A comparative assessment of bagging ensemble models for modeling concrete slump flow

  • In the last decade, several modeling approaches have been proposed and applied to estimate the high-performance concrete (HPC) slump flow. While HPC is a highly complex material, modeling its behavior is a very difficult issue. Thus, the selection and application of proper modeling methods remain therefore a crucial task. Like many other applications, HPC slump flow prediction suffers from noise which negatively affects the prediction accuracy and increases the variance. In the recent years, ensemble learning methods have introduced to optimize the prediction accuracy and reduce the prediction error. This study investigates the potential usage of bagging (Bag), which is among the most popular ensemble learning methods, in building ensemble models. Four well-known artificial intelligence models (i.e., classification and regression trees CART, support vector machines SVM, multilayer perceptron MLP and radial basis function neural networks RBF) are deployed as base learner. As a result of this study, bagging ensemble models (i.e., Bag-SVM, Bag-RT, Bag-MLP and Bag-RBF) are found superior to their base learners (i.e., SVM, CART, MLP and RBF) and bagging could noticeable optimize prediction accuracy and reduce the prediction error of proposed predictive models.

  • The present study intends to find a proper solution for the estimation of the physical behaviors of enlarged piles through a combination of small-scale laboratory tests and a hybrid computational predictive intelligence process. In the first step, experimental program is completed considering various critical influential factors. The results of the best multilayer perceptron (MLP)-based predictive network was implemented through three mathematical-based solutions of dragonfly algorithm (DA), whale optimization algorithm (WOA), and ant lion optimization (ALO). Three proposed models, after convergence analysis, suggested excellent performance. These analyses varied based on neurons number (e.g., in the basis MLP hidden layer) and of course, the level of its complexity. The training R2 results of the best hybrid structure of DA-MLP, WOA-MLP, and ALO-MLP were 0.996, 0.996, and 0.998 where the testing R2 was 0.995, 0.985, and 0.998, respectively. Similarly, the training RMSE of 0.046, 0.051, and 0.034 were obtained for the training and testing datasets of DA-MLP, WOA-MLP, and ALO-MLP techniques, while the testing RMSE of 0.088, 0.053, and 0.053, respectively. This obtained result demonstrates the excellent prediction from the optimized structure of the proposed models if only population sensitivity analysis performs. Indeed, the ALO-MLP was slightly better than WOA-MLP and DA-MLP methods.

Development of Multi-DoFs Prosthetic Forearm based on EMG Pattern Recognition and Classification (근전도 패턴 인식 및 분류 기반 다자유도 전완 의수 개발)

  • This paper presents a multiple DoFs (degrees-of-freedom) prosthetic forearm and sEMG (surface electromyogram) pattern recognition and motion intent classification of forearm amputee. The developed prosthetic forearm has 9 DoFs hand and single-DoF wrist, and the socket is designed considering wearability. In addition, the pattern recognition based on sEMG is proposed for prosthetic control. Several experiments were conducted to substantiate the performance of the prosthetic forearm. First, the developed prosthetic forearm could perform various motions required for activity of daily living of forearm amputee. It was able to control according to shape and size of the object. Additionally, the amputee was able to perform 'tying up shoe' using the prosthetic forearm. Secondly, pattern recognition and classification experiments using the sEMG signals were performed to find out whether it could classify the motions according to the user's intents. For this purpose, sEMG signals were applied to the multilayer perceptron (MLP) for training and testing. As a result, overall classification accuracy arrived at 99.6% for all participants, and all the postures showed more than 97% accuracy.

  • With the introduction of the tele-monitoring system (TMS) in South Korea, monitoring of the concentration of pollutants discharged from nationwide water quality TMS attachments is possible. In addition, the Ministry of Environment is implementing a smart sewage system program that combines ICT technology with wastewater treatment plants. Thus, many institutions are adopting the automatic operation technique which uses process operation factors and TMS data of sewage treatment plants. As a part of the preliminary study, a multilayer perceptron (MLP) analysis method was applied to TMS data to identify predictability degree. TMS data were designated as independent variables, and each pollutant was considered as an independent variables. To verify the validity of the prediction, root mean square error analysis was conducted. TMS data from two public sewage treatment plants in Chungnam were used. The values of RMSE in SS, T-N, and COD predictions (excluding T-P) in treatment plant A showed an error range of 10%, and in the case of treatment plant B, all items showed an error exceeding 20%. If the total amount of data used MLP analysis increases, the predictability of MLP analysis is expected to increase further.

