  • Recently, there has been research to use portable digital camera to recognize objects in natural scene images, including labels or marks on a cylindrical surface. In many cases, text or logo in a label can be distorted by a structural movement of the object on which the label resides. Since the distortion in the label can degrade the performance of object recognition, the label should be rectified or restored from deformations. In this paper, a new method for label detection and restoration in digital images is presented. In the detection phase, the Hough transform is employed to detect two vertical boundaries of the label, and a horizontal edge profile is analyzed to detect upper-side and lower-side boundaries of the label. Then, the biquadratic transformation is used to restore the rectangular shape of the label. The proposed algorithm performs restoration of 3D objects in a 2D space, and it requires neither an auxiliary hardware such as 3D camera to construct 3D models nor a multi-camera to capture objects in different views. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • Most of the research in the multi-touch area is based on the FTIR(Frustrated Total Internal Re리ection), which is just implemented by using the previous approach. Moreover, there are not the software solutions to improve a performance in the multi touch-blobs detection or the user gesture recognition. Therefore, we implement a multi-touch table-top display that is based on the DI(Diffused Illumination), the improved touch-points detection and user gesture recognition. The proposed method supports a simultaneous transformation multi-touch command for objects in the running application. Also, the system latency time is reduced by the proposed ore-testing method in the multi touch-blobs detection processing. Implemented device is simulated by programming the Flash AS3 application in the TUIO(Tangible User Interface Object) environment that is based on the OSC(Open Sound Control) protocol. As a result, Our system shows the 37% system latency reduction, and is successful in the multi-touch gestures recognition.

  • Recently, augmented reality technology has received much attention in many fields. This paper presents an augmented reality system using Rubiks' Cube which can augment various 3D objects depending on patterns of a Rubiks' cube. The system first detects a cube from an image using partitional clustering and strongly connected graph. Thereafter, the system detects the top side of the cube and finds a proper pattern to determine which object should be augmented. An object corresponding to the pattern is finally augmented according to the camera viewpoint. Experimental results show that the proposed system successfully augments various virtual objects in real time.

  • A multi-scale database is a set of spatial database, covering same geographic area with different scales and it can be derived from pre-existing databases. In the derivation processes of a new multi-scale spatial database, the geometries and topological relations on the source database can be transformed and the transformation can be the cause of the lack of integrity Therefore, it is necessary to assess the transformation whether it is consistent or not after the derivation process of a new multi-scale database. Thus, we propose assessment methods for the topological consistency between a source database and a derived multi-scale database in this paper. In particular, we focus on the case that 2-dimensional objects are collapsed to 1-dimensional ones in the derivation process of a multi-scale database. We also describe implementation of the assessment methods and show the results of the implementation with experimental data.

  • Imaging through multicore fiber (MCF) is of great significance in the biomedical domain. Although several techniques have been developed to image an object from a signal passing through MCF, these methods are strongly dependent on the surroundings, such as vibration and the temperature fluctuation of the fiber's environment. In this paper, we apply a new, strong technique called deep learning to reconstruct the phase image through a MCF in which each core is multimode. To evaluate the network, we employ the binary cross-entropy as the loss function of a convolutional neural network (CNN) with improved U-net structure. The high-quality reconstruction of input objects upon spatial light modulation (SLM) can be realized from the speckle patterns of intensity that contain the information about the objects. Moreover, we study the effect of MCF length on image recovery. It is shown that the shorter the fiber, the better the imaging quality. Based on our findings, MCF may have applications in fields such as endoscopic imaging and optical communication.

  • Range query is one of the most important operations for spatial objects, it retrieves all spatial objects that overlap a given query region in multi-dimensional space. The DOT(DOuble Transformation) is known as an efficient indexing methods, it transforms the MBR of a spatial object into a single numeric value using a space filling curve, and stores the value in a $B^+$-tree. The DOT index is possible to be employed as a primary index for spatial objects. However, the range query processing based on the DOT index requires much overhead for spatial transformations to get the query region in the final space. Also, the detailed range query processing method for 2-dimensional spatial objects has not been studied yet in this paper, we propose an efficient multi-dimensional range query processing technique based on the DOT index. The proposed technique exploits the regularities in the moving patterns of space filling curves to divide a query region into a set of maximal sub-legions within which space filling curves traverse without interruption. Such division reduces the number of spatial transformations required to perform the range query and thus improves the performance of range query processing. A visual simulator is developed to show the evaluation method and the performance of our technique.

  • To retrieve complex data such as images, the content-based retrieval method rather than keyword based method is required. In this paper, we implemented a content-based image retrieval system which retrieves object of user query effectively using invariant moments which have invariant properties about linear transformation like position transition, rotation and scaling. To extract the shape feature of objects in an image, we propose a labeling algorithm that extracts objects from an image and apply invariant moments to each object. Hashing method is also applied to reduce a retrieval time and index images effectively. The experimental results demonstrate the high retrieval efficiency i.e precision 85%, recall 23%. Consequently, our retrieval system shows better performance than the conventional system that cannot express the shale of objects exactly.

  • A intelligent mobile hexapod robot with various types of sensors and wireless camera is introduced. We show this mobile robot can detect objects well by combining the results of active sensors and image processing algorithm. First, to detect objects, active sensors such as infrared rays sensors and supersonic waves sensors are employed together and calculates the distance in real time between the object and the robot using sensor's output. The difference between the measured value and calculated value is less than 5%. This paper suggests effective visual detecting system for moving objects with specified color and motion information. The proposed method includes the object extraction and definition process which uses color transformation and AWUPC computation to decide the existence of moving object. We add weighing values to each results from sensors and the camera. Final results are combined to only one value which represents the probability of an object in the limited distance. Sensor fusion technique improves the detection rate at least 7% higher than the technique using individual sensor.

  • In this paper, we propose a compression method for multi-resolution feature maps for VCM. The proposed compression method removes the redundancy between the channels and resolution levels of the multi-resolution feature map through PCA-based transformation. According to each characteristic, the basis vectors and mean vector used for transformation, and the transformation coefficient obtained through the transformation are compressed using a VVC-based coder and DeepCABAC. In order to evaluate performance of the proposed method, the object detection performance was measured for the OpenImageV6 and COCO 2017 validation set, and the BD-rate of MPEG-VCM anchor and feature map compression anchor proposed in this paper was compared using bpp and mAP. As a result of the experiment, the proposed method shows a 25.71% BD-rate performance improvement compared to feature map compression anchor in OpenImageV6. Furthermore, for large objects of the COCO 2017 validation set, the BD-rate performance is improved by up to 43.72% compared to the MPEG-VCM anchor.

  • With the development of recent technology such as telematics, LBS, and ubiquitous, the applications of 3D GIS are rapidly increased. As 3D GIS is mainly based on urban models consisting of the realistic digital models of the objects existing in an urban area, demands for urban models and its continuous update is expected to be drastically increased. The purpose of this study is thus to propose more efficient and precise methods to construct urban models with its experimental verification. Applying the proposed methods, the terrain and sophisticated building models are constructed for the area of $270,600m^2$ with 23 buildings in the University of Seoul. For the terrain models, airborne imagery and LIDAR data is used, while the ground imagery is mainly used for the building models. It is found that the generated models reflect the correct geometry of the buildings and terrain surface. The textures of building surfaces, generated automatically using the projective transformation however, are not well-constructed because of being blotted out and shaded by objects such as trees, near buildings, and other obstacles. Consequently, the algorithms on the texture extraction should be improved to construct more realistic 3D models. Furthermore, the inside of buildings should be modeled for various potential applications in the future.
