Turbidity, the measure of the cloudiness of water, is used as an important index for water quality management. The turbidity can vary greatly in small river systems, which affects water quality in national rivers. Therefore, the generation of high-resolution spatial information on turbidity is very important. In this study, a turbidity retrieval model using the Korea Multi-Purpose Satellite-3 and -3A (KOMPSAT-3/3A) images was developed for high-resolution turbidity mapping of Han River system based on eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) algorithm. To this end, the top of atmosphere (TOA) spectral reflectance was calculated from a total of 24 KOMPSAT-3/3A images and 150 Landsat-8 images. The Landsat-8 TOA spectral reflectance was cross-calibrated to the KOMPSAT-3/3A bands. The turbidity measured by the National Water Quality Monitoring Network was used as a reference dataset, and as input variables, the TOA spectral reflectance at the locations of in situ turbidity measurement, the spectral indices (the normalized difference vegetation index, normalized difference water index, and normalized difference turbidity index), and the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS)-derived atmospheric products(the atmospheric optical thickness, water vapor, and ozone) were used. Furthermore, by analyzing the KOMPSAT-3/3A TOA spectral reflectance of different turbidities, a new spectral index, new normalized difference turbidity index (nNDTI), was proposed, and it was added as an input variable to the turbidity retrieval model. The XGBoost model showed excellent performance for the retrieval of turbidity with a root mean square error (RMSE) of 2.70 NTU and a normalized RMSE (NRMSE) of 14.70% compared to in situ turbidity, in which the nNDTI proposed in this study was used as the most important variable. The developed turbidity retrieval model was applied to the KOMPSAT-3/3A images to map high-resolution river turbidity, and it was possible to analyze the spatiotemporal variations of turbidity. Through this study, we could confirm that the KOMPSAT-3/3A images are very useful for retrieving high-resolution and accurate spatial information on the river turbidity.
This study evaluated the applicability of multi-resolution data fusion for land-cover classification. In the applicability evaluation, a spatial time-series geostatistical deconvolution/fusion model (STGDFM) was applied as a multi-resolution data fusion model. The study area was selected as some agricultural lands in Iowa State, United States. As input data for multi-resolution data fusion, Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Landsat satellite images were used considering the landscape of study area. Based on this, synthetic Landsat images were generated at the missing date of Landsat images by applying STGDFM. Then, land-cover classification was performed using both the acquired Landsat images and the STGDFM fusion results as input data. In particular, to evaluate the applicability of multi-resolution data fusion, two classification results using only Landsat images and using both Landsat images and fusion results were compared and evaluated. As a result, in the classification result using only Landsat images, the mixed patterns were prominent in the corn and soybean cultivation areas, which are the main land-cover type in study area. In addition, the mixed patterns between land-cover types of vegetation such as hay and grain areas and grass areas were presented to be large. On the other hand, in the classification result using both Landsat images and fusion results, these mixed patterns between land-cover types of vegetation as well as corn and soybean were greatly alleviated. Due to this, the classification accuracy was improved by about 20%p in the classification result using both Landsat images and fusion results. It was considered that the missing of the Landsat images could be compensated for by reflecting the time-series spectral information of the MODIS images in the fusion results through STGDFM. This study confirmed that multi-resolution data fusion can be effectively applied to land-cover classification.

In this study, the dust/smoke detection algorithm was developed with a multi-spectral satellite remote sensing method using Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) Level 1B (L1B) data and the results were validated as RGB composite images of red(R; band 1), green(G; band 4), blue(B; band 3) channels using MODIS L1B data and Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization Satellite Observations(CALIPSO) Vertical Feature Mask (VFM) product. In the daytime on March 30, 2007 and April 27, 2012, the consistencies between the dust/smoke detected by this algorithm and verification data were approximately 56.4 %, 72.0 %, respectively. During the nighttime, the similar consistency was 40.5 % on April 27, 2012. Although these results were analyzed for limited cases due to the spatiotemporal matching for the MODIS and CALIPSO satellites, they could be used to utilize the aerosol detection of geostationary satellites for the next generations in Korea through further research.
