The Timoshenko beam model has been known as the most accurate model for representing beam structures. However, the Timoshenko beam model may give rise to a significant error when it is applied to multi-stepped beam structures. This paper is intended to demonstrate the modeling error of Timoshenko beam based finite element model for multi-stepped beam structures and to suggest a new modeling method to improve the accuracy. A tentative bending spring is introduced into the stepped section to represent the softening effect due to the presence of step. This paper also proposes a finite element modeling method in the light with the tentative bending spring model for the step softening effect. The proposed method rigorously adapts computation results from a commercial finite element code. The validity of the proposed method is demonstrated through a series of simulation and experiment.

The Timoshenko beam model has been acknowledged as the most accurate model for representing beam structures. However, the Timoshenko beam model may give rise to significant error when it is applied to multi-stepped beam structures. This paper is intended to demonstrate and improve the modeling error of Timoshenko beam theory for multi-stepped team structures. A tentative bending spring is introduced to represent the stiffness change around a step in beams. This paper proposes a finite element modeling method in the light with the bending spring. The proposed method is rigorously compared with commercial finite element codes. The validity of the proposed method is also demonstrated through an experiment..
The cross sections of multi-span beams are sometimes suddenly increased at the interior support of continuous beams to resist high negative moment. An earlier study on elastic lateral torsional buckling of stepped beams was conducted to propose new design equations. This research aims to continue the earlier study by considering the effect of inelastic buckling of stepped beams subjected to pure bending and general loading condition. A three-dimensional finite element-program ABAQUS and a statistical program MINITAB were used in the development of new design equations. The inelastic lateral torsional buckling strengths of 36 and 27 models for singly and doubly stepped beams, respectively, were investigated. The general loading condition consists of 15 loading cases based on the number of inflection point within the unbraced length of the stepped beams. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection were also considered to evaluate the inelastic buckling strengths. The proposed equations in this study will definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of stepped beams and will increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

The natural frequency of a beam plays a critical role in the dynamic analysis of beams. Especially it is a complicated and difficult task to analyse the natural frequency of a stepped beam with an irregularly varying section. The lumped mass methods, multi-degree of freedom analyses, are mainly used for the analysis of this kind of stepped beams. The accuracy of these methods are determined by the number of the partitions of elements, the number of the iterations in calculation, and the accuracy of assumed mode shapes. This study presents a method of transformation from symmetrically stepped beams to an equivalent beam and a method of the eigenvalue analysis. Appropriateness and utility of this method are demonstrated by comparing examples from other literatures and various models.
In this study, the nonlinear vibrations of stepped beams having different boundary conditions were investigated. The equations of motions were obtained by using Hamilton's principle and made non dimensional. The stretching effect induced non-linear terms to the equations. Natural frequencies are calculated for different boundary conditions, stepped ratios and stepped locations by Newton-Raphson Method. The corresponding nonlinear correction coefficients are also calculated for the fundamental mode. At the second part, an alternative method is produced for the analysis. The calculated natural frequencies and nonlinear corrections are used for training an artificial neural network (ANN) program which has a multi-layer, feed-forward, back-propagation algorithm. The results of the algorithm produce errors less than 2.5% for linear case and 10.12% for nonlinear case. The errors are much lower for most cases except clamped-clamped end condition. By employing the ANN algorithm, the natural frequencies and nonlinear corrections are easily calculated by little errors, and the computational time is drastically reduced compared with the conventional numerical techniques.

The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams are sometimes suddenly increased or stepped at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of monosymmetric stepped I-beams subjected to pure bending. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS and a regression program were used to analytically develop new design equation. The flange thickness ratio, flange width ratio and stepped length ratio were considered as parameters of this study. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometric imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The proposed solution can be easily used to calculation for inelastic lateral torsional buckling strengths of monosymmetric beams with doubly stepped cross sections and to develop new design equations for inelastic lateral-torsional buckling resistances of stepped beams.

The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams sometimes suddenly increase, or become stepped, at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. The three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2006) was used to analytically investigate the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of stepped beams subjected to pure bending moment and resulted in the development of design equations. The flanges of the smaller cross-section were fixed at 30.48 by 2.54 cm, whereas the width and/or thickness of the flanges of the larger cross-section varied. The web thickness and height of beam was kept at 1.65 cm and 88.9 cm, respectively. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beams are considered analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 35 cases, respectively, were analyzed for double and single stepped beams. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. First, the distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi, etc (1995), and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The new proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic LTB problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design. The proposed solutions can be easily used to develop new design equation for inelastic LTB resistance of stepped beams subjected to general loading condition such as a concentrated load, a series of concentrated loads or uniformly distributed load.

The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams sometimes suddenly increase, or become stepped, at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. The three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) was used to analytically investigate the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of stepped beams subjected to linear moment gradient and resulted in the development of design equations. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered for the analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. First, the distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995), and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The new proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

Nonlinearity plays an important role in control systems and the application of design. For this reason, in addition to linear vibrations, nonlinear vibrations of the stepped nanobeam are also discussed in this manuscript. This study investigated the vibrations of stepped nanobeams according to Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory was used to capture the nanoscale effect. The nanoscale stepped Euler Bernoulli beam is considered. The equations of motion representing the motion of the beam are found by Hamilton's principle. The equations were subjected to nondimensionalization to make them independent of the dimensions and physical structure of the material. The equations of motion were found using the multi-time scale method, which is one of the approximate solution methods, perturbation methods. The first section of the series obtained from the perturbation solution represents a linear problem. The linear problem's natural frequencies are found for the simple-simple boundary condition. The second-order part of the perturbation solution is the nonlinear terms and is used as corrections to the linear problem. The system's amplitude and phase modulation equations are found in the results part of the problem. Nonlinear frequency-amplitude, and external frequency-amplitude relationships are discussed. The location of the step, the radius ratios of the steps, and the changes of the small-scale parameter of the theory were investigated and their effects on nonlinear vibrations under simple-simple boundary conditions were observed by making comparisons. The results are presented via tables and graphs. The current beam model can assist in designing and fabricating integrated such as nano-sensors and nano-actuators.

The mathematical modeling on the free vibration and stability of a multi-stepped shaft of turbo compressor is performed in this study. The multi-stepped shaft is modeled as a non-uniform Timoshenko beam supported by anisotropic bearings. It is assumed that the shaft is spinning with constant speed about its longitudinal axis and subjected to a conservative axial force induced by front and rear impellers attached to the shaft. The structural model incorporates non-classical features such as transverse shear and rotary inertia. A structural coupling between vertical and lateral motions is induced by Coriolis acceleration terms. The governing equations are derived via Hamilton's variational principle and the equations are transformed to the standard form of an eigenvalue problem. The implications of combined gyroscopic effect, conservative axial force, bearing stiffness and damping are revealed and a number of pertinent conclusions are outlined. In this study analytical results are compared with those from ANSYS finite element analysis and experimental modal testing.
