  • As WiBro service providers which provide a wireless multimedia communication service are selected, the commercial service will emerge in the near future. Although the use of efficient multicast technology for multimedia will be essentially required, it would be difficult to design the overall communication network in the early stage by using IP multicast due to technological or commercial issues. Application layer multicast schemes or hybrid multicast schemes also should be considered. In this paper, we propose a hybrid multicast scheme and evaluate its performance against typical IP multicast schemes on modelling of the WiBro network for one of WiBro service providers. We also propose a simulation method for the hybrid multicast on the simulation network for performance evaluation. If the number of mobile nodes reaches a certain point, the performance difference between the hybrid multicast and IP multicast is reduced significantly. We show that hybrid multicast technology can be applied for WiBro service without much performance degradation.

  • Group oriented multicast service is a prerequisite for the current application system for remote lecture and customer service. IP multicast is used to be generally accepted as an internet standard. IP multicast which is designed to support network based replication model can efficiently use host and network resource, however it has some weak points that it has to support IP multicast in the internet by adding multicast-capable internet infrastructure such as router and is vulnerable to security by using public IP address for group identifier. Therefore we propose the trigger based application level multicast model that can enhance both scalability and security by separating the functions, which send and receive message to solve these problems. Our suggested model is expected to ensure the promotion of quality of service and reliability.

  • In this paper, WiMedia Distributed-MAC protocol is adopted for development of an OSMU (One Source Multi Use) N-screen wireless multicast service. But, when considering wireless communication environment where channel error rate is time-variant, N-screen high-speed data is vulnerable to be lost. For this problem, a multicast relay scheme is proposed by analyzing Distributed-MAC protocol. In proposed multicast relay scheme, Multicast-free DRP Availability IE is combined and the relay node suitable for N-screen multicast transmissions is selected. Through this operation, it can avoid wireless channel with high errors and can transmit N-screen high-speed data. In simulation results, the proposed multicast relay scheme is compared with conventional Distributed-MAC multicast scheme in view points of throughput and energy consumption according to various numbers of multicast nodes and BER (Bit Error Rate) values in wireless channel. Through simulation results, it is explained that proposed multicast relay scheme should be adopted in WiMedia Distributed-MAC protocol to realize OSMU N-screen wireless multicast services.

  • As communication networks become very fast, the scope of applications is varied and applications using multi-party communications in which more than one communication station participate, have been increased. In this paper, multicast servers are designed and implemented by two different schemes (centralized multicast server scheme and distributed multicast server scheme). Both scheme contain three operation for joining/leaving of a node, operation for transmitting the name of the group and messages to the server, and operation for a node to read messages and clear shared memory. Based on their implementations, two multicast server schemes are compared in terms of complexity, extendibility, efficiency and real-time aspects. As a result, the average transfer time of the distributed multicast server scheme is shorter than that of the centralized multicast server scheme. Finally, we designed the multi-party real-time communication method to guarantee QoS in multicast.

  • In this letter, we study the multicast protection problem in sparse-splitting wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) optical network, and propose a novel multicast protection algorithm called the shared source-leaf path-based protection (SLPP) algorithm. Unlike the proposals in previous studies, the backup paths derived by SLPP can share wavelength with the primary tree in sparse-splitting WDM networks. Simulations are used to evaluate the effectiveness of the SLPP algorithm.

  • In this letter, a new sharing mechanism, SRLG sharing, is proposed, which allows the links of the same shared risk link group (SRLG) in a primary light tree to share protections in WDM optical networks. In previous studies, how to share spare resources with SRLG constraints has not been studied in multicast optical networks. In this letter, considering SRLG sharing, we propose a novel algorithm -multicast with SRLG sharing (MSS)- to establish a protection light tree. Finally, the algorithm MSS and the algorithm multicast with no SRLG sharing (MNSS) are compared through a simulation to show that our new sharing scheme of SRLG sharing is more efficient than that of no SRLG sharing in terms of spare resource utilization and blocking probability.

  • Vehicle communication networks have some deficient network resources to support a vast multimedia service including safety driving information, video, news and some broadcast relayed from the playgrounds such as professional baseball games for autonomous vehicles. This paper deals with the framework for providing seamless multimedia service including safety driving information using multicast in cooperated-connected vehicle communication network (CVCN). It adopts smart-switch (SS) and smart intelligent multicast agent(SIMA) to support the seamless multimedia service. The SS manages and switches multimedia streams through SIMA in CVCN network. The SIMA to operate as an access point, is composed of multicast supporting part and control part of mobile devices/autonomous vehicles in CVCN network. Therefore this proposed technique using SS and SIMA within CVCN network is a new framework for multimedia service that can disperse the load of server.

  • When the legacy multicast routing protocols are adopted in If-based mobile core networks, there are some problems such as traffic injection from unnecessary sources, traffic overhead by group management and router performance degradation by large amount of multicast session information. In this paper, we propose a stateless multicast mechanism which has no need to maintain multicast information for session status and reduces redundant network overhead for maintaining multicast tree. In addition interworking with IGMPv3 gets rid of traffic from unnecessary sources which have no registration from receivers. The operations of essential components including a gateway node for interworking with the legacy Internet multicast network, a gateway node for transparency to radio access network and a intermediate node in mobile core networks, are definitely defined and the proposed communication architecture is completed. Finally we evaluate and approve the performance of the proposed architecture by means of well-designed network simulation.

  • Multicast-based data communication is an efficient communication scheme in wireless networks where the Media Access Control (MAC) layer is based on one-hop broadcast from one source to multiple receivers. Compared with unicast, multicast over wireless channel should handle varying channel conditions of multiple users and user mobility to achieve good quality for all users. However, IEEE 802.11 does not support reliable multicast due to its inability to exchange RTS/CTS and ACK with multiple recipients. Thus, several MAC layer protocols have been proposed to provide reliable multicast. For the reliable multicast, an additional overhead is introduced and it degrades the system performance. In this paper, we propose a cross-layer design to reduce the control overhead for reliable multicast in OFDMA systems. We present an analytical formulation of the system throughput associated with the overhead.