Purpose : High-resolution spiral-scan imaging is performed at 3 Tesla MRI system. Since the gradient waveforms for the spiral-scan imaging have lower slopes than those for the Echo Planar Imaging (EPI), they can be implemented with the gradient systems having lower slew rates. The spiral-scan imaging also involves less eddy currents due to the smooth gradient waveforms. The spiral-scan imaging method does not suffer from high specific absorption rate (SAR), which is one of the main obstacles in high field imaging for rf echo-based fast imaging methods such as fast spin echo techniques. Thus, the spiral-scan imaging has a great potential for the high-speed imaging in high magnetic fields. In this paper, we presented various high-resolution images obtained by the spiral-scan methods at 3T MRI system for various applications. Materials and Methods : High-resolution spiral-scan imaging technique is implemented at 3T whole body MRI system. An efficient and fast higher-order shimming technique is developed to reduce the inhomogeneity, and the single-shot and interleaved spiral-scan imaging methods are developed. Spin-echo and gradient-echo based spiral-scan imaging methods are implemented, and image contrast and signal-tonoise ratio are controlled by the echo time, repetition time, and the rf flip angles. Results : Spiral-scan images having various resolutions are obtained at 3T MRI system. Since the absolute magnitude of the inhomogeneity is increasing in higher magnetic fields, higher order shimming to reduce the inhomogeneity becomes more important. A fast shimming technique in which axial, sagittal, and coronal sectional inhomogeneity maps are obtained in one scan is developed, and the shimming method based on the analysis of spherical harmonics of the inhomogeneity map is applied. For phantom and invivo head imaging, image matrix size of about $100{\times}100$ is obtained by a single-shot spiral-scan imaging, and a matrix size of $256{\times}256$ is obtained by the interleaved spiral-scan imaging with the number of interleaves of from 6 to 12. Conclusion : High field imaging becomes increasingly important due to the improved signal-to-noise ratio, larger spectral separation, and the higher BOLD-based contrast. The increasing SAR is, however, a limiting factor in high field imaging. Since the spiral-scan imaging has a very low SAR, and lower hardware requirements for the implementation of the technique compared to EPI, it is suitable for a rapid imaging in high fields. In this paper, the spiral-scan imaging with various resolutions from $100{\times}100$ to $256{\times}256$ by controlling the number of interleaves are developed for the high-speed imaging in high magnetic fields.
In this study, the concept and techniques to generate the level lA, lB and 2A image products have been reviewed. In particular, radiometric and geometric corrections and bands registration used to generate level lA, lB and 2A products have been focused in this study. Radiometric correction is performed to take into account radiometric gain and offset calculated by compensating the detector response non-uniformity. And, in order to compensate satellite altitude, attitude, skew effects, earth rotation and earth curvature, some geometric parameters for geometric corrections are computed and applied. Bands registration process using the matching function between a geometry, which is called 'reference geometry', and another one which is corresponds to the image to be registered is applied to images in case of multi-spectral imaging mode. In order to generate level-lA image products, a simple radiometric processing is applied to a level-0 image. Level-lB image has the same radiometry correction as a level-lA image, but is also issued from some geometric corrections in order to compensate skew effects, Earth rotation effects and spectral misregistration. Level-2A image is generated using some geo-referencing parameters computed by ephemeris data, orbit attitudes and sensor angles. Level lA image is tested by visual analysis. The difference between distances calculated level 1 B image and distances of real coordinate is tested. Level 2A image is tested Using checking points.
