  • Future wireless systems will be required to support the increasingly nomadic lifestyle of people. This support will be provided through the use of multiple overlaid networks which have very different characteristics. Moreover, these networks will be required to support the seamless delivery of today's popular desktop services, such as web browsing, interactive multimedia and video conferencing to the mobile devices. Thus one of the major challenges in the design of these mobile systems will be the provision of the quality of service (QoS) guarantees that the applications demand under this diverse networking infrastructure. We believe that it is necessary to use resource reservation and adaptation techniques to deliver these QoS guarantee to applications. However, reservation and pre-configuration in the entire service region is overly aggressive, and results in schemes that are extremely inefficient and unreliable. To overcome this, the mobility pattern of a user can be exploited. If the movement of a user is known, the reservation and configuration procedure can be limited to the regions of the network a user is likely to visit. Our proposed Proxy-UMP is not sensitive to increase of the search cost than other schemes and shows that the increasing rate of total cost is low as the SMR increases.

  • The Necessity of Cyber University. Within the rapidly changing environment of global economics, the environment of higher education in the universities, also, has been, encountering various changes. Popularization on higher education related to 1lifetime education system, putting emphasis on the productivity of education services and the acquisition of competitiveness through the market of open education, the breakdown of the ivory tower and the Multiversitization of universities, importance of obtaining information in the universities, and cooperation between domestic and oversea universities, industry and educational system must be acquired. Therefore, in order to adequately cope wi th these kinds of rapid changes in the education environment, operating Cyber University by utilizing various information technologies and its fixations such as Internet, E-mail, CD-ROMs, Interact ive Video Networks (Video Conferencing, Video on Demand), TV, Cable etc., which has no time or location limitation, is needed. Using informal ion and telecommunication technologies, especially the Internet is expected to Or ing about many changes in the social, economics and educational area. Among the many changes scholars have predicted, the development and fixations of Distant Learning or Cyber University was the most dominant factor. In the case of U. S. A., Cyber University has already been established and in under operation by the Federate Governments of 13 states. Any other universities (around 500 universities has been opened until1 now), with the help of the government and private citizens have been able to partly operate the Cyber University and is planning on enlarging step-by-step in the future. It could be seen not only as U. S. A. trying to elevate its higher education through their leading information technologies, but also could be seen as their objective in putting efforts on subordinating the culture of the education worldwide. UTRA University in U. S. A., for example, is already exporting its class lectures to China, and Indonesia regions. Influenced by the Cyber University current in the U.S., the Universities in Korea is willing .to arrange various forms of Cyber Universities. In line with this, at JUNAM National University, internet based Cyber University, which has set about its work on July of 1997, is in the state of operating about 100 Cyber Universities. Also, in the case of Hanam University, the Distant Learning classes are at its final stage of being established; this is a link in the rapid speed project of setting an example by the Korean Government. In addition, the department of education has selected 5 universities, including Seoul Cyber Design University for experimentation and is in the stage of strategic operation. Over 100 universities in Korea are speeding up its preparation for operating Cyber University. This form of Distant Learning goes beyond the walls of universities and is in the trend of being diffused in business areas or in various training programs of financial organizations and more. Here, in the hope that this material would some what be of help to other Universities which are preparing for Cyber University, I would 1ike to introduce some general concepts of the components forming Cyber University and Open Education System which has been established by JUNAM University. System of Cyber University could be seen as a general solution offered by tile computer technologies for the management on the students, Lectures On Demand, real hour based and satellite classes, media product ion lab for the production of the multimedia Contents, electronic library, the Groupware enabling exchange of information between students and professors. Arranging general concepts of components in the aspect of Cyber University and Open Education, it would be expressed in the form of the establishment of Cyber University and the service of Open Education as can be seen in the diagram below.

  • This paper compares transport overhead of MPEG-2 TS, MMT and ROUTE in order to compare transport efficiency between the DTV and UHDTV. The MPEG-2 TS standard, widely used, was established for multiplexing and synchronizing encoded audio and video, additional information. In recent years, MMT and ROUTE was established as a next generation multimedia transport standard for the new broadcasting communication environment. In this paper, we compare and analyze transport overhead about three protocol. In order to analysis, we captured the UHD A/V stream in real-time broadcasting service using ROUTE and MMT, and we calculated and analyzed transport overhead using the overhead analysis program which was developed in our laboratory. Furthermore, for comparison under the same conditions, we assumed the MPEG-2 TS stream by extracting ES of UHD A/V stream based on the DTV standard. In this paper, we show the results of protocol transport efficiency in case of basic A/V stream except for additional services. And result show that MMT and ROUTE have similar overhead and MPEG-2 TS is relatively small overhead. However, since MPEG-2 TS result does not consider null packets, it is expected that the relative overhead difference will be reduced.

  • Digital TV broadcasting's resolution or tone quality is very excellent than analog broadcasting and has many advantages including various multimedia functions such as home shopping, home banking, internet search, telecommuting, VOD, etc. In this study, it is essential to analyze the regional electromagnetic environment before Digital TV broadcasting, and therefore we analyzed Busan area's limitation using ETRI propagation model. For maintaining high-quality Digital TV signals, we measure electric field intensity wide and far in Busan including mountains area and high-rise buildings. Generally, it has lower value by a standard ETRI propagation model than simulated value about standard model, but distribution pattern are similar with it. Compared theoretical values with the measured results, they have similar values for flat area but very different values for crowded city area and mountains area So we conclude that ETRI propagation model and theoretical model are not suitable for Busan in a free space.

  • In VOD server, in order to guarantee playback of continuous media, such as video, without hiccups for multiusers, the server has to manage its buffer sophisticatedly by prefeching a part of the data into the buffer As the continuous media data buffered by one user can be used again by the others, the number of disk accesses is reduced and then the latency time far the users is also reduced. In this paper, we propose a new buffer management technique for continuous media in VOD server. Our basic algorithm partitions the buffer into groups and then a group of buffer which has the lowest utilization is chosen and partitioned again for a new user. The basic algorithm is extended for supporting multiple streams and clip data and for providing VCR functions. Our proposed technique is able to increase in the number of concurrent users as increasing the utilization of the buffer and to minimize the average waiting time for multiuser accesses as the bandwidth of storage is slowly reached to the limit. In the simulation study for comparing the performance of our technique with that of the existing techniques, we show that the average waiting time is reduced mere than 50% and the number of concurrent users increases by 1 ∼5% as compared with those of the exiting techniques.

  • Product-line engineering is a dreaming goal in software engineering research. Unfortunately, the current underlying technologies do not seem to be still not much matured enough to make it viable in the industry. Based on our experiences in working on mobile telephony systems over 3 years, now we are in the course of developing an approach to product-line engineering for mobile telephony system software. In this paper, the experiences are shared together with our research motivation and idea. Consequently, we propose an approach to building and maintaining telephony application logics from the perspective of scenes. As a Domain-Specific Language(DSL), Menu Navigation Viewpoint(MNV) DSL is designed to deal with the problem domain of telephony applications. The functional requirements on how a set of telephony application logics are configured can be so various depending on manufacturer, product concept, service carrier, and so on. However, there is a commonality that all of the currently used telephony application logics can be generally described from the point of user's view, with a set of functional features that can be combinatorially synthesized from typical telephony services(i.e. voice/video telephony, CBS/SMS/MMS, address book, data connection, camera/multimedia, web browsing, etc.), and their possible connectivity. MNV DSL description acts as a backbone software architecture based on which the other types of telephony application logics are placed and aligned to work together globally.
