using sludge thickener supernatant in the MWTP. During operation of the laboratory scale reactor, it was intended to induce stable nitritation and analyze effects of related operation factors. As results, it was shown that the nitiritation could be induced artificially through control of retention time and sections where the stable nitiritation was induced were identified also. In particular, highly efficient nitrite conversion efficiency near 90% was identified in condition of 1 day retention time. Especially, it was shown that ammonium nitrogen load affected ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency and nitrite conversion efficiency. In the condition of high ammonium nitrogen load, the nitrite conversion efficiency and the ammonium nitrogen removal efficiency decreased. On the contrary in the condition of low ammonium nitrogen load, it was found that the nitrite conversion efficiency decreased. It means that control of ammonium nitrogen concentration and its retention time is needed for the nitritation. It is considered that for the sewage containing high load nitrogen in sludge treatment process as like the sludge thickener supernatant, the nitritation can be applied, which can be suggested as a modification method of MWTP.
