  • In the cluster mechanism of the wireless sensor network, the network lifetime is affected by how cluster heads are selected. One of the representative clustering mechanisms, the low-energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (LEACH), selects cluster heads periodically, resulting in high energy consumption in cluster reconstruction. On the other hand, the adaptive clustering algorithm via waiting timer (ACAWT) proposes a non-periodic re-clustering mechanism that reconstructs clusters if the remaining energy level of a cluster head reaches a given threshold. In this paper, we propose a re-clustering mechanism that uses multiple remaining node energy levels and does re-clustering when the remaining energy level of a cluster head reaches one level lower. Also, in determining cluster heads, both of the number of neighbor nodes and the remaining energy level are considered so that cluster heads can be more evenly placed. From the simulations based on the Qualnet simulator, we validate that our proposed mechanism outperforms ACAWT in terms of the network lifetime.

  • As growing up of elderly population, the interesting on healthcare system in normal life using W is increasing. An integrated u-healthcare service architecture with IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.15.4 based sensor network and code divisi(m multiple access(CDMA) public mobile telecommunication networks was designed and developed. Sensor nodes with electrocardiogram(ECG), body core temperature sensors are attached on the patients' body. The healthcare parameters are transferred to web server via CDMA mobile network or through existed LAN network. The existed LAN network is suggested to be used for continuous monitoring of patient's health status in hospital while mobile networks can be used for general purpose at home or outdoor where infra networks unavailable. This system enable healthcare personal to be able to continuously access, review, monitor and transmit the patients information whereever they are, whenever they want. And immediately check their status by using cellular phone and obtain detail information by communication with medical information server through CDMA. By using this developed integrated u-healthcare service architecture, we can monitor patients' health status for 24 hours.

  • Data routing in wireless sensor networks must be energy-efficient because tiny sensor nodes have limited power. A cluster-based hierarchical routing is known to be more efficient than a flat routing because only cluster-heads communicate with a sink node. Existing hierarchical routings, however, assume unrealistically large radio transmission ranges for sensor nodes so they cannot be employed in real environments. In this paper, by considering the practical transmission ranges of the sensor nodes, we propose a clustering and routing method for hierarchical sensor networks: First, we provide the optimal ratio of cluster-heads for the clustering. Second, we propose a d-hop clustering scheme. It expands the range of clusters to d-hops calculated by the ratio of cluster-heads. Third, we present an intra-cluster routing in which sensor nodes reach their cluster-heads within d-hops. Finally, an inter-clustering routing is presented to route data from cluster-heads to a sink node using multiple hops because cluster-heads cannot communicate with a sink node directly. The efficiency of the proposed clustering and routing method is validated through extensive simulations.

  • In wireless sensor networks (WSNs), energy efficiency is one of the most essential design considerations, since sensor nodes are resource constrained. Group communication can reduce WSNs communication overhead by sending a message to multiple nodes in one packet. In this paper, in order to simultaneously resolve the transmission security and scalability in WSNs group communications, we propose a hierarchical cluster-based secure and scalable group key management scheme, called HRKT, based on logic key tree and route key tree structure. The HRKT scheme divides the group key into cluster head key and cluster key. The cluster head generates a route key tree according to the route topology of the cluster. This hierarchical key structure facilitates local secure communications taking advantage of the fact that the nodes at a contiguous place usually communicate with each other more frequently. In HRKT scheme, the key updates are confined in a cluster, so the cost of the key updates is reduced efficiently, especially in the case of massive membership changes. The security analysis shows that the HRKT scheme meets the requirements of group communication. In addition, performance simulation results also demonstrate its efficiency in terms of low storage and flexibility when membership changes massively.

  • In this paper, we present a new routing protocol, multipath and multi-priority based routing protocol, (MMRP) for wireless multimedia sensor networks. The proposed MMRP chooses the multiple routing paths from source to the sink, then the selected paths are assigned with different priority levels depending upon the residual energy and transmission delay in the routing paths. That is, the highly prioritized I frames of the MPEG video are transmitted over the high priority routing paths, and other P and B frames are transmitted over the lower priority routing paths. The proposed MMRP protocol can be applied to time critical applications which require both lower latency and low power consumption over wireless multimedia sensor network. Simulations results of MMRP protocol show respectively an improvement of 23.48% and 23.11% in energy conservation and 81.6% and 32.01% improvement in latency as compared to protocols without and with multipath routing.

  • There have been increases in the elderly population worldwide, and this has been accompanied by rapid growth in the health-care market, as there is an ongoing need to monitor the health of individuals. Wireless body area networks (WBANs) consist of wireless sensors attached on or inside the human body to monitor vital health-related problems, e.g., electrocardiograms (ECGs), electroencephalograms (EEGs), and electronystagmograms (ENGs). With WBANs, patients' vital signs are recorded by each sensor and sent to a coordinator. However, because of obstructions by the human body, sensors cannot always send the data to the coordinator, requiring them to transmit at higher power. Therefore, we need to consider the lifetime of the sensors given their required transmit power. In the IEEE 802.15.6 standard, the transmission topology functions as a one-hop star plus one topology. In order to obtain a high throughput, we reduce the transmit power of the sensors and maintain equity for all sensors. We propose the multiple-hop transmission for WBANs based on the IEEE 802.15.6 carrier-sense multiple-access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA) protocol. We calculate the throughput and variance of the transmit power by performing simulations, and we discuss the results obtained using the proposed theorems.

  • Wireless sensor network is consist of multiple sensor nodes and performs a shared tasks through the coordination of sensor nodes. Traffic in WSN is categorized as periodical monitoring traffic, event-driven traffic and query-based traffic. Periodic traffic takes significant proportion of the whole traffic processing because multiple sensor nodes generate traffic in a steady interval although the generation frequency of periodic traffic is low. In this paper, we propose a traffic control algorithm of network protocol for periodic traffic in terms of energy efficiency and conduct performance analysis of the algorithm.

  • The localization service which provides the location information of mobile user, is one of important service provided by sensor network. Many methods to obtain the location information of mobile user have been proposed. However, these methods were developed for only one mobile user so that it is hard to extend for multiple mobile users. If multiple mobile users start the localization process concurrently, there could be interference of beacon or ultrasound that each mobile user transmits. In the paper, we propose LME, the localization technique for multiple mobile nodes in mobile wireless sensor networks. In LME, collision of localization between sensor nodes is prevented by forcing the mobile node to get the permission of localization from anchor nodes. For this, we use CTS packet type for localization initiation by mobile node and RTS packet type for localization grant by anchor node. NTS packet type is uevento reject localization by anchor node for interference avoidance.nghe experimental result shows that the number of interference between nodes are increased in proportion to the number of mobile nodes and LME provides efficient localization.

  • Two-way ranging methods such as TWR and SDS-TWR have been considered for many ranging systems because these methods are useful in the absence of synchronization. To estimate the location of a mobile node, complicated ranging procedures consisting of ranging frames between an anchor node and the mobile node are performed. Supporting multiple mobile nodes such as a few hundreds or thousands and several anchor nodes, the ranging procedures have the fatal disadvantage of processing delay and inefficient traffic bandwidth. On the other hand, the one-way ranging method is simple and fast, but susceptible to network synchronization. In this paper, we propose a method to modify asynchronous ranging equations to establish exact frequency or frequency offset, a method to estimate frequencies or frequency offsets, and a method to establish post-facto synchronization with anchor nodes. The synchronization for a node pair is adapted using instantaneous time information and corresponding difference of distances can be determined. We evaluate the performance of TWR, SDS-TWR and proposed ranging algorithms.