Development of a neural network method for measuring the energy spectrum of a pulsed electron beam, based on Bremsstrahlung X-Ray

  • In the pulsed electron beam generators, such as plasma focus devices and linear induction accelerators whose electron pulse width is in the range of nanosecond and less, as well as in cases where there is no direct access to electron beam, like runaway electrons in Tokamaks, measurement of the electron energy spectrum is a technical challenge. In such cases, the indirect measurement of the electron spectrum by using the bremsstrahlung radiation spectrum associated with it, is an appropriate solution. The problem with this method is that the matrix equation between the two spectrums is an ill-conditioned equation, which results in errors of the measured X-ray spectrum to be propagated with a large coefficient in the estimated electron spectrum. In this study, a method based on the neural network and the MCNP code is presented and evaluated to recover the electron spectrum from the X-ray generated by collision of the electron beam with a target. Multilayer perceptron network showed good accuracy in electron spectrum recovery, so that for the X-ray spectrum with errors of 3% and 10%, the network estimated the electron spectrum with an average standard error of 8% and 11%, on all of the energy intervals.

  • Multilayer perceptrons(MLPs) or feed-forward neural networks are widely applied to many areas based on their function approximation capabilities. When implementing MLPs for application problems, we should determine various parameters and training methods. In this paper, we discuss the design of MLPs especially for pattern classification problems. This discussion includes how to decide the number of nodes in each layer, how to initialize the weights of MLPs, how to train MLPs among various error functions, the imbalanced data problems, and deep architecture.

  • Multilayer feedforward networks may be applied to identify the deterministic relationship between input and output data. When the results from the network require a high level of assurance, consideration of the stochastic relationship between the input and output data may be very important. Variance is one of the effective parameters to deal with the stochastic relationship. This paper presents a new algroithm for a multilayer feedforward network to learn the variance of dispersed data without preliminary calculation of variance. In this paper, the network with this learning algorithm is named as a variance learning neural network(VALEAN). Computer simulation examples are utilized for the demonstration and the evaluation of VALEAN.

  • The Car License Plate Recognition(: CLPR) is required in searching the hit-and-run car, measuring the traffic density, investigating the traffic accidents as well as in pursuing vehicle crimes according to the increasing in number of vehicles. The captured images on the real environment of the CLPR is contaminated not only by snow and rain, illumination changes, but also by the geometrical distortion due to the pose changes between camera and car at the moment of image capturing. We propose homographic transformation and intensity histogram of vertical image projection so as to transform the distorted input to the original image and cluster the character and number, respectively. Especially, in this paper, the Multilayer Perceptron Algorithm(: MLP) in the CLPR is used to not only recognize the charcters and car license plate, but also determine the optimized ratio among the number of input, hidden and output layers by the real experimental result.

  • In this paper, we analyse the noise robustness of MLPs(Multilayer perceptrons) through deriving the probability density function(p.d.f.) of output nodes with additive input noises and the misclassification ratio with the integral form of the p.d.f. functions. Also, we propose linear preprocessing methods to improve the noise robustness. As a preprocessing stage of MLPs, we consider ICA(independent component analysis) and PCA(principle component analysis). After analyzing the noise reduction effect using PCA or ICA in the viewpoints of SNR(Singal-to-Noise Ratio), we verify the preprocessing effects through the simulations of handwritten-digit recognition problems.

  • With many announcements on air pollution and human effects from particulate matters, particulate matter forecasts are attracting a lot of public attention. As a result, various efforts have been made to increase the accuracy of particulate matter forecasting by using statistical modeling and machine learning technique. In this paper, the particulate matter AQI index prediction is performed using the multilayer perceptron neural network for particulate matter prediction. For this purpose, a prediction model is designed by using the meteorological factors and particulate matter concentration values commonly used in a number of studies, and the accuracy of the particulate matter AQI prediction is compared.
