Using an inverse of the geometric Jacobian matrix is one of the most popular ways to control robot manipulators, because the Jacobian matrix contains the relationship between joint space velocities and operational space velocities. However, the control algorithm based on Jacobian matrix has algorithmic singularities: The robot manipulator becomes unstable when the Jacobian matrix loses rank. To solve this problem, various methods such as damped and filtered inverse have been proposed, but comparative studies to evaluate the performance of these algorithms are insufficient. Thus, this paper deals with a comparative analysis of six representative singularity avoidance algorithms: Damped Pseudo Inverse, Error Damped Pseudo Inverse, Scaled Jacobian Transpose, Selectively Damped Inverse, Filtered Inverse, and Task Transition Method. Especially, these algorithms are verified through computer simulations with a virtual model of a humanoid robot, THORMANG, in order to evaluate tracking error, computational time, and multiple task performance. With the experimental results, this paper contains a deep discussion about the effectiveness and limitations of each algorithm.
This paper presents a multiple DoFs (degrees-of-freedom) prosthetic forearm and sEMG (surface electromyogram) pattern recognition and motion intent classification of forearm amputee. The developed prosthetic forearm has 9 DoFs hand and single-DoF wrist, and the socket is designed considering wearability. In addition, the pattern recognition based on sEMG is proposed for prosthetic control. Several experiments were conducted to substantiate the performance of the prosthetic forearm. First, the developed prosthetic forearm could perform various motions required for activity of daily living of forearm amputee. It was able to control according to shape and size of the object. Additionally, the amputee was able to perform 'tying up shoe' using the prosthetic forearm. Secondly, pattern recognition and classification experiments using the sEMG signals were performed to find out whether it could classify the motions according to the user's intents. For this purpose, sEMG signals were applied to the multilayer perceptron (MLP) for training and testing. As a result, overall classification accuracy arrived at 99.6% for all participants, and all the postures showed more than 97% accuracy.
With growth in intelligence of mobile robots, interaction with humans is emerging as a very important issue for mobile robots and the pedestrian tracking technique following the designated person is adopted in many cases in a way that interacts with humans. Among the existing multi-object tracking techniques for pedestrian tracking, Simple Online and Realtime Tracking (SORT) is suitable for small mobile robots that require real-time processing while having limited computational performance. However, SORT fails to reflect changes in object detection values caused by the movement of the mobile robot, resulting in poor tracking performance. In order to solve this performance degradation, this paper proposes a more stable pedestrian tracking algorithm by correcting object tracking errors caused by robot movement in real time using wheel odometry information of a mobile robot and dynamically managing the survival period of the tracker that tracks the object. In addition, the experimental results show that the proposed methodology using data collected from actual mobile robots maintains real-time and has improved tracking accuracy with resistance to the movement of the mobile robot.
The Morlet wavelet transform method is proposed to analyze a single interferogram with spatial carrier frequency that is captured by an optical interferometer. The method can retain low frequency components that contain the phase information of a measured optical surface, and remove high frequency disturbances by wavelet decomposition and reconstruction. The key to retrieving the phases from the low-frequency wavelet components is to extract wavelet ridges by calculating the maximum value of the wavelet transform amplitude. Afterwards, the wrapped phases can be accurately solved by multiple iterative calculations on wavelet ridges. Finally, we can reconstruct the wave-front of the measured optical element by applying two-dimensional discrete cosine transform to those wrapped phases. Morlet wavelet transform does not need to remove the spatial carrier frequency components manually in the processing of interferogram analysis, but the step is necessary in the Fourier transform algorithm. So, the Morlet wavelet simplifies the process of the analysis of interference fringe patterns compared to Fourier transform. Consequently, wavelet transform is more suitable for automated programming analysis of interference fringes and avoiding the introduction of additional errors compared with Fourier transform.
Simultaneous motion is essential in the activities of daily living (ADL). For motion intention recognition, surface electromyogram (sEMG) and corresponding motion label is necessary. However, this process is time-consuming and it may increase the burden of the user. Therefore, we propose a simultaneous motion recognition framework using data augmentation based on muscle activation model. The model consists of multiple point sources to be optimized while the number of point sources and their initial parameters are automatically determined. From the experimental results, it is shown that the framework has generated the data which are similar to the real one. This aspect is quantified with the following two metrics: structural similarity index measure (SSIM) and mean squared error (MSE). Furthermore, with k-nearest neighbor (k-NN) or support vector machine (SVM), the classification accuracy is also enhanced with the proposed framework. From these results, it can be concluded that the generalization property of the training data is enhanced and the classification accuracy is increased accordingly. We expect that this framework reduces the burden of the user from the excessive and time-consuming data acquisition.

An active virtual impedance algorithm is newly proposed to track a sound source and to avoid obstacles while a mobile robot is following the sound source. The tracking velocity of a mobile robot to the sound source is determined by virtual repulsive and attraction forces to avoid obstacles and to follow the sound source, respectively. Active virtual impedance is defined as a function of distances and relative velocities to the sound source and obstacles from the mobile robot, which is used to generate the tracking velocity of the mobile robot. Conventional virtual impedance methods have fixed coefficients for the relative distances and velocities. However, in this research the coefficients are dynamically adjusted to elaborate the obstacle avoidance performance in multiple obstacle environments. The relative distances and velocities are obtained using a microphone array consisting of three microphones in a row. The geometrical relationships of the microphones are utilized to estimate the relative position and orientation of the sound source against the mobile robot which carries the microphone array. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been demonstrated by real experiments.