Hydrated asteroids get widespread attention for the evolution of water in the Solar System, especially thanks to the recent successes of the Hayabusa2 and OSIRIS-REx space missions. The target asteroids of these missions are believed to be fragments that have experienced aqueous alteration in their parent bodies [3]. Although hydrated asteroids have been studied well via spectroscopy, focusing on the 0.7 um or the 2.7 um absorption bands [2, 3, 4], polarimetric properties of these asteroids have rarely been investigated. In this study, we conducted a polarimetric observation of 18 C-complex main-belt asteroids with the 1.6-m Pirka telescope at the Nayoro Observatory of Hokkaido University, Japan. We used a polarimetric imaging mode of the Multi-Spectral Imager (MSI) with the standard Rc-band filter (the central wavelength at 0.64 um) [5]. As a result, we found that all of these hydrated asteroids indicate deep negative branches of their polarimetric profiles. Accordingly, the hydrated asteroids have the polarization minima (Pmin), whose values are significantly lower than any other taxonomic types of asteroids (including C-group asteroids). Because Pmin depends on albedo, particle size, and porosity of the surface materials [1], we suspect that hydrated asteroids are distinctive from other asteroids in terms of these physical properties. In this presentation, we introduce our polarimetric observation and findings. We discuss why hydrated asteroids indicate such low Pmin values, comparing Pmin with spectral features at 0.7 um and 2.7 um based on the observation results.
Conventional analysis of spectral induced polarization (SIP) data consists of measuring impedances over a range of frequencies, followed by spectral analysis to estimate spectral parameters. For the quantitative and accurate estimation of subsurface SIP parameter distribution, however, a sophisticated and stable inversion technique is required. In this study, we have developed a two-step inversion approach to obtain the two-dimensional distribution of SIP parameters. In the first inversion step, all the SIP data measured over a range of frequencies are simultaneously inverted, adopting cross regularisation of model complex resistivities at each frequency. The cross regularisation makes it possible to enhance the noise characteristics of the inversion by imposing a strong assumption, that complex resistivities should show similar characteristics over a range of frequencies. In numerical experiments, we could verify that our inversion approach successfully reduced inversion artefacts. As a second step, we have also developed an inversion algorithm to obtain SIP parameters based on the Cole-Cole model, in which frequency-dependent complex resistivities from the first step are inverted to obtain a two-dimensional distribution of SIP parameters. In numerical tests, the SIP parameter images showed a fairly good match with the exact model, which suggests that SIP imaging can provide a very useful subsurface image to complement resistivity.
The Multi-Spectral Camera (MSC) is the payload of KOMPSAT-2 which is designed for earth imaging in optical and near-infrared region on a sun-synchronous orbit. The telescope in the MSC is a Ritchey-Chretien type with large aperture. The telescope structure should be well stabilized and the optical alignment should be kept steady so that best images can be achieved. However, the MSC is exposed to adverse thermal environment on the orbit which can give impacts on optical performance. Solar incidence can bring non-uniform temperature rise on the telescope tube which entails unfavorable thermal distortion. Three ways of preventing the solar radiation were proposed, which were installing external mechanical shield, internal shield, and maneuvering the spacecraft. After trade-off study, internal sun shield was selected as a practical and optimal solution to minimize the effect of the solar radiation. In addition, detailed designs of the structure and sunshield were produced and analyses have been performed. The results were assessed to verify their impacts to the image quality. It was confirmed that the internal sunshield complies with the requirements and would improve image quality.

Output data streams of the MSC contain flags, Headers and image data according to the established protocols and data formats. Especially the Header added to each data lines contain information of a line sync, a line counter and, ancillary data which consist of ancillary identification bit and one ancillary data byte. This information is used by ground station to calculate the geographic coordinates of the image and get the on-board time and several EOS(Electro-Optical Subsystem) parameters used at the time of imaging. Therefore, the EGSE(Electrical Ground Supporting Equipment) that is used for testing MSC has to have functions of interpreting and displaying this Header information correctly following the protocols. This paper describes the design of the header data processing module which is in EOSEGSE. This module provides users with various test functions such as header validation, ancillary block validation, line-counter and In-line counter validation checks which allow convenient and fast test on imagery data.
