  • Environmental issues and the need to reduce energy consumption for lowering operating costs have pushed power efficiency to become one of the major issues of current research in the field of wireless networks. This paper addresses a number of multiple input multiple output (MIMO) precoding and scheduling techniques across the PHY and MAC layers that can operate under a reduced link budget and collectively improve the transmit power efficiency of a base station, while maintaining the same levels of service. Different MIMO transmission and precoding schemes proposed for LTE, achieving varying degrees of multiuser diversity in both the time, frequency as well as the space domain, are examined. Several fairness-aware resource allocation algorithms are applied to the considered MIMO schemes and a detailed analysis of the tradeoffs between power efficiency and quality of service is presented. This paper explicitly examines the performance of a system serving real-time, VoIP traffic under different traffic loading conditions and transmit power levels. It is demonstrated that by use of efficient scheduling and resource allocation techniques significant savings in terms of consumed energy can be achieved, without compromising QoS.

  • In order to maximize the throughput and provide the fairness between users in MIMO-OFDM system, FATM(fairness-aware throughput maximization) scheduling algorithm was proposed. In this paper, a QoS-aware scheduling algorithms for MINO-OFDM system are proposed, each of which is based on FATM. These scheduling algorithms aim to satisfy the different service requirements of various service classes. Three proposed QoS scheduling algorithms called SPQ (Strict Priority Queueing), DCBQ (Delay Constraint Based Queuing), HDCBQ (Hybrid Delay Constraint Based Queuing) are compared through computer simulations. It is shown that HDCBQ algorithm outperforms other algorithms in satisfying different requirements of various service classes.

  • In mobile communication, the most exploratory technology of fifth generation is massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO). The minimum mean square error and zero forcing based linear detectors are used in multiuser detection for MIMO single-carrier frequency division multiple access (SCFDMA). When the received signal is detected and regularization sequence is joined in the equalization of spectral null amplification, these schemes experience an error performance and the signal detection assesses an inversion of a matrix computation that grows into complexity. Ordered successive interference cancelation (OSIC) detection is considered for MIMO SC-FDMA, which uses a posteriori information to eradicate these problems in a realistic environment. To cancel the interference, sorting is preferred based on signal-to-noise ratio and log-likelihood ratio. The distinctiveness of the methodology is to predict the symbol with the lowest error probability. The proposed work is compared with the existing methods, and simulation results prove that the defined algorithm outperforms conventional detection methods and accomplishes better performance with lower complication.

  • In order to improve a total system throughput when a base station (BS) transmits data to user equipments (UEs), we propose a scheme to apply multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO), space-time block coding (STBC), and non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) together. An MU-MIMO is applied to two UEs near the BS and STBC is applied to a UE far from the BS because of the difficulty of obtaining the channel information. Also NOMA is applied to differentiate the data from the near UE and the far UE. Two orthognal precoding vectors are used for the MU-MIMO UEs and it causes no interference between them. The STBC technique with the two procoding vectors are also used for the far UEs. Through performance analysis and simulation, we show that the proposed scheme has higher total system throughput than the conventional ones.

  • In this paper, we study an optimized block-diagonal zero-forcing (BD-ZF) precoder in a two-tiered cognitive network consisting of a macro cell (MC) and a small cell (SC). By exploiting multiuser multiple-input and multiple-output Vandermonde-subspace frequency-division multiplexing (VFDM) transmission, a cognitive SC can coexist with an MC. We first devise a cross-tier precoder based on the idea of VFDM to cancel the interference from the SC to the MC. Then, we propose an optimized BD-ZF intra-tier precoder (ITP) to suppress multiuser interference and maximize the throughput in the SC. In the case where the dimension of a provided null space is larger than that required by the BD-ZF ITP, the optimized BD-ZF ITP can collect all limited channel gain by optimizing rotating and selecting matrices. Otherwise, the optimized BD-ZF ITP is validated to be equivalent to the conventional BD-ZF ITP in terms of throughput. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the throughput improvement of the proposed optimized BD-ZF ITP and to discover the impact of imperfect channel state information.

  • Separating highly correlated users can reduce the loss caused by spatial correlation (SC) in multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. However, few accurate analyses of the loss caused by SC have been conducted. In this study, we define signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) loss to characterize it in multiuser multiple-input single-output (MU-MISO) systems, and use coefficient of correlation (CoC) to describe the SC between users. A formula is deduced to show the accurate relation between SINR loss and CoC. Based on this relation, we propose a user selection method that utilizes CoC to minimize the average SINR loss of users in massive MU-MISO systems. Simulation results verify the correctness of the relation and show that the proposed user selection method is very effective at reducing the loss caused by SC in massive MU-MISO systems.

  • In this paper, we analyze the symbol error rate (SER) performance of maximum likelihood (ML) joint detection in downlink multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) systems by deriving a tight union bound on the symbol error rate (SER). The union bound for ML joint detection is utilized to demonstrate the performance of MIMO MC-CDMA systems quantitatively in multiuser and frequency selective Rayleigh fading environments. An analysis of the diversity order of the systems shows the effects of multiple users, spread subcarriers, and multiple antennas on the ML joint detection performance. Furthermore, the analysis shows that MIMO MC-CDMA systems without full loading can achieve more diversify than MIMO orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems.

  • This paper considers a channel estimation scheme for millimeter-wave multiuser multiple-input multiple-output systems. According to the proposed method, parts of the beams are selected and the channel parameters are estimated according to the sparsity of channels and the orthogonality of the beams. Since the beams for each channel become distinct and the signal power increases with the increased number of antennas, the proposed approach is able to achieve good estimation performance. As a result, the sum rate can be increased in comparison with traditional approaches, and channels can be estimated with fewer pilot symbols. Numerical results verify that the proposed approach outperforms traditional approaches in cases with large numbers of antennas.

  • For multi-cell environments, coordinated random beamforming technique in multiuser MIMO(multiple-input multiple-output) broadcast channel is considered. In order to mitigate severe interference at receivers, the multi-cell environments might require complex transmitter and receiver design because the scheduler decision based on full channel state information (CSI) in one cell must be intertwined with decision made by other cells' CSI. With limited CSI, however, this paper considers a scheme of randomizing transmitters' beamforming but being coordinated with other cell transmitters. The transmitters in each cell share random beamforming patterns and schedule data transmission within coherent scheduling period. The corandomized beams allow the users to be selected with the highest SINRs even in multi-cell environments. We analyze the performance of the proposed scheme. And numerical results show that the scheme achieves better performance than the conventional random beamforming when applying to multi-cell environments.

  • This paper studies the uplink resource allocation for multiple radio access (MRA) in reconfigurable radio systems, where multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) multicarrier-code division multiple access (MC-CDMA) and MIMO orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) networks coexist. By assuming multi-radio user equipment with network-guided operation, the optimal resource allocation for MRA is analyzed as a cross-layer optimization framework with and without fairness consideration to maximize the uplink sum-rate capacity. Numerical results reveal that parallel MRA, which uses MC-CDMA and OFDMA networks concurrently, outperforms the performance of each MC-CDMA and OFDMA network by exploiting the multiuser selection diversity.