This research proposes a vibration pattern algorithm to implement the haptic joystick to control a mobile robot at the remote site without watching the navigation environment. When the user cannot watch the navigation environment of the mobile robot, the user may rely on the haptic joystick solely to avoid obstacles and to guide the mobile robot to the target. To generate vibration patterns, there is a vibration motor at the bottom of the joystick which is held by the user to control the motion direction of the mobile robot remotely. When the mobile robot approaches to an obstacle, a pattern of vibration is generated by the motor, and by feeling the vibration pattern which is determined by the relative position of the mobile robot to the obstacle, the user can move the joystick to avoid the collision to the obstacle for the mobile robot. To generate the vibration patterns to convey the relative location of the obstacle near the mobile robot to the user, Fuzzy interferences have been utilized. To measure the distance and location of the obstacle near the mobile robot, ultrasonic sensors with the ring structure have been adopted and they are attached at the front and back sides of the mobile robot. The precise location of the obstacle is obtained by fusing the multiple data from ultrasonic sensors. Effectiveness of the proposed algorithm has been verified through the real experiments and the results are demonstrated.

Agricultural products are easily deformable its shape because of some external forces. However, these force behavior is difficult to measure quantitatively. Until now, many researches on the mechanical property was performed with various methods such as material testing, chemical analysis and non-destructive methods. In order to investigate force behavior on the cellular unit of agricultural products, electro-microscope based 3D image processing method will contribute to analysis of plant cells behavior. Before image measurement of plant cells, plant sample was cut off cross-sectioned area in a size of almost 300-400 ${\mu}$ m units using the micron thickness device, and some of preprocessing procedure was performed with fixing and dyeing. However, the wall structure of plant cell is closely neighbor each other, it is necessary to separate its boundary pixel. Therefore, image merging and shrinking algorithm was adopted to avoid disconnection. After then, boundary pixel was traced through thinning algorithm. Each image from the electro-microscope has a information of x,y position and its height along the z axis cross sectioned image plane. 3D image was constructed using the continuous image combination. Major feature was acquired from a fault image and measured area, thickness of cell wall, shape and unit cell volume. The shape of plant cell was consist of multiple facet shape. Through this measured information, it is possible to construct for structure shape of unit plant cell. This micro unit image processing techniques will contribute to the filed of agricultural mechanical property and will use to construct unit cell model of each agricultural products and information of boundary will use for finite element analysis on unit cell image.

Interactions among multiple control functions of a UPFC installed in a power system have been observed in power system simulation and been reported in authors' previous publications [1,2]. This paper presents new analytical results about these observed interactions and concludes that they are due to the control conflict between the series and shunt part of the UPFC, which are connected through the internal common capacitor inside the UPFC. Investigation in the paper reveals, for the first time as far as the authors are aware of, that the linkage pattern of UPFC series and shunt part decides whether the control functions implemented by the UPFC series and shunt part conflict each other or not. This linkage pattern of UPFC series and shunt part can be described by the flow of active power through the UPFC at steady-state operation of the power system. Hence in order to predict the possible interactions among multiple control functions of the UPFC, an interaction indicator is proposed in the paper which is the direction and amount of active power flow through the internal link of the UPFC series and shunt part at steady-state operation of the power system. This proposed interaction indicator can be calculated from power system load flow solution without having to run simulation of the power system with UPFC controllers installed. By using the indicator, the interactions among multiple control functions of the UPFC caused by badly set controller's parameters are excluded. Therefore the indicator only identifies the possible existence of inherent control conflict of the UPFC.
This paper describes a method for vision-based person identification that can detect, track, and recognize person from video using multiple cues: height and dressing colors. The method does not require constrained target's pose or fully frontal face image to identify the person. First, the system, which is connected to a pan-tilt-zoom camera, detects target using motion detection and human cardboard model. The system keeps tracking the moving target while it is trying to identify whether it is a human and identify who it is among the registered persons in the database. To segment the moving target from the background scene, we employ a version of background subtraction technique and some spatial filtering. Once the target is segmented, we then align the target with the generic human cardboard model to verify whether the detected target is a human. If the target is identified as a human, the card board model is also used to segment the body parts to obtain some salient features such as head, torso, and legs. The whole body silhouette is also analyzed to obtain the target's shape information such as height and slimness. We then use these multiple cues (at present, we uses shirt color, trousers color, and body height) to recognize the target using a supervised self-organization process. We preliminary tested the system on a set of 5 subjects with multiple clothes. The recognition rate is 100% if the person is wearing the clothes that were learned before. In case a person wears new dresses the system fail to identify. This means height is not enough to classify persons. We plan to extend the work by adding more cues such as skin color, and face recognition by utilizing the zoom capability of the camera to obtain high resolution view of face; then, evaluate the system with more subjects.
