  • Optical architecture and experimental results on low cost multiview autostereoscopic projection display are presented. The display, containing only one high resolution projection panel and only one projection lens is capable of displaying multiview autostereoscopic images. Key components, applied in the display are segmented mirror for splitting the projection beam and one-dimensional diffuser with slanted axis of diffusion for viewing zone formation. Image distortions, inherent in the display have been compensated with opposite sign pre-distortion of projected perspective images.

  • A three-dimensional windshield display (3D-WSD) can present driving information at the same depth as the objects in the outside scene. Herein, a super-multiview 3D-WSD is proposed because the super-multiview display technique provides smooth motion parallax. Motion parallax is the only physiological cue for perceiving the depth of a 3D image displayed at a far distance, which cannot be perceived by vergence and binocular parallax. A prototype system with 36 views was constructed, and the discontinuity of motion parallax and accuracy of depth perception were evaluated.

  • The crosstalk evaluation of multiview autostereoscopic three-dimensional (3D) displays is discussed, with both the human and technical factors investigated via image quality assessment. In the imaging performance measurements and analysis for a multiview autostereoscopic display prototype equipment, it was inferred that crosstalk would have both a positive and a negative effect on the imaging performance of the equipment. The importance of the attached diaphragm in the crosstalk evaluation was proposed and then experimentally verified, using the developed prototype equipment. The luminance distribution and crosstalk situation were given, with two different diaphragm arrays applied. The analysis results showed that the imaging performance of this 3D display system can be improved with minimum changes to the system structure.

  • In this paper, multiview calibration system for an effective 3D display is proposed. This system can be obtain 4-view image from multiview camera system. Also it can be rectify lens and camera distortion, error of bright and color, and it can be calibrate distortion of geometry. In this paper, we proposed the signal processing skill to calibrate the camera distortions which are able to take place from the acquisited multiview images. The discordance of the brightness and the colors are calibrated the color transform by extracting the feature point, correspondence point. And the difference of brightness is calibrated by using the differential map of brightness from each camera image. A spherical lens distortion is corrected by extracting the pattern of the multiview camera images. Finally the camera error and size among the multiview cameras is calibrated by removing the distortion. Accordingly, this proposed rectification & calibration system enable to effective 3D display and acquire natural multiview 3D image.

  • The relation between light sources and screen cells is considered part of the theoretical model of an autostereoscopic 3D display. The geometry of the image and observer regions is presented, including the cases of single and multiple regions. The characteristic function is introduced. Formulas for the geometric parameters are obtained, including areas and angles. Special attention is drawn to the screen location. The method of transforming the formulas between regions is stated. For multiple regions, geometric dissimilarity was found. This allows the model to be applied in finding the geometric characteristics of multiview and integral-imaging 3D displays.

  • In this paper, a new multiview stereoscopic 3D display system using a VHLS(volume holographic lenticular sheet) is suggested. The VHLS, which acts just like an optical direction modulator, can be implemented by recording the diffraction gratings corresponding each directional vector of the multiview stereoscopic images in the holographic recording material by using the angularly multiplexed recording property of the conventional volume hologram. Then, this fabricated VHLS is attached to the panel of a LCD spatial light modulator and used to diffract each of the multiview image loaded in a SLM to the corresponding spatial direction for making a 3D stereo view-zone. Accordingly, in this paper, the operational principle and characteristics of the VHLS are analyzed and an optimized 4-view VHLS is fabricated by using a commercial photopolymer. Then, a new VHLS-based 4-view stereoscopic 3D display system is implemented. Through some experimental results using a 4-view image synthesized with adaptive disparity estimation algorithm, it is suggested that implementation of a new VHLS-based multiview stereoscopic 3D display system can be possible.

  • A multiview sequence CODEC with view scaiability is proposed in this paper. We define a GGOP (Group of GOP) structure as a basic coding unit to efficiently code multiview sequences. 7he proposed CODEC provides flexible GGOP structures based on the number of views and baseline distances among cameras. Multiview sequences encode consists of disparity estimation/compensation, motion estimation/compensation, residual coding and rate control and generates multiview sequence bitstream. The main bitstream is the same as an MPEG-2 mono-sequence bitstream for MPEG-2 compatibility. The auxiliary bitstream contains information concerning the remaining multiview sequences except for the reference sequences. The proposed CODEC with view scalability provides that a number of view flints are selectively determined at the receiver according to the type of display modes. The proposed multiview sequence CODEC is tested with several multiview sequences to determine its flexibility. compatibility with MPEG-2 and view scaiability. In addition, we subjectively confirm that the decoded bitstreams with view scaiability can be Properly displayed by several types of display modes. including 3D monitors.

  • This paper presents the effects of depth map quantization for multiview intermediate image generation using depth image-based rendering (DIBR). DIBR synthesizes multiple virtual views of a 3D scene from a 2D image and its associated depth map. However, it needs precise depth information in order to generate reliable and accurate intermediate view images for use in multiview 3D display systems. Previous work has extensively studied the pre-processing of the depth map, but little is known about depth map quantization. In this paper, we conduct an experiment to estimate the depth map quantization that affords acceptable image quality to generate DIBR-based multiview intermediate images. The experiment uses computer-generated 3D scenes, in which the multiview images captured directly from the scene are compared to the multiview intermediate images constructed by DIBR with a number of quantized depth maps. The results showed that there was no significant effect on depth map quantization from 16-bit to 7-bit (and more specifically 96-scale) on DIBR. Hence, a depth map above 7-bit is needed to maintain sufficient image quality for a DIBR-based multiview 3D system.

  • Flat panel multiview 3D displays developed in recent years have pseudoscopic regions that appear unnatural to viewers. We suggest a new method to suppress the pseudoscopic regions based on the visual characteristics of binocular rivalry. We confirm the validity of this method experimentally and show that the unnaturalness caused by pseudoscopic regions can be effectively suppressed.

  • Multiview autostereoscopic three-dimensional (MA3D) displays have the disadvantage that the single-view resolution decreases as the number of views increases. Furthermore, the resolution of MA3D displays is relatively degraded, even though the resolution of two-dimensional displays has increased recently. Therefore, it is unattractive to consumers, and the single-view resolution enhancement of MA3D displays is required. In this study, we developed a method for supplementing the single-view resolution of MA3D displays using a plate beam splitter that can show two MA3D displays simultaneously. By applying our proposed method, the resolution of a single view can increase, and the visual obstruction by the optical plate, which is a problem for MA3D displays, can be solved. In addition, an MA3D display was optically designed and fabricated using a parallax barrier. Finally, the experimental optical results obtained using the proposed method and the only MA3D display were compared.
